What sort of personality does he have? I always imagined him to be Mooshi. and copy/paste from that link.... ***** I went to Borders downtown to buy RA Salvatore's latest Artemis book and get it signed. Really cool. He didn't read from his book, but he answered questions and talked about future things. - he's in a game studio as creative director with Mcfarlane as art director, and Schilling as CEO or something. He said he wants their first project to be a MMORPG because that's where he sees fantasy fiction heading. It's called Green Monster games. - the next Drzzt book is written and should be out next year maybe October/November but hopefully by August if they'd let him release then. - Artemis vs. Drzzt : someone already won that fight at the end of Silent Blade, he says, but he also loves to listen to people argue about it. - he likes that Drzzt has become an RPG cliche, and he talked about jokes online that make fun of Drzzt clones, and Drzzt clones he sees running by in Everquest and Everquest 2. - he hates that all Drow seem to be good these days because when he was a DM, players ran at the sight of Drow. They were the best things ever, he says, because even if you killed a Drow you couldn't loot their stuff since it disintegrated. - he didn't want to kill Chewbacca. That was an executive decision that he was hired to implement. He said it worked because the Star Wars universe was no longer safe for favorite characters, but he still regrets it. - when I told him I only really read his fight scenes he told me that I would look forward to a really awesome fight scene...in next year's book. AUGH! - he signed my book by telling me to "Beware Master Kane" or something like that. A spoiler??? AUGH! EDIT: - On giving characters names. His flippant response was that he hit a bunch of keys and hoped that enough vowels came up. His real response was that he hated naming characters. His favorite name for a character, ever, is the lovely Dwarven name Dagnabit. He needed a minor character for an epilogue in one of the earlier novels so he came up with Dagnabit. An editor phoned him and said "Dagnabit? I missed that one. Dagnabit?" To get this guy again, he wrote another Dwarven character and called him Pikel (he pronounced it Pickle). Same guy calls him up and asks "Pickle?" "No, his name is Pike-L, like the weapon." At the end of the story he reminds us that Pikel has green hair. So it's really pickle. ************* Awesome that he's involved in a game, smart guy. Hmmm, don't think McFarlane really matches Salvatore's style though.

Malfred, can you really link to your own thread as if you ripped it from somewhere else? It's not like we're stealing Brimstone's rumors from Warseer. It's linking to your own post, in the Wasteland, for God's sake.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias |

Just doing my part to attract heretics to their new home.
Salvatore does the "regular Joe" act better than G-dubya. He's got a Boston accent, a sense that what counts is that people read his writing (as opposed to any notions of "art"), and wants to smack people around for using the term "Campbellian hero." There were only 20 people at the signing so he spoke to each person and (I think) he tried to write something in the book for each person there.
For me he wrote the Master Kane thing because I told him I liked his fight sequences. Master Kane is apparently a super monk in this book.

Salvatore is by far my favorite author, and I've always wondered what I would talk about if I ever met him. It's cool that everyone there got to spend some time 1 on 1 with him. Glad to hear that there is a new Drizzt book coming, though I do gotta say that I'm psyched that he's finally fleshing Entreri's past out with this book.

Ok. Let's do the whole "relevance" thing.
RA Salvatore = fantasy fiction author. Fantasy fiction authors = imaginary worlds. Imaginary worlds = 40k, WHFB, gaming. 40k, WHFB, gaming = Dakka Discussions
McFarlane is the owner of McFarlane toys, which people have used to convert Dragons and stuff on the boards. They're also incredibly detailed and cool.
Perhaps the name you that was most OT was Schilling, which you missed. But he owns the game company so that's fair game.

Do not use the CLEAR dice!
Dear Whiny Space Marine Players, you get 3+ armor saves on all your troops (save scouts), Assault cannons, a huge assortment of vehicles and weapons, arguably one of the best if not THE best tank in the game, funny helmets, and a partrige in a pear tree.
suck it up, space marines. You're the emperor's chosen superhuman warriors. stop whining like a guardsmen and take it like a superman! |

Years ago, when TSR still was around, they had an account with AOL. One night in the official DnD chat we were talking about the GREAT fantasy authors....Moorcock, Leiber, Smith, Howard, Vance, Tolkien, Lewis, Norton.....and someone asked me what I thought about RA Salvatore. So I typed....Salvatore sucks, he couldn't write a book if posessed by the spirit of William Faulkner. Just as I hit, enter, TSR Salvatore entered the room...yup that was him. I chuckled. Sorry....don't wanna start a flame war, just had to share my one encounter with him. He was gracious about it. Now when I wrote the first scathing review of the last Dragonlance book on the DL newsgroup, Tracy Hickman wrote a whiny rant. I think the failure of that book to do well in sales justified by review.

There are moments that I hate Salvatore. But when the weapons are drawn, and the magic comes to bear, I find the adventures far better than whatever crazy Elminster stuff Greenwood came up with.
If I want poetic writing, I'll read Ursula Leguin.

And just a note: I finished Road of the Patriarch today and holy crap is RA Salvatore random.
"Let's fight the Citadel of Assassins!
"Let's fight the paladin king!"
"Let's fight the pervy priests!"
It's like he's writing his adventures based on an encounter table.

I am just waiting for the day somebody picks his stuff up for animation. His fights would really be something to see Maybe Studio Madhouse, that would be nice, they seem to be doing alot of US stuff lately (Highlander animation)

There was a comic done though, but I haven't seen it. Only the covers, and it looked pretty generic.

Yeah, the graphic novel series for Homeland, Exile and Sojourn are ok. However, you miss a lot of what was great about an RA Salvatore novel which is the fact that he writes good action sequences. Suddenly someone's drawn it for you and it doesn't seem to work quite as well anymore.
At least that's my opinion.

I liked Leguin until I read Tehanu? Is that it? The one Sparrowhawk book that was very anti-male.

Green Angel, yeah that would be Tehanu. If you read her stuff, however, she's not really anti-male so much as open minded in general. Tales of Earthsea has some interesting stories, and her science fiction often has different sexes (and some I never heard of!). But as always she writes whatever she writes like poetry.
