Does anyone even use the IAL still? Especially when it almost never gets updated (big shocker there) and there are vastly superior alternative systems available? Armybuilder being chief amongst those.

How are they trying to keep up when the Armybuilder maintaners have been putting out updates regularly & consistently? The last one was just a few days ago, 18 SEP 06, and was simply a bug fix/patch since they already had all of the existing 40k armies in it. And that's just 40k. Then there's Fantasy, FoW, Warmachine, Mordheim, yadda yadda yadda. One program. That cost less than one of the two IAL's you need for 40k...

Well I have army builder as well, but prefer AOTI, EOTI.

It did take way to long for these updates to come out, but super glad they did.

Except us old army builder users, that hate the new one, only get the updates we put out ourselves now.

At least GW is still supporting the old thing.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Finally, I have sent them an email for information about an update three times and never got an answer.

I prefer AOTI en EOTI as well!

I'm very glad they still support it!!!

I use IAL and I am so happy that they finally got around to updating the programs. The only problem will be in a month or so when the Eldar will need an update.

Look forward to a several year wait on the next update.

Army Builder is vastly superior, and keeps up with changes in a fairly timely manner. The GW product had several very basic errors (like incorrect stats) when I tried it. There's really no comparison.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Great they've finally updated it. I've always liked the program. Works for me.

Seems ridiculous that people still are not upset by GW's  total lack of regard for its "followers".

Not sure how long the interactive army lists were out for, but it seems to be more than 1.5 years.  In that time a few codexi have been released (I believe tyranids, Space Marines, & Tau, maybe more.  I am sketchy about how long it has been out for because I laughed so hard when it came out I couldn't believe anyone would buy it)

Biggest drawbacks

1.  GW spends very little time updating this idea.  Basically they sold it years ago and just said "F&^@ IT"  until the last week or so. . .  .  SO if you played a space marine army from the time of the codex release to about right now it was doing nothing for you but collecting dust on your shelf. ..

2.  You've got to buy both versions to create army lists, at 30 dollars it might have been somewhat worthwhile but $30 each?!?

3.  Army builder is pretty close to dead on with points cost and all the latest updates.  AB has been running an updated version of Codex Space marines after about 5-6 week after the release of the codex.  Match that up against GW

4. Army builder is 40  vs 60

5. Army builder is more frequently updated.  Can be self updated. and runs dozens of other gaming systems.

In closing I am glad to see GW  living up to their responsibilities at long last.  This update is about a year too late.  Maybe if GW stays on top of this and continues to support the system I might not be so critical.  It seems like GW is making an effort to be more concerned about the needs of their customers.  For me it's too late.  I got fed up with their usual BS and I found other game systems that are cheaper, better run, and frankly more fun to play.

I still play 40K but I won't be adding anything else to the collection. . .

IAL, according to the website, doesn't support Witch Hunters. :-(

Army Builder is a fine product and it was worth my cash.

Is Army Builder a downloadable product, or is it merchandise requiring a purchase? Just curious as to how I'd go and get a copy.

Darrian, when I checked the website a few days ago it never mentioned them.

Corpsman, there's a downloadable version, not sure if they still make the retail one.

It's available both as a downloadable product as well as a retail boxed item. You can get the download at the developer's webpage: Lone Wolf Studios. In a show of support for the local indy retailer, they do suggest purchasing the retail box at your LFGS (providing they carry it, of course).

Not sure if it was that long ago, but it was a while ago, just a bit after the 4th edition SM Dex came out.

I know everybody loves to bash GW, but this thread was more for notifying people who do have AOTI and EOTI that updates have been made available.

Great news for me since my two main armies are bugs and templars.

I used to like Army Builder, but I hate the new version and business model. As far as I am concerned it really should go open source. It is all user community supported and they reap the benefit. Not only am I being "forced" to go to the new product, I am going to have to pay quite a bit to install AB on all the computers I generally use. Then I will have to keep paying them over time for it by basically "renting" the product yearly. All that for a product that the user community puts all of it's own work into. Why don't they pay the people that work on the files some of their profits?

So for once, I actually like what GW has done business wise. In the long run I pay less for their product.

Whoah, whoah, whoah, you aren't paying to rent their product. You pay for a standard software license that lets you use the program at full capacity for as long as you like. The renewal they ask for is only to continue to have access to automatic updates, which using the developer's website/bandwith. Thats it. After a year, you can use the program to full capacity and still get updates, you just have to add them in manually, which is a piece of cake (and no harder than downloading the file from the maintainers).

AB2 is still out there and still getting updated too!

Yeah, so while you had to wait nearly two years for an update, people using Army Builder had their software updated within weeks of a new codex's release.

@ nyarlathotep667: Could you repost the link, or check that site? When I click on it, my browser comes up empty, and when I Googled it, I found a pottery-making Lone Wolf Studios, and a tentative website for some up and coming software design company.

Thanks.

Your nack for stating the obvious is second to none.

Here is some more obvious stuff for you:

This thread is about the new Updates about for GW's IAL software, not a comparison with AB.

If  you want to compare the two... START YOUR OWN THREAD ABOUT THAT!

Oh, and I guess you missed the part where I stated I also had AB, so I did not wait to long.

@Methoderik, Don't let the blind GW hatred get to you. Some people are so jaded, that no matter what GW does they will see something wrong with it.

I am not the biggest fan of GW, but I try to reserve my criticism for more obvious shortcomings, like prices and rules.
