SpikyDavid (as he posts on TWF and occasionally here) managed to take 2nd place at the third heat of the UK GTwith his shooty Ork horde.

http://warhammer.org.uk/PhP/viewtopic.php?t=22782&start=26

Back in March he went 2/2/2 with roughly the same army at the final, and posted a tournament summary in the battle reports forum:

I’m hoping we get another battle report; maybe with some more details this time!

Wow. I am impressed. Now theres an argument for those diehards who love their orks the way they are.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

And Demonhunters took 9th.

They said that there was a lot more terrain this heat than there was before which should have helped him.

Also when MEQs are the rule, and not the exception, horde armies do well.

And with all that, it is still an increadible feat to come in 2nd at a UK heat with orks.

I've played Dave's army at least three times now I think, one of which was round 6 in the final - we effectively played off for second place, he massacred me and i dropped to 14th.

It helps that Dave knows every single thing he has to do with it and every rule associated with it backwards, but the army is intrinsically nails anyway. Everything and shoots its heavy weapons, it will always have a 5+ save, and re-rolls its difficult terrain. And it never runs away.

The main problem in the previous system is that the army would win by marginal amounts. When we played this weekend f.e. i was on 13 and Dave 15, but i was over 2000 Vps margin ahead of the orks with Tau. The new system, however, is much kinder to armies like Orks and Guard that may have trouble making the massacre margin while being able to consistently win.

I would expect the Orks to be a contender for first place in the final.

I said I thought you could win it before I think didn't I? The list is nails, and you know exactly how to use it.

Still, I still reckon Farsight spam is an outside contender too, so long as it doesn't meet anymore Ork hordes

Funny that should happen. Today, my roommate (non-player) asked me which army was the most difficult to play. I said I figured that Orks were the toughest, and that only really dedicated players played them, at which point he asked me: "So are all Ork players really *#($@!)& good?"

Whatever. I thought it was funny.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

I'm definitely impressed. I mean, I knew Orks could be deceptively shooty with their four-Rokkit squads and the quantity of twin-linked stuff they have available to him, but I never really expected them to pull out such a high placing at a GT. Congratulations, man. Best of luck in the next round.

I am glad they have changed the scoring system because it actually makes my gaurd competitive again. I can win consistantly with my gaurd but it's hard to achieve a massacre against a veteren opponant. I have been looking at new builds for my gaurd because of this.

Yes, though there has been an awful lot of debate about this.  Obviously, I'm a big fan, though it's worth noting that, at the finals six months ago, I would only have scored 8 points, below halfway, whereas I actually finished in the top third
