What I refering to is the Post in Dakka discusions "HEADS UP MODS"  it devolved into sillyness but the posters seemed happy enough.  should discusions like that even though they are getting silly be allowed to continue or should the Mods shut them down?  where can posters on this site just unwind and be a bit silly?  should they make a new section for us called "and all that silly stuff"?  DO the Poll and then have a discusion silly or not till it gets shut down or you get a space for silly discusions.

What's that a nonsense question? If a topic goes on or not is decision of the mods. I like hijacked threads more then nonsense threads about hight tech weapons (just an example). But they are not really a problem.

If they can't be shut down, what's the fun of sending a thread OT? Half the fun is getting it in before lock!

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

I'd vote for "Should not be shut down" if it was an option, but it's not so I voted for "Should NOT be shut down".

so the trill is to get stuff in before the mods close it? So if they did not close it would people not bother hijack threads etc?

There is a time and place for hilarity, and Dakka Dakka is definately not the place for it. Dakka Dakka is the place for hairshirts and horseradish tea, not hilarious hijinks.

Many a good thread bemoaning the price of plastic and white metal has been cut down in the prime of life by some idiot manchild spouting some obscure cultural reference or joke about a bodily function.

Seriously, guys, grow up.

It also all depends what you're idea of 'nonsense' is. The 'Who would win' thread in 40k fluff section is clearly not relevant to the point of Dakka, but people keep it alive by posting in it. There's even one guy who started off being disdainful of the thread starter, and then joined in, extending the thread to four pages (and counting). No names mentioned.
Likewise, someone could start a thread in the hope that it'd get a reply, only to be shot down because they've not presented their thinking clearly, or because what they've said is actually wrong. If a thread isn't wanted, people will not reply to it, and it'll quickly disappear.

Guys, you're totally wrong. If you look at the maths, you'll see that Eldar jetbikes are clearly the superior troops choice. I mean, I'm going to take pathfinders anyway, just because I have them, but really...

That not entirly correct if people reply that does not always keep the thread going as the Mod can shut it down. that fair?

Mods can always shut down threads, whether we think it is fair or not.

From what I've seen, they are pretty good at allowing us reasonable fun with nonsense threads, while stomping on threads that get nasty or go on too long or go too far off topic.

The forum costs time and money to run, so I think it's reasonable for Mods to have this power.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

While I agree its sometimes essential to shut certain topics if they are becoming to lewd or cussing certain members of Dakka I also think if they are harmless fun then they should not. Sometimes its quite therapuetic to blow of steam with nonsence. Saves having to be serious and all. People can be serious at work. Forums are for enjoyment purposes and if this passes as enjoyment for some members than the Mods should not shut it down.

The sword is a weapon for killing . . .
. . . the art of the sword . .
. . . .is the art of killing . .
No matter what fancy word
. . . . . you use . . .
. . . or what titles . . .
. .you put to it . . .
. that is the only truth . .
