Hey there people I`ve been down to my local hobby store and I`ve been really intrigued by Warmachine, the models look awesome I must say and look fun to paint, but what are the rules like are they quite easy to get to grips with and all that.

well thats really all I need to know, but this system does look nice, thanks in advance.

The rules are pretty easy to understand. Even better, the starter boxes include a trimmed down starter rules set. And when there is a rules ambiguity, Privateer Press addresses it quickly and thoroughly on their message boards and FAQ pages.

All of the different factions are equally viable, so just pick the one with the theme/look that appeals to you and grab that starter set. That's all you need to learn the game.

The new reworked core rulebook, Prime Remix, will be available in January, so I'd hold off on buying Prime at this point. The rework will contain all of the additional rules introduced in their other expansion books, so you won't need to buy the expansion books unless you want all the storyline and the information on the specific models released in those books. Each model comes with it's own stat card with all of the important information anyway, so its debatable if the expansion books are truely necessary for game play at all once Remix is released.

Yeah once Remix is out you'll only want the books for the fluff and the campaign rules present in Escalation and Apotheosis.

I own all th books other than Apotheosis, and I often lament that I don't have the stats for the models in that expansion.  I can't justify buying it for a few extra casters and a unique jack / faction, but I can't imagine not having one of the books that covers a larger model count... especially Superiority.

Then again, YMMV.

The basic rules are quiet easy to understand and are pretty intuitive. The only tricky part is all the special rules/spells etc that different units have. It takes awhile to grasp all the various tricks and stuff that can be pulled on you (and conversly the counters you have available).

Also, there are a number of changes to Prime that you need to be aware of, especially those found in escalation (I played awhile before I realised the major changes to LOS etc). That is until remix is available then it won't matter.

It is VERY FRUSTRATING to start out playing and lose in the 1st or 2nd turn because you didnt' realize a faction could smoke you with (insert special rule) right off the bat.

However...you'll only fall for it once.

before you invest, get someone at the FLGS to demo the game for you. I'm sure there are a few 'pressganger' (PP's lay-promoters), or at the very least, knowledgeable players, who can run you through some basic 'out of the box' scenarios, teach you the rules and give you a chance to try the different factions out. If you enjoy the game, then take the plunge! If not, you can always pick up individual figs you like for painting/display or proxying purposes.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

The rules are really simple to grasp, and you'll have the hang of it within 10 minutes, tops. I will partially agree with White Dragon... it can be alittle overwhelming and frustrating, trying to take in all the new rules, but there are acouple of ways to ease the pain:

1. Find someone willing to give you intro games, and ask them for advice, or various "dirty tricks".
2. Research online. Once you take the plunge, learn your army, and then your opponents armies from battle college, and from the privateer forums. Just read their tactics forums, and you'll see plenty of banter on how they work.

www.battlecollege.com/

Acouple hours of research over a week or two will get you caught up with how your opponent's models work, and you shouldn't have any problems. If worse comes to worst, just ask to see their cards before the game begins.
