Picked up Superiority this week, wow what  a great book.

Here's my quick thoughts:

  •  More unit Attachments: These are WAY cool and give ya something like 40k squad customization.
  •  Having all the Merc stuff at your finger tips, plus cool new contracts, and Madhammer is just too neato not to want and try out.
  •  Cavalry rules, simple & effective.  I like that some can dismount!  And I can't wait to see the Khador Dragoon model, it must be HUGE
  • The detailed faction background. Each faction is now EASILY as fleshed out as ANY 40k army codex.  Army chain of command, org charts, battle honors, all kinds of cool fluff.
  • Artwork and imagery is exceptional as usual.
  • Page 5...best ever.

In short... Two thumbs up.

Awesome, awesome and even more awesome.

The cav, I'm still holding opinion on until I try them out, but everything else is sweet.

Must agree, I picked up my copy on Friday and read about the new Cygnar stuff and then the new stuff some of the other factions are getting.

Found it interesting that the Cygnar Rangers did not even have a picture of the models.  The rest of the stuff looks cool and I can not wait for some of the items.

Warrior: That's pretty typical. Check out Primal. A lot of the
stuff there hasn't been modeled yet. They only tend to show
figs that are ready for production and painted by their teams.
I can't recall a metal fig being showed outside of a hobby
article.

Expect a year's worth of releases with plenty of time to keep you
going back to the shop.

The best part about the book, they make units previously much maligned (such as Paladins and Winterguard) much more attractive. Cornerstone + Shieldbreaker is absolutely awesome! Vilmon's ability to advance and only be open to damage from Feats and Spells (+ immunity to continuous effects) makes him very cool for 38ps.

The Winterguard UA and Grenadier who doesn't actually die (much like a standard, nearby models pick up the grenades) also make them a bit more worth using. The new Winterguard solo helps make them less 'Blah' as well.

I'm a happy kid because Menoth and Khador are my two primary factions. They got cool new Cav and some patchwork that I really liked. A LOT more in this book than Apotheosis as the focus seems to be on the FORCES instead on the CASTERS.

Worth getting the hardcover. Ogrun Monkey Pirates and the new Revenant Captain are awesome. Pirates of the Necronomicon 2!.

I think the book is fantastic overall but am worried that the faction lines are starting to blur even further....

Loving the new units.

Is it just me, or is the Covenant of Menoth the winner of the most un-usable unit?

1.  Even though he has 5 wounds and only takes 1 wound from damage exceeding his ARM, he seems overly easy to kill.

2.  Even though he counts as a small based model, that huge base makes him hard to screen.

3.  He's got to be in the thick of things to keep his 8" radius useful.

So - would I be correct in assessing that he's only good as a fire magnet?  Passage 3 is stupidly expensive to fulfill.  He's maybe got some synergy with Severius, since Severius can afford to forgo his activation while standing way back just upkeeping EOM and pumping warjacks with focus.

OTOH, most of the other units seem pretty cool.  Lots of potential.  E-Magus is an absolute beast.  Absolutely awesome.

I feel that Cryx probably got the least out of Superiority.  Their cavalry, while having Reach all the time is nice, regeneration is over-rated, as anyone who runs a Senechal or plays Hordes will tell you, a canny opponent will make sure it dies all the way.  My in-game opinion of the Harrower is - take a Slayer or Seether + biles instead.  As for the unit attachments, they seem iffy as well, though Rengrave seems to be the most playable (Keep the QM out of sight and Rengrave is near invincible).  I'm uncertain if the Sea Witch make the Satyxis playable.  The Brute Thrall - might - make the poor Necrosurgeon playable, since she can be screened by it.  I'm not even sure about that burrowing jack.  It seems good on the surface, but it has to give up its activation to burrow, which makes it slow, if you want to use its burrow attack.

Only time will tell.

BTW.  The end story about Irusk's failure to take that Cygnar town was fantastic.  I bet we get Epic Irusk in the next expansion.  One of the best parts about Warmachine is the evolving narrative.

Yeah, I'll likely buy the covenant but I haven't seen HOW I can put him to work for me.

I think the Brute Thrall + Scourge will be monster. Being able to CMA with McThralls is pretty cool. The Captain solo is beefy as well.

I agree about the rest of the Cryx stuff however. More Helljacks is not exactly what they need, as the helljacks themselves are all eclipsed by the DJ and aren't supremely interacitve with the rest of the list.

Epic Skarre being able to trick the deathjack into thinking she gave it focus is pretty cool though. Beauty has tamed the beast!

The covenant is very much a "screw sorscha" unit. Superiority gave one to every non-Cryx faction (Cryx already has Goreshade). They don't like to admit that Sorscha is broke in Steamroller; but the results from GenCon nationals 3 years running + Superiority to me seems to be a tacit acknwoledgement.

Look at it this way - for 15-20 points (can't remember the exact cost) the Covenant makes your warcaster immune to Sorscha's feat. The rest is just gravy.

The Covenant's final ability is awesome, but it's going to be hard to trigger it in time for it to make a difference in Steamroller. Earliest you can trigger it is turn 3 (and that's with some creative use of the Castigator's two handed throw, most likely).

Agreed... he'll be a good sidebar in a Steamroller tourney if you face sorcha.

The banbelord for Cryx is pretty awesome. I've had great fun using baneknights & some woods to frustrate my opponents (yo-yo trick ala spiritdoor lol)

That was my first thought as well, but the Covenant is on a large base, making him very hard to screen.  Khador has lots of arcing fire which will soften him up and if he is ever exposed, widowmakers will make swiss cheese out of him, meaning that you need to throw a bunch of stuff in front of him so that he doesnt' die - and the cost of babysitters increases his cost significantly.

I also believe that Eyriss can plop 3 damage on him with a death bolt since it is an attack that doesn't exceed ARM.  It just happens.

The covenant is treated as if he's on a small base, so you can block LOS to him.

I actually think there's a use to everything in there. The covenant, as stated, is excellent at boning sorscha.

I'm most excited to see how cav changes the game. I'd included 8 exemplar errants just for the advanced deployment, but with cav (which are about the same cost), I no longer even need advanced deployment to compete in the pendulum mission. And in my high reclaimer list, they even come back from the dead.

The only thing I don't like is the prospect of spending $100 on 5 cav models. That's going to make baby jesus cry.

Yeah, but they are beautiful.  These aren't guys on a bunch of stamped out weedy plastic horses.  Each of the 3 horses in a is an individual sculpt and huge.  The inside back page of this month's NQ has a good photo that shows Menoth models cav fighting infantry.  You can finally get a feel for the size.

Also, the painting cav article in NQ#9 also gives you a great, up close look at the detail of these babies.

I might go so far as to say these are the best cavalry models ever produced by a miniature gaming company.

$100 on 5 cav models...

Kinda like buying a unit of 5 GW Trolls, or 5 Ogre Maneaters. ($18USD ea)  Haha.  Except the warmachine cav are usable with many lists, offer synergy, don't have a points restriction, and aren't as ugly looking.

The covenent's base counts as small; so if you have multiple small based models in front of it you can block LOS. Of course Mortars can still hit him.

Probably Eiryss will become the premiere Covenant hunter; Death Bolt will still do 3 pts of damage to it.

It's funny though. As the game gets bigger and bigger, suddenly items that were thought of
as auto-includes will not seem that way anymore. See: Eiryss.

The Covenent is pretty awesome. Just making your caster immune to Knockdown is awesome, if that caster's defence is it's primary means of survival. I can't tell you the amount of times having my caster get knocked down by a throw or slam has caused me to lose or to win when the situation is reversed. His other passages are interesting, but I think he's a amazing bodygurad model for a caster. You can even use his large base to block enemy charges and be confident that he's going to survive (unless he's got more then five attacks coming his way).

"Screw Sorscha"? Only in concept. The problem is Eiryss + a few Widowmakers = dead Covenant. Templates also make for much fun (shoot the screen, catch the big base for a point). Then freeze away. Even better, the Menite forces will be clustered around the Covenant if they want any benefit, meaning bombards, mortars, tempest, etc. are that much more effective. And none of this helps Menoth get any faster... Wheee! The Covenant is a classic example of game balance breakdown. Silver bullets are *not* a good thing. And I despise that I have to include a certain model (that will be pretty much dead weight against any other lists) in my tournament list in order to have a shot at being competitive, regardless of my tactical ability. At least the Covenant looks to have a cool model....

I do like the TFG attachment, though. It is generally useful, has a nice anti-Sorscha ability, and looks good.

@jmurph: I think your over thinking it. The covenant is a great tool for a Menoth player, it stops knockdown as well as "frozen" fun. It's a robust model that genereates some very useful effects, but it's cost is only 20 points. Sure Eiryss and some widowmakers can own it, but the Khador player is making great plays or the menoth player is sucking if that's happening. I think the biggest influence is that in steam rollers, a Khador player might not pick a Sorcha list if he's playing a menoth player who has the covenant in on of his lists. Most of the times I go to steamrollers, I have one list I want to play, and the other list is a Bluff(but I'll bring all the models in case I feel it's 100% the right choice to make). The Covenanat can have the biggest effect on the game with out being ever set on the tabletop.
