Yes this is a great idea, if my understanding is correct from our Press Ganger, the first one collected close to 1000 cans of food. We at Fantasy Games in Ofallon IL will be hosting the second on this Sat. We have every hope that this will be a fun event and that it will help fill the comunity food locker for the holiday season. I contacted the local paper and they showed up to do an articlel on it. They will also attempt to show up during the event and do a follow up article. So if your in the area of St. Louis/IL and want to check it out, play or just drop by some cans for the food locker we invite all of you.

I love it, and I wish we saw more gaming events with a charity element.

So it's like that assinine GW Baltimore event where they gave people in game advantages for buying certain items then playing in a megabattle. You know- the one where they said it was a big bring and battle event that was supposed to be a patriotic attempt to out do the "world's largest miniature tank battle" that happened in the UK. Opps, I mean like it other then the fact that one is for charity and one is a thinly veiled marketing event.

That sounds like a really cool idea! Before this thread becomes another GW vs PP war, as the tone has already started to lean towards, I would also like to point out that GW Canada just run two major Hall of Heroes tounrnaments at the HQ Battle Bunker as part of a November "War on Cancer" event. All the entry fees were donated to cancer research, along with any extra donations. Also, this weekend there will be a Battle Apocalypse (unlimited point battle,) that will also donate all proceeds to cancer research.

But as stated, this Foodmachine idea is really cool idea as well and should hopefully help out those in need. Good gaming!

well then in the spirt of charity and in this holiday season , let me make this challenge to all you guys who work/run game shops to do a charity event. Pick anything, local childrens hospital, cancer, food bank, aids, what ever and run an event. No reason you cant do this with Magic, GW, flames of war whatever. And if you dont work at or run a store you are a customer at one so brinf it up to the owner, offer your time to set it up and run it, get the local paper or tv news involved and get it running. These are our games and our hobby gentelmen ( and ladies) its up to us to make it work. PP ponyed up some pretty cool prizes to support the cheritable event, who says another company wont want to "keep up with the jones" Even if they dont its about charity anyways. I will try to drop an update of how our Food Machine event went. Happy holidays

Now that's a challenge we can all get behind If I had a game store, or even a game group I'd be all over that

Well here is an update for you guys who care. I left the shop this evening after my shift was over. The foodmachine event had another round to go and more cans had been added each round through most of the day. As of my leaving there was an average of 66 cans of food donated per player in the event. A damn fine turn out if I do say so my self. I will do an update on monday with some info on who won the event and what they got in swag and such, not with standing the warm and fuzzy for helping out the community food bank. Thanks to all the players, Chris our Press Ganger and PPress for the great event.

Great idea. I would give away a very well painted army if it could help local foodshare programs like this.

Awesome.

Why dont you look into that at your local shop? In fact see if you cant gather some talented painters in your area and do that for prizes for an event. I think the can good drive is a great idea and an painted army for a tournament prize would sure get folks bringing in cans by the bags. We had guys show up with cases of can goods, the local shop got hit in waves and I watched them carry out cases to add more chances to re-roll dice and such in the event. It was great to see these guys giving so much and having such a great time at it.

well, we have no shops anymore. WE are a disbanded group made for mailorder it seems.

I am thinking we could do something like this at the library. The library already had foodshare bins on occasion, so we can use this to our advantage while helping food share even more when we set our own bins out for this purpose. High traffic area to promote charity, whether your playing with dollies or not.

66 cans PER PLAYER?!?

Wow. Powergamers Against Hunger threatens to become a major charity unto itself. Awesome.

yes, per player average. We hade one guy show up with well over 100 cans, but several if not all the guys ( I really cant remember ) guys went to the store between matches , they were all caught up in the spirt of the event honestly. Chris, our Press ganger and I did our part to prod they guys a bit and we did some neat spur of the monet gemicks but it was a very relaxed enviornment and the charitable atmosphere was very cool. We had guys huddeld aroundone table, as one player spent 16 tickets to re-roll a 5 roll string of poor rolls and everyone rejoiced when he got a good roll, even his opponent! It really was some fun. We look foward to hosting this event again next year. I believe Chris posted some where they ended with 700 cans so its 70 cans per player average!
