Adepticon is coming in March, and if I'm going to play at the Con I wanted to
learn Warhammer Fantasy and finish my Wood Elves army for the Escalation
game.

*1000/2000/3000 point armies use the standard at that specified point level.
(i.e. No lord characters at 1000, one at 2000, etc&hellip

*You may use one (1) Special Character at 2000pts and two (2) at 3000pts.

I've already got...

32 Glade Guard
8 Glade Riders
12 Dryads
10 War Dancers
20 Eternal Guard
1 Wood Elf Noble

I was thinking...add a dragon?

I have no clue what I'm doing.

I would keep what you have and add Orion, 3-5 man Wild Rider units. Spellsinger level 2 or 3, tree kin for strength and HtH, maybe treeman. That should give you 3000+pts to choose from. Put a wood elf hero with wild riders, spellsinger with second group and Orion with third. The hero should have the moonstone while the spellsinger 2 dispel scrolls.

Go crazy on the Orion? What's so good about that?

Also, should I beef up some of the odd units (such as the Glade Riders) since they
are fielded in packs of 5 now?

EDIT: My first question sounded snippy. I'm just curious what's so good about him.

I?m not usually a fan of special characters, but Orion is fast and hard-hitting, and he fills up points so fielding 3k is less expensive cash-wise. He would kind of take the place of a Dragon rider.

Another good option may be two Treemen. One in a Rare slot, and possibly an Ancient using a Lord slot. The Ancient is bad news (especially if you?re mean and give him Annoyance of Netlings), and the guys cost a ton of points, again reducing the size and money cost of the army.

If you field any Eternal Guard and/or Treemen, a Battle Standard Bearer is virtually mandatory. If you field multiple units, you will kick yourself if you don?t take him. Either run him around behind a Treeman and near the EG (make those two units a team) or put the BSB right in the EG for extra CR, and give him items to make him as hard to kill as possible.

You will need magic defense. I would say at least two mages with max scrolls, or maybe a L4 Spellweaver with 3 scrolls + Ranu, plus an L2 with two scrolls.

A second box of Glade Riders would probably be a good idea. They do good march-blocking, diverting, flee-blocking, etc. Buying second box of them allows you to field three units of five.

32 GG is probably good. The most I?ve generally used is four units of ten., but at 3k points, depending on table size, you may be a bit short on space. Two of 10 and one of 12 should work fine. The 12 man unit could even have a standard, as it makes for decent bait. The 10 man units usually no command or just a musician.

You?ll want more Dryads, unless you?re excluding them for theme reasons. 3-4 units of 8-10 are almost mandatory. They?re cheap and good.

One big unit of 10 Wardancers can work well, as can a couple of smaller units. At 3k two units of 10 may be a good option.

Wild Riders are awesome. I can?t imagine fielding 3k without at least one unit. 6-7 is usually a good size, but one big uber-unit could work at this points level, as could multiple units of 5-6.

Awesome advice as always, Ragnar.

I'm sick of painting those glade guard. Guess I'll be shifting to tree men and
Dryads and Wild Riders next. Coolness.

Should I do the whole Eternal Guard with noble thing? Does he become the
standard bearer then? I'm not quite sure of how the game works yet. Going
to get some practice in over winter break.

The EG become Stubborn if you put a Noble or Highborn in the unit. Doesn't matter if he's a BSB or not. You obviously get a lot more reliability from your Stubborn EG and Treemen with a BSB within 12". If he's NOT in the unit, he's often easier to keep alive, because you can keep him hidden behind the unit / Treeman. If he's in the unit, as soon as they get into combat your opponent will start allocating as many attacks as he can against the BSB to get rid of him. Since the book came out, a lot of players have put a combat Noble or Highborn in the unit (Great Weapon and Amber Pendant is a popular combo, usually with some kind of defensive item too) and kept a cheap BSB within 12", but out of melee himself.

Of course, 7th edition has made it more desireable for the BSB to be in the unit, since he doesn't have as much protection from shooting as he used to, and the Battle Standard +1 to CR now stacks with the +1 from the unit standard. But again, he needs defensive items to keep him alive. T3 and W2 doesn't last long otherwise, even with high WS.

I haven't had any time for painting WHFB since the Colonial, so I still don't have a unit of EG together. That said, all analysis I've read indicates that a block needs that Stubborn and BSB to really be good. If it has these, even if it doesn't win combat (though it certainly can win against some units) it will make a great anvil, holding enemy units in place for you to flank and crush them.

BTW, for more WE goodness, did you read my Colonial battle report? And the thread a few months ago when we were talking about the uses of Glade Riders?

Dude, I haven't started thinking tactics. My only thought was "If you can
paint 500 points, you're probably on your way to painting an army", which
has turned out to be true.

So now I have to learn how to play the stupid game

Time to search...

Dip your dryads, you'll finish them quickly.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

That's ok. I enjoy painting. Also, painting puts a limit on my spending, believe it or not.
