Hey. I'm getting into 40k and I need some advice before I spend major $$.

I love the look/feel of the Necrons and I hear they are pretty solid. However, some folks say they're boring/cheezy. I have no problems with the same "look" over and over, because I like the look and I hate painting.

Some say the Eldar are the way to go, because they have so much variety. However, I'm not always the most tactical of players (I can admit it) and often realize an error one round late. Anyway, that can be fixed with regular play.

What I need to know is: against Marines, Chaos Marines, Sisters, which army would be fun to play? I'm not going to a GT anytime soon or anything. This is just local game store kind of fun.

Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your time, everyone.

I hate Eldar, and am considering starting the Necrons myself.

People will call cheese at just about anything that kills them well. It also happens that Necrons can kick the tar out of Eldar, which is just another reason to pick them up! :p

The people who say Necrons are boring is because they've only got a few units that are really any good: Warriors, Immortals (these are probably the best thing in the list), Normal Destroyers, Scarabs, and the Monolith.  Everything else is pretty crappy and is best left avoided.  Also their HQ's come in one of two configs that are really worth using: Lord with Ressurection Orb and Veil of Darkness, and a Lord with Destroyer Body, Ressurection Orb, and possibly a Warsythe.  Some people will take different configs, but generally you will always have one or two lords with Ressurection Orbs or you'll find that you'll quickly lose games to the Phase Out rule.

They also pretty much revolve around shooting the crap out of stuff, staying nearby a Necron Lord with a Ressurection Orb, and Teleporting away if they get into Combat.  However I feel that it is a very fun list and playstyle, but it will piss a lot of people off because when played right it will just hose a lot of armies.

If your just starting out, Eldar may not be the way to go. Necrons would be better, since IMO their an easier army to learn, and play.

Go Necrons. Don't ever let anyone calling army "x" cheese prevent you from putting said army together as people will and do call any army cheesy regardless of how valid the comment actually is. You're the one that has to buy, build, paint and play the thing, so pick something YOU like. An army of terminators is pretty kicking rad and easy to paint to boot, so go for it.

Thanks for all your help, everyone. I'm going Necrons. I just love their design. And if anyone whines about cheese, I'll gauss them.

With the popularity of Eldar right now and their air force I suggest going Crons also so you can get a lot of glances on those skimmers.

I agree that you should stick with Necrons because they are simply easier to get the hang of for someone who isn't very tatically-minded.

That said, Necrons can be hard to win with against some opponents. With manuevarability being the key to many missions in 4th edition it behooves any player starting a Necron army to remember the main ways to gain mobility in a Necron army (in descending order of usefulness IMO):

1) Destroyers, especially since they can Turbo-boost.
2) Lord with Veil of Darkness teleporting Necron units around the board with him.
3) Monolith Portal teleporting Necron units (especially if the Monolith Deep Strikes).
4) Wraiths and Scarabs, especially since they can Turbo-boost.
5) Flayed Ones who Deep Strike.

Just buying units for your army without basing the army on these units/tactics is a sure-fire way to make your Necron force highly ineffective.

I personally believe that a Necron army that is Destroyer heavy with at least one Monolith and a Lord with a Veil of Darkness can be a very tough army to beat as they will have a ton of shooting (Destroyers), a rock hard vehicle (the Monolith) to draw heavy fire away from the Destroyers, and plenty of speed from all three sources to capture objectives.

Regarding Deep Striking Monoliths. Don't (If you have the option).

As cool as it is, it has been my experiance that I much prefer to have the tank on the table at the start and do some damage and/or save a squad from excessive ire, to beam them out of trouble.

Church: So it is a sword, It just happens to function like a key in very specific situations.
Caboose: Or it's a key all the time, and when you stick it in people, it unlocks their death.

California ( again)

Go with the Necrons , there the easiest army too learn( use too be the hardest but now there the easist) not to many upgrades and its pretty cut and dry.

Plus you can do the whole 80 troop army with two lords and 10 destroyers and a monolith and never get phased out and that really erks people
