Hello everyone, I have two IG lists that I'm planning out, hopefully to use in tournaments, so I want your opinions on them!

First is:

Doctrines: Drop Troops, Veterans, Special Weapon Squads, Iron Discipline, Close Order Drill

HQ

Command Squad (Iron Discipline, Drop Troops)

JO with Honorifica Imperialis, Bolt Pistol

Standard Bearer, 2 meltaguns, 1 plasmagun

Special Weapons Squad - 3 meltaguns (DT)

Special Weapons Squad - 3 meltaguns (DT)

Sentinel - Improved Comms, extra armour, autocannon (DT)

ELITES

5 Veterans - 3 plasmaguns, boltpistol (DT)

5 Veterans - 3 plasmaguns, boltpistol (DT)

5 Veterans - 3 meltaguns, boltpistol (DT)

TROOPS

Infantry Platoon

CMD Squad - (ID, CoD)

Infantry Squad - 1 plasmagun, 1 lascannon (CoD)

Infantry Squad - 1 plasmagun, 1 lascannon (CoD)

Infantry Squad - 1 plasmagun, 1 lascannon (CoD)

Infantry Platoon

CMD Squad - (ID, CoD)

Infantry Squad - 1 plasmagun, 1 lascannon (CoD)

Infantry Squad - 1 plasmagun, 1 lascannon (CoD)

Infantry Squad - 1 plasmagun, 1 lascannon (CoD)

FAST ATTACK

2 Sentinels - extra armour, heavy flamer (DT)

2 Sentinels - extra armour, multilaser (DT)

1 Sentinel - extra armour, improved comms, autocannon (DT)

1,500 exactly, 102 infantry models, 6 sentinels. I'm not planning on dropping the infantry platoons as they will set up a firebase with their lascannons. The HQ is dropping to support the veterans and the special weapon squads with Ld tests and firepower.

The second list is a bit smaller modelwise but with more heavy tanks:

Doctrines: Iron Discipline, Drop Troops, Veterans, Close Order Drill

HQ (Iron Discipline)

JO - honorifica imperialis, bolt pistol

Standard Bearer

ELITES

5 Veterans - 3 plasmaguns, boltpistol (DT)

5 Veterans - 3 plasmaguns (or meltaguns), boltpistol (DT)

5 Veterans - 3 meltaguns, boltpistol (DT)

TROOPS

Infantry Platoon

Cmd Squad (ID, CoD)

Infantry Squad - Autocannon, plasmagun (CoD)

Infantry Squad - Autocannon, plasmagun (CoD)

Infantry Platoon

Cmd Squad (ID, CoD)

Infantry Squad - Lascannon, plasmagun (CoD)

Infantry Squad - Lascannon, plasmagun (CoD)

Infantry Squad - Lascannon, plasmagun (CoD)

FAST ATTACK

Hellhound - extra armour, heavy stubber

Hellhound - extra armour, heavy stubber

HEAVY SUPPORT

Leman Russ - extra armour, 3x Hvy Bolters, heavy stubber (we use a lot of terrain, making the secondary armament preferrable in some situations)

Leman Russ - extra armour, 3x Hvy Bolters, heavy stubber

1,487 points, 80 infantry models, 4 tanks

What does everyone think? I like the second one immensely as it has heavy tanks, but I have a feeling the first one would do better in a tournament setting as it has more lascannons and delivers more plasmagun/meltagun shots close to the target. And 106 models are more difficult to kill than 84 (contains more units as well).

First, a small thing. I like to put Medics in all of my command squads; I find it helps them survive a lot longer. So you might want to try that.

Second, I don't think your first list has enough anti-troop firepower. Some heavy bolters (in infantry squads or in fire support teams), and maybe demo charges in the Special Weapon teams would help. Some flamers could be good, too.

Third, why are you DSing your command HQ sqaud? Wouldn't it be better to keep it near your firebase to boost morale? (Or does it need to DS to allow the weapon teams to DS? I am unclear on the rules.)

Fourth, the second list looks good, but I would try to fit in an improved comms somewhere.

I am dropping the command squad to help with Ld tests and also with their melta and plasmas. I feel I have enough morale boost with the platoon command squads and CoD for the rest.

About the second list, I'll try to find 7 points from somewhere to fit it in, it's a good idea.

You don't think the list has enough firepower? To be honest, if I went against a horde then yes, it would be problematic, but let's face it, most armies in tourneys are all about min-maxed marines or mech eldar.

The Hammer

Don't forget, all those lasguns will add up against more lightly armoured targets as well.

Nice list. Definitely consider those demo charges though. Forget anti-horde, a S8 AP2 pie-plate is anti-everything.

When soldiers think, it's called routing.

Well, I think the first list does have enough guns to put up a fight against a horde army (against Space Marines you're set) but by adding some heavy bolters it could be a little more effective against hordes.

Really, with all of the DSing strength 7 and 8 guns you have, you really don't need the lascannon for anti-tank, unless you think you might be playing missions without DS, in which case 6 lascannon is a good number for 1500 point games (but 4 is acceptable). But if you will have DS every game, I would swap in some heavy bolters or autocannon into the infantry squads. They are almost as good as lascannon at killing Marines, and obviously better at killing everything else.

I would also seriously consider keeping the Command HQ by your fire base, since the re-roll from the banner is a serious boost to your infantry's morale. And since the DS units are all suicide squads anyway why do you care about their morale? They're there to die, aren't they?
