Hey everyone!  Long time no post; had a rough summer with friendship issues, and I started college so I had to put alot of stuff on hiatus.  I've made the decision to stick with Warhammer Fantasy and Mordheim/Empire in flames, mostly for collection till I find opponents.

So I would like to ask...how well recieved was this new edition?  Did they nurf our rules?  Is 7th edition WHF bad?  Have they broken them like 40k?  Or is it more streamlined, and better off?

Generally looks good. They did a very nice job cleaning up the panic rules, and downpowered big mages a bit. There are still some maddeningly unclear things, however, and some seemingly obvious problems didn't get fixed.

What obvious problems went unaddressed? I am considering getting the special edition rule book AND the regular one next payday...

A lot of the weapons rules could have used a little tweak to make them more desirable and encourage more variety. Instead they made small nerfs to great weapons and the HW & shield combo. I think the rules for removing casualties desperately needed some explanation of how you deal with it when units need to be moved to stay in contact. Such as fighting a unit in the rear- which unit moves? Or two units fighting opposite ends of a unit with a long line formation (like cavalry, or a Raised undead blocking unit). This was obviously unclear in 6th and hasn't been covered in 7th either.

GW made units need to be 5 wide to get rank bonus, which makes ranked infantry cost more to do what they do best. They were already kind of weak compared to cavalry and skirmishers, and this actually makes them weaker by comparison instead of better. This isn't a big problem for cheap horde infantry (who were pretty effective before), but hurts the expensive infantry, who really could have used a boost. They have made skirmishers susceptible to march-blocking, and the one army book coming out now (O&G) has their cavalry made more expensive, though, so maybe they are (sort of) working on it.

Overall though, it looks pretty solid. In addition to cleaning up panic, they simplified fleeing and pursuit in good ways. There are lots of small changes that will take some getting used to. I'm definitely going to miss Lapping, though taking it out does definitely streamline, and avoids some weird charge situations.

So I wonder if Chaos Warriors are going to be of any use thanks to this 5 model rank rule.  Thoughts?

Nope, Chaos Warriors are simply too expensive now and forget about Chosen. Especially if you play in a MSU environment. While I can adapt to the 5-wide rank rule, it seems to have put the death knell on elite heavy infantry, who already weren't particularly useful before.

Chosen Warriors have always been prohibitively expensive. I did have some success in 6th with 12 to 20 man regular Warrior units, though no more than two.

I think you can still field them in 7th, but you'll want minimum units. 10 to 15 guys (usually only 10, but 12 or 14 considered for fluffy sacred numbers), deployed 5, 6, or possibly even 7 wide if your opponent's also on 25mm wide bases. I can't see fielding more than one or two units like this, though. You need most of your points to be in faster cavalry, furies, and beasts units.

Woah wait skirmishers can be march blocked? How unskirmishy! Does this apply to fast cavalry? I'm a prolific Yeoman user...

As for the five wide rule...aw crap, thats slowed.

Nerfed great weapons by not allowing them +2 str on horseback, only +1? (If so woot for halberds).

Nerfed HW + S combo by making WS4 required? If so, my Men at Arms of Bretonnia are next to useless now; though overall that makes empire swords men far more powerful.

Did they nerf the pistoliers by not letting you shoot in CC?

Where did you hear/read that?

I didn't, I was asking if it was (it was a question).  It was a rumor around here before I left.

I've heard nothing about, including in Ed's review. Not happening.

That was one of the rumors. The change we ended up with was that the extra +1 save only applies to the front, not against enemy to the flank or rear.

Fast cavalry have always been march-blockable.

So can I still fire pistols in melee?
