WAR WITHOUT END

Empire Games is proud to announce its second Warhammer 40,000 tournament in our great new 4900 square foot location. Get ready for three rounds of pitched battle in Games Workship’s epic science fiction setting. This tournament will be focused on fun and fast-paced action. New scenarios! New tables! Get your army ready, because you do not want to miss this.

At Empire Games we believe that nothing beats an exciting battle between two fun players with interesting, well-painted armies. The scoring system is built to reward players who bring varied, attractive, flexible armies, as well as to reward players for being fun to play against, as opposed to taking the game too seriously. The overall winner will be determined by a composite score measuring all these factors, as well as (of course) their triumphs upon the field of battle. The tournament scenarios will encourage armies which can succeed at multiple objectives, not one-dimensional armies
capable of doing only one thing. There will be prizes for the overall winner and for the best-painted army, and there will be other surprises on the day.

Last time 18 players showed up and did glorious battle, with the evil Lost and the Damned taking home the overall trophy, and a gorgeous Deathwing army taking best painted. Will your army be next? Show up and find out!

How much does it cost? $15 gets you in and gets you a pizza lunch.

Where is it? Empire Games, 33 South Commercial Street (lower level parking lot, in the same entrance as the Bike Barn), Manchester NH 03101. Go to www.empiregamesnh.com or dakkadakka.com for more details. Or call (603) 627-4263.

When is it? November 11th, starting at 11am sharp. The store will open at 10:00am, please arrive by 10:30am at the latest for registration. Players will be permitted a peek at the new scenarios before the tournament starts, so the earlier you arrive the better prepared you will be!

What should I bring? Bring your 1500pt army built for Standard missions, dice, a measuring device, rulebook and codex, and any templates you need. Also bring three or more clear and readable copies of your army list, showing points costs for all units and upgrades. Don’t forget a good attitude, an appetite for pizza, and an even bigger appetite for battle!

If you have any questions contact Empire Games at (603) 627-4263 or at our
website, www.empiregamesnh.com .

See you there!

War Without End Tournament Rules Packet

The overall winner of the tournament will be determined by total score over four categories. Battle, Painting, Composition, and Sportsmanship. While winning your battles is clearly the most important factor in a wargame, Games Workshop games are at their best when all of these factors are represented. And the best player is the one who exemplifies all these factors.

Game Rules

Following is a brief list of clarifications to rules which are not as clear as we might wish. If you have any other questions ask a judge or check the rulebook. If you have a question which significantly affects your army, submit it to the organizers before the tourney and we will answer it and add it to the list of clarifications. Judges’ rulings are final and will attempt to be consistent with the published rules, but we reserve the right to make a quick ruling (which may or may not be in 100% correct by the rules) in the interest of keeping the game and the tournament flowing.

Blast, Ordnance, and flamer templates can hit and kill models out of LOS if the template is targeted at and placed on a model in LOS.

Models disembarking from a wreck cannot disembark onto the wreck itself.

Drop pods which scatter on top of friendly models will stop 1” away, as with enemy models and impassible terrain

Battles Scoring

19 points will be awarded for each win, 14 points for each draw, and 9 for each loss. Each scenario also includes bonus points for secondary objectives, up to 6 points. For a possible maximum of 24 points in each game, and a total maximum Battles score of 75.

Painting Scoring

A major part of the hobby is building and painting the models. An attractive army is a joy to play against, while unpainted models are both less enjoyable and harder to distinguish on the tabletop. Each question on the following list is worth 2 points, for a maximum of 20 points. At the end of the day you will also vote for the best painted of your three opponents. Each such vote is worth another 2 points, for a maximum of 26 points from Painting.

1. In the judge’s opinion, was there honest effort put into painting this army?
2. Are ALL the models in this army COMPLETELY painted?
3. The above question is worth DOUBLE!!!
4. Are ALL the miniatures based up in a pleasing fashion? (Painted and textured as well)
5. Does the army feature insignia, camo schemes, or eye catching items?
6. Do the character models and centerpieces standout?
7. Does this army look like an army?
(This means the army holds together cohesively when looked at; models in one unit don't clash blatantly with models from another unit, unless that's obviously part of the concept, like a Marine Crusade Army.)
8. Was EXTRA time and effort put into the painting of cool details?
(This addresses conversions, extra details on bases, hand painted banners, kill markings on squads or vehicles, etc.)
9. In the judge’s opinion was this army painted to an above average standard?
10. Is this army one of the judges’ top three picks?

Composition Scoring

An army scores based on the following list, with a maximum of 22 points. Each Yes answer is worth 2 points, except for questions 7, 9 and 11, which are each worth 4. At the end of the third round each player will also vote for his favorite army of the three he played against. Each vote an army gets is worth an additional 2 points, for a total maximum of 26 points. All questions are cumulative.

1. Does the army have no more than one of any given HQ unit?

2. Does the army have more than two Troops units?
3. Does the army have no more than three of the SAME Troops unit?
4. Does the army have no more than two Troops units with the same unit upgrades?
5. Does the army have no more than two of the same unit with the same upgrades in any other category?
6. Does the army have EITHER no Elite units or one Elite unit?
7. Does the army have at least two Elite units but no more than two of the same Elite unit?
8. Does the army have EITHER no Fast Attack units or one Fast Attack unit?
9. Does the army have at least two Fast Attack units but no more than two of the same Fast Attack unit?
10. Does the army have EITHER no Heavy Support units or one Heavy Support unit?
11. Does the army have at least two Heavy Support units but no more than two of the same Heavy Support unit?
12. Judge’s discretion (2-4pts)- Is this army particularly well themed and interesting in a way that doesn’t already earn it the maximum 22 points?

For the questions asking about multiples of a selection from the Force Organization chart, units count as duplicates if they are taken from the same entry in the codex. For example, two Space Marine Terminator squads count as two of the same Elite unit. But a Space Marine Terminator squad and a Terminator Command squad would not be the same unit, because they have separate entries in the codex.

For the questions about unit upgrades, this refers to additional weapons or upgrades on vehicles, heavy weapons, grenades, squad leader upgrades, transports, or anything else you can buy for a unit other than additional members. Units given no upgrades at all do not count against you, even if the unit has no upgrade options.

The judge’s discretion points are reserved in case someone brings a fun and fluffy army which does not conform to the checklist for one reason or another. A Saim-Hann army with lots of jetbikes in Fast Attack slots would be a good candidate.

Sportsmanship Scoring

Sportsmanship scoring attempts to define some intangible things. What makes someone enjoyable to play against? What things do people do that make the game less fun? Sportsmanship scoring also attempts to tangibly reward people who make the whole gaming experience more pleasant, and discourage people from the opposite. With that in mind, this new sportsmanship scoring system is meant to make the actual scoring a little more objective.

Following is a list of potential questions. At the end of each round each player will be given a sheet with six questions. Three positive and three negative. Each person starts with a baseline score of three, and that is adjusted up and down based on the answers to these questions. So in each round you may earn from 0-6 points. Every player will have the same questions each round, but you will not know exactly what you are being scored on until after the round is over. In this way we hope people will be encouraged to be good sports all around, without making people go down a long checklist after every game.

When you receive your checklist, fill in your opponent’s name and the round number, but do NOT complete the checklist in their presence. We find that filling in the scores in front of one’s opponent leads to many people simply agreeing to give each other the maximum, whether or not it has been earned. Try to be as honest and fair as possible.

At the end of the third round you will also be asked to vote for your favorite opponent of the day. Each vote earns the player an extra two points, so the basic range is 0-18 with a potential maximum sportsmanship score of 24.

Was my opponent friendly and pleasant? +

Did my opponent bring up or remind me of a rule, which was to my advantage or his disadvantage, which I had not thought of or mentioned? +

Did my opponent display willingness to remind me to move or shoot a unit I had forgotten? +

Did my opponent make at least one tactical decision (a move, shot, or assault) during the game, which was done because it was “in character” for his army or unit, even though another move would clearly have been a better tactical choice? +

Did my opponent display willingness to cheerfully and accurately answer questions I had about his units, special rules, or army list? +

If there was a rules question or disagreement, did my opponent offer EITHER to play it my way OR to consult the rules or a judge with me? Alternately, were there NO rules questions or disagreements in the entire game? +

Did my opponent make an effort to play fairly quickly, to make sure we got the whole game played in the time allotted, or at least as much of it was possible? +

Did my opponent do something else not on this list (try to think of something concrete) which just generally made the game a more fun and exciting experience for me? +

Was my opponent generally an exceptionally fun opponent, a cut above the usual guys I play with, even if they’re great? +

Did my opponent sportsmanship that I aspire to myself? +

Was my opponent sullen, unfriendly, or otherwise actively unpleasant? -

Do I have unresolved questions about my opponent’s measurements or movements? -

If there was a rules question or disagreement, did my opponent react negatively to a suggestion to consult the rules or a judge? -

If there was a rules question or disagreement, and it was resolved in a mutually-agreed way (checking the rules, consulting a judge, etc.), did my opponent continue to argue the issue or complain about the outcome? -

Did my opponent get sullen, unfriendly, or quit the game if luck was against him or he was losing? -

Did my opponent play very slowly, delaying the game, possibly for tactical advantage? -

Did my opponent do something else not on this list (try to think of something concrete) which just generally made the game a less fun and enjoyable experience for me? -

Was my opponent just generally a significantly LESS pleasant opponent than average, distinctly LESS fun than most people I’ve ever played against? -

Did my opponent not come prepared to the game? Did they have to borrow dice, counters, tape measures, books, or some other basic piece of gaming equipment? -

Quick update: Here are a couple of questions I've gotten regarding tourney rules and restrictions.

Q: Can we use stuff from Imperial Armour?

A: Many things in Imperial Armour are super cool and would be neat to see fielded. We would appreciate it if you notify me first so I can approve on a case by case basis, but for the most part Imperial Armour should be fine. The only major exception is Superheavies and such which take additional force org charts. We would require that you have a copy of the rules with you so that the judges and any of your opponents can read them if we happen to be curious.

Q: Are there any requirements as far as models go? IE I have custom models I made for Chaos spawn that fit the dimensions of spawn, can they be used? Also, I know that the scoring is also based on painted models, must all models be painted to enter the tournament?

Custom chaos spawn are very much welcome. The main guidelines we would expect people to abide by for conversions are that the models correspond fairly closely to the size of the existing model and that they be WYSIWYG as much as possible. If a conversion is armed with a Lascannon, it should look as much as possible like a Lascannon, or at least like every other Lascannon in the army so as to avoid confusion. Chaos Spawn are obviously great conversion fodder, and unlikely to cause confusion, so I look forward to seeing them!

Unpainted models are okay in the tournament. Obviously the fewer the better, both for your painting scores and the enjoyment of your opponents, but as long as it's not most of the army, I would have no problem with it.

ROCK!

BRING ON THE BUGS!

I'll try to get in a league game with you beforehand too, if you like. Only problem is that this Tuesday the wife and I are headed to Salem, and next Tuesday is her birthday, so I'm going to miss league night for the next two weeks. That said, we could still probably get in a game another night.

Boston

The tournament was a blast. Atmospheric tables, fun opponents, and a well-thought out event. Speaking as one of the crew coming up from Boston, Empire Games is an impressive store. The stock of wargaming supplies, hobby supplies, and terrain is deep, and the gaming space is open and airy. If you haven't had a chance to visit the store, it's well worth the trip.
On top of which, the tournament itself was lively. Many thanks, Ragnar, for setting everything up. I particularly liked the scoring system. The comp ideas proved eminently workable and, it seemed to me, not unduly restrictive.
I'm definitely down for the next one.

edited: spelling.

I also had a great time especially playing against new people that I've never played. I was also pleased to see the variety of armies represented. Although I clearly have a lot of work to finish painting my IG and practice to play competitively. THANK YOU RAGNAR for again running an awesome event. Thank you everyone else for participating. I have a new mission to finish the army with some tweaks for February. Hopefully I'll see some of you guys for the League in the meantime.

Thanks again,

Christian

I posted this earlier but it may go unnoticed so .......

That was one of the best 40k events I have ever seen.
Why?
Well the players were AWESOME!
When a group of gamers gather have fun and make new friends thats the best part of gaming for me.
Ive had the players thank me for hosting this event at Empire but I dont know how to say thanks to those players for making the "atmostphire" and reminding me why I do this. The people!
And Thanks to Ragnar for putting together a event format that really brings back the fun and commradship that gaming was founded on.
Thanks everyone hope to see you at the next one!
Gordon

Edited. Sorry about that, Chris. You were the only math error on there, too. Weird.

I put together a quick battle report (over in the battle report section) with pictures of some of the armies. (Sorry it took me so long to get them up. We ran into a little trouble with our DorkaMorka gallery last week.)

Hey Gordon, sounds cool!

How do you mean 900pts and 1 HQ and 1 Troop selection? Most armies would have a lot of trouble spending 900pts on two units.

Are you saying it's actually a standard Force org chart (1-2 HQ, 2-6 Troops, 0-3 Elite, HS and FA), except that you are limited to a maximum of one HQ and 1 Troops selection? So you could still take however many Elites, HS, and FA as you could fit into the 900pts (and 3 slots of each)?
