So after converting a flying Hive Tyrant with a barbed strangler jetpack instead of wings, I have come to realize that I would really like to get into sculpting , converting, etc. my own creations(preferably mecha first, as I am more familiar with them anyway and they seem easier than organic models).  However, I lack just about any tools or experience at all.  I have read the Modelling faq and took note of the suggestions, but it seems a bit overwhelming at first.

The point is, can anyone really "crystallize" what I would need, as a novice converter, into a "Christmas List" of basic tools?  Preferably, I would like to use plasticard, Green Stuff, Kneadatite Brown (for structural support), as well as pin vices for heavier parts(I have never even seen one of these).  Help is greatly appreciated.

Dakka. You need more of it. No exceptions.

What are you talking about? They're Space Marines, which are heroic. They need to be able to do all the heroic stuff. They fight aliens and don't afraid of anything. -Orkeosarus

Id ask for a gift certificate to a hobby store and a hardware store like Ace... even maybe an Art supplies store.

A lot of the stuff you want can be found in these type stores. IMO its better if you go and pick it out to make sure its the right item/size.

dremel, safety glasses (you only have 2 eyes and bio-science cannot yet regrow them) set of dental tools, pin vice, sharp razor knife with a good handle could have a replacable blade OR it could be cheaper just to buy a new knife whenever the blade gets dull, wooden toothpicks, superglue, zap instant cure, the list goes on.

Do not use the CLEAR dice!

Dear Whiny Space Marine Players,
you get 3+ armor saves on all your troops (save scouts), Assault cannons, a huge assortment of vehicles and weapons, arguably one of the best if not THE best tank in the game, funny helmets, and a partrige in a pear tree.

suck it up, space marines. You're the emperor's chosen superhuman warriors. stop whining like a guardsmen and take it like a superman!

Well, I have/have access to toothpicks, various surplus unused medical tools( okay for sculpting but usually too fragile for much else) and other various household doodads.

I realise that I will want a pin-vice. However, I don't even know what they look like. What do I look for in a good vice?
