To lighten the mood I thought I would throw out a new topic.

Most unfortunate moment:  Recently in a tournament, my Legio Decem (Trait Marines) were squaring off against the eldar, and I had a shooty plas cannon/gun squad holding up my left flank.  His Striking scorpians were moving closer and by turn two he was within range of the plasma gun.  First shooting my cannon shot and missed, no overheat.  Second turn I fire my plasma cannon, roll a 1, then for my armor save, I roll a 2.  Unphased Fired the plasma gun, they were just outside of double tap range, and rolled another 1.  Rolled the armor save, and another two.  My oppenent laughed as did I, what are the chances.

Most Fortunate moment:  In the same game, the turn after my plasma debacle, my opponent and his avatar are moving up the middle and the farseer, without council, and decides to cast fortune on the avatar my dev squad is perfectly set up to hit (1las,3ML).  With his eldar wargear he gets to roll 3d6 and take the lowest 2 for his psychic test.  I was waiting in the wings with my librarian and his psychic hood, but the god emperor was smiling on me at that moment.  He proceeded to roll THREE sixes on his psychic test, and due to his farseer having a ghost helm had a 3+ save on peril of the warp wounds.  He rolls a 2 on his armor save and proceeds to remove the model (GG s6 wound!) and he muttered something about karma is a *female dog*.

Anyone else have any good stories of the like?

I lost a game playing my Chaos vs. loyalist SM primarily as a result of having four plasma guns guarding a flank against a deep striking termi squad and having them all overheat and cause the gunner to die shooting the termies the turn they came in. Of course, the previous turn, all of my daemons had come in, so I didn't have any more tricks to pull out while the termies ate most of my firebase...

Later, I was watching my opponent play an Eldar player. He had one assault marine that survived combined fire from a couple of falcons, which was promptly ignored by his opponent. On the next turn, said assault marine got a rear assault on the falcon and rolled the three sixes in a row necessary to take it down. Between not having enough room to place models and the results of a destroyed transport, it killed all six fire dragons on board too.

These two examples are Warmachine examples... but are oh-so-more disgusting because the multiple dice rolled makes it all the more improbable:

Round 1.

Using the coven (FOC9), In the course of a game, I failed 5/7 magic attack rolls against DEF14.. needing 5's to hit. Two of the attack rolls was on 2D6, the remaining ones were on 3D6. Two of the 3D6 attack rolls happened one after another, with results of 4 on 3 dice. The chance of failing on 2D6 is: 1/6 chance (ok). The chance of failing on 3D6 is 1/54. The chance of 2 consecutive failed rolls on 3D6 is a boggling 1/2916.

Round 2.

Eyriss (DEF16) is standing in the open. I needed badly to kill her. So my warcaster, the Coven (FOC9) arcs a spell at her. I need 7 on 3 dice to hit her due to Perfect Conjunction stance. (Since she -had- to die, I also cast puppet strings on the Coven so that I could reroll up to all the dice once per turn). I pick up my dice and...

3 ones. I scoop up my ones and say "I planned for this eventuality, so I'll reroll all my dice". and...

3 ones. Keep in mind that 3 ones is a 1/216 chance. 6 ones is a 1/46656 chance. Argh. (I still won the game though.)

My dice hate me.

Unfortunate:
First round he one shotted my DP. I was demoralized

Fortunate
Second round Bloodletters and Furies both scattered perfectly. He was demoralized. I was remoralized.
The assaulted on two fronts creating a pincer move he never recovered from.

Another set of warmachine ones for me.

FORTUNATE: First shot of the game. Renegade runs into forest where a full squad of cylanea and her nyss rangers are hiding out. Renegade pops his shot with a boost, and gets triple sixes. Squad disappears. Second shot of the game: Mule fires his gun into a man hunter and eiryss tagteam. I boost, and he triple sixes. Eiryss and man hunter both fly into each other. Damn good game.

UNFORTUNATE: 500pt haley vs. the butcher. I had done VERY little, so had he. Two of his jacks had about 6 boxes before dying totally though, so i stood a good chance. However, the game was lagging bad. I get bored, so i charge my fully focus'd up haley into the butcher...and promptly roll ONLY ones for ALL the attacks. Haley dies.

Another unfortunate:

In that same tourney, I was preparing to counter assault a half strength black templar assault squad. I charge in with 6 marines, 1 Vet Sgt with PF, and Chaplain in jump pack. Looking down at my list I am about to say with glee "Ok that is 18 normal attacks on I5 with reroll of misses" and see that i forgot to pay for Furious Charge (mistake 1). So I base my chappy to his chappy and rest of squad to his. I attack and kill the chappy, but he gets his attacks back, instead of attacking my chappy he attacks the squad, rolls all hits, and then wounds with all of his attacks. I take one wound on my chappy with an invuln save and 4 of my 8 man squad die. I still have 2 marines, a Vet Sgt and 1 wound chappy. Marines attack and kill all but the BT Vet Sgt with pfist. He rolls to hit and gets all 3, with 3 wounds, and there go my last 3 marines.

8 man squad takes 8 wounds on 4's to hit and 3s to wound (Vow)

The Harbinger vs. Sorscha. Harbinger is close, so I advance her and
drop two cataclysms on Sorschas head. Cataclysm is a spell that automatically
hits but does less damage the farther away you are. After these two spells,
Sorscha had 4 dmg left. The Harbinger died next turn and I lost the game.

To the left of Sorscha was a Seneschal. I could have charged him,
gained an extra 3" movement (and therefore an extra 6 dmg points) and
won the game. Oops.

One time, a single guard squad managed to cause 5 wounds to my 5 man terminator squad via lasguns. I rolled 5 ones for my armor saves.

No. That never really happened, but I'm hoping if I say it out loud it never will.

For me 4 landspeeder tornados jumped a termi squad and opened up.

16 Ass cannon shots - no rends.

Overall I caused roughly 10 wounds, no failed 2+ saves.

Another time my LRC with 15 man squad had to make a twelve inch move through trees.

Dangerous terrain test rolled - snake eyes.

All of the survivors (inc the EC) pinned and shots to pieces in full view of his army.

In one of the older editions of the 'Nids, I saw a Nightfight versus IG. An unwounded Tyrant charged a lascannon squad, and killed all three guys in the front of the squad; the remaining 3 IG make their throw-in attacks: 3 hits, 3 wounds, 3 failed saves.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

Most fortunate? Have no clue. May be the time that when my Eldar opponents Wraithguard where within inches of being in range to crush my flank, I got my deepstriking termies to teleport in, and both assualt cannons got enough rending to wipe out the entire squad.

Most unfortunate... Can't even begin to explain how much misfortune I have. I'll give the most recent though. Lysander and 4 man Termy squad. I get three 8 man Tac squads with Meltas all in double tap range. I manage to kill only two terminators, and all the Meltas missed or rolled 1's to wound. But Lysander is now in the open. So my Epistolary does MoH's on himself, (rolls a one) then assualts him. 7 Attacks. 5 Hits. 4 Wounds. 4 Armor saves made... In retaliation? 4 Attacks. 1 Hit. 1 Squashed librarian. 150pt HQ wiped out the turn he gets onto the board.

most fortunate:

2 favotires

Single Missile-packing Marine making 20ish 4+ cover saves in a row in one turn and taking out an Eldar skimmer the next turn.

Killing an entire squad of teleporting Grey Knights with a single Plasma Cannon shot.

most unfortunate:

Missing with every single shot during one round with my shooty Dark Angels.

I forgot to mention my most fortunate.

My first game my chaplain with his bolt pistol faced up to a landspeeder.

after I hit. I rolled 2 sixes in a row to take it down.

The British Army, so could be any old sh*t hole in the world.

most unfortunate in a friendly game

7 man deathwing close combat termi squad and o tooled up terminator librarian in a LR crusader. Hit by a basilisk, penetrates then rolls a six all gone in a puff of smoke.

In a tourny

1200 points of orks running of the board in two turns due to griffon mortar promethium shell thing.

Fortunate

At warhammer world an eight man squad of possessed arrives at my oppponents IG firing line in turn 2, he flashlights and lascannons seven of them but the aspiring champion survives 3 daemon armour saves. He laughs unworried by this one bloke. The champion then rolls up around 800 points of gaurd on his own in the next four turns.

I don't remember many "fortunate" instances but I have several classic  "OMGWTFBBQ!!11!one!!" situations.

1.  Playing Eldar against Marines (3rd edition). Razorback carrying Librarian with Lightning claws and Termie honors+someother assaulty mess rushing my mostly guardian Eldar force.  Breaks cover to get into charge range next turn, my only opportunity to kill it all game.  1 prism cannon, 3 bright lances, 5 starcannons, one shuricannon(side armor shot), and 1 pulse laser fired at it that turn.  Not a single shot hit, and the Librarian rolled my army practically by himself.

2.  Eldar vs Tyranids(3rd edition)   I took an avatar this game, and by turn four both sides were fairly depleted with Eldar up by about 200 vp.  He has 6 Spinegaunts left with his Tyrant way behind them, and my avatar is just close enough to assault them.  He charges, whiffs all attacks, and Spinegaunts kill him with return attacks.

3.  Same game, 6 banshees + executioner armed exarch charge single biovore in his back line.  All attacks missed or failed to wound.  The biovore killed one of them, then caught them when they ran, killing the rest of the unit instantly.-(I lost this game)

4.  Playing a three-way with my Tau vs. Tyranids vs. Necrons.(3rd edition)  I set up a strong firebase with infiltrated kroot units, broadsides, a railhead, 3 firewarrior units, and a half dozen Crisis suits+my commander, and topped off with a full stealth unit.  Tyranids want no part of this, being the only approach he had to me was open ground, so he attacks the necrons.  In my turn, my three broadsides have clear shots against a completely isolated 3 man destroyer unit the Necron player absent-mindedly left in LOS.  Taking the perfect, no WBB possible opportunity, the broadsides fire.  3 ones to hit with railguns.  Thank God for Twin-linked right?  Roll again and 3 ones.

5.  Tyranids vs. Crimson Fists ( 4th edition).  A smallish game(1000)points, starting my nids.  After a couple of brutal rounds of shooting(because not one of my 6+ fleet rolls all game were higher than 2) I had several severely damaged units massing up for combined assaults.  4 Genestealers, 4 hormagaunts, 3 rending warriors, and two spinegaunts attack an 8 man scout unit with pf veteran.  I kill one, scouts wipe out warriors and kill a stealer.  Gaunts flee.  Scouts end up finishing stealers just over 50% strength.

6.  Same game, Tyrant is, by turn four, in assault range of his marines and unwounded.  Two Land speeders with assault cannons, hidden behind a bunker after being stunned umpteen million times by my gunfex, jump out and shoot him.  He is instantly killed by rends.

7.  Same forces, take and hold mission. With some good fleeting, I have taken the large terrain piece serving as the objective with my entire force.  After a unit of stealers and hormagaunts wipe his 3 scout units off of the table, his army starts showing up through deep strike or pods.  One of which is a  man Terminator unit with 2 assault cannons, followed by four Land Speeder Assault cannon types and a pod with a chaplain and his big assault marine unit.  Considering what he has to kill to take the objective, he states that he expects a loss.  All of them show up close to the objective, and kill a stealer unit as well as wounding my walking Tyrant with assault cannons again(he is very afrad of those things now).  My turn- Gunfex and Walk-rant stun one of the speeders.  The rest of the game involved his unkillable termies and my vain attempts to stop them.  In order of attack, Flyrant assaults them unwounded.  Kills one, and is killed entirely by return attacks.  Hormagaunts+genestealers that wiped out the scouts.  Killed one, stealers wiped out and gaunts run off.  Gaunts return under synapse and are wiped out.  In desperation, the only unengaged or assault cannoned-off-the-board unit are my five flying ripper swarms.  They charge, do nothing, and are killed in one turn.  To finish the game, his Chaplain and CO. charge the ten stealers remaining on the objective.  I kill three marines, and the stealers are wiped out in one turn.  I lose

8.  First 1500 point game against Tau in Cities of Death.  The presence of several railguns and plasma rifles causes me to advance my flyrant into cover so he cannot be targeted while advancing on the delightfully static Tau units.  Convinced my MC had nothing to fear from basic cover, he rolled a one on his dangerous terrain test.  No worries, I get a MC reroll.  1.  Damn.

Good:

Playing against an armored company, EVERYTIME he made his obscurity roll....I'd roll a glancing 6. Every. Time. Killed like 5 vehicals that way.

Bad:

Playing tyranids. ALL my lascannons kept missing his HT. Including the twin linked ones.

my most recent bad moment was chaos against necrons, i had a CSM squad near six pariahs within 12" so i rapid fired the bolters and shot the melta nd killed a few then next turn he shot with his pariahs and cause five wounds to which i rolled three 1s and two 2s, you'll never guess who many CSMs i had. Another reoccuring bad moment is most games i play with my night goblins, i've had a unit run off each board edge on three seperate occaisions and im going on something like 2 wins 10 losses, and the two wins were against people playing chaos and vampire counts for the first time. and i only beat the counts with one model left, my shaman who kept on running around his massive black knights regiment and casting foot of gork and work wants ya on it and his wight lord. We just kept taking turns and he passed something like 20 rolls to prevent crumbling and i kept failing to kill with my magic. a fortunate moment was that he started failing and my magic got a bit more potent.

another lucky one remembered

Playing nids my stationary truck load of burna boyz (SF) charged by a full unit of raveners all auto hit no damage at all"

In my turn move the truck a couple of inches to the end of the nice line of raveners. Each one hit four times by burnas, all dead! Nice.

Most fortunate: In a game of Warhammer Ancient Battles, on the second turn I charged one of my opponent's units. I won the combat and broke the unit. The subsequent panic checks saw my opponent's entire army flee and run off the board, never to rally. He failed every single panic and rally test he attempted.

Most unfortunate: While playing a game of 40k against a Tau army, using my Imperial Guard, at the end of the game I had a damaged chimera left, while my opponent had lost half a squad of Fire Warriors. Never before or since have my dice failed me like they did that day.

Madness is however an affliction which in war carries with it the advantage of surprise - Winston Churchill

Most unfortunate: I moved out my guard army turn one and managed to kill half a squad of firewarriors. My opponent then proceded to destroy one russ, a demolisher, two hellhounds, a chimera, and a bassie, in one turn of shooting. It was insane, if he glanced he rolled a 6.

Most fortunate: 7 straight hits with the scatter dice, longest streak ever, obliterated a slaanesh army in two turns.
