Reaper has a new 54mm sculpt by Werner Klocke up: Monique DuNoir. I'll probably end up picking it up, just because almost anything Klocke does ends up on my shelf one way or another. There are lots of pics here, but I'll crosslink a few to whet your appetite. Happy holidays to all!

Phyrixis, I don't know if I'd call Artemis "slutty". She's actually in a relatively dignified pose, and aside from the sheer size of the mammaries, she is one of the most graceful and realistic female sculpts I've seen in a while. Most cheesecake sculpts out there are garbage. The Rackham barbarian girls, for example, are some of the worst figs in their entire line.

Unfortunately, far too many unfairly equate nudity with promiscuity. That or use it as some soap box to stand on and proselytize about the immorality of such figures and the immorality of those that would purchase them. Even more absurd is the same railings against figures merely nude and not in some sort of pornographic pose designed to titillate (not that I necessarily find anything wrong with those either, they just aren't my cup of tea). Sigh. And here we were talking about a most excellent fully clothed and armor clad female miniature.

Back to Monique, she's badass. I really like the armor, and I like the pose, which has a nice sense of motion even though she's standing straight. If she was in 28mm I'd probably have to play a female Paladin or Knight in my next D&D game so I could use her.

Sigh. And here we were talking about a most excellent fully clothed and armor clad female miniature. This isn't directed at anyone in particular, but the issue comes up often enough, I feel the need to unleash the usual rant. It's a sad state of affairs when people have a bigger problem with nudity and sexuality, than they do with violence. So typical nowadays though. Here we are, immersed in a hobby full of imagery containing bloodshed, gore, and brutality, but it's the sight of a provocatively posed woman, or *gasp!* a naked body that gets people riled up. I'm scared of anyone who finds human sexuality or the unclothed human body offensive, but isn't bothered by rampant violence. And don't cop a plea that you "just want to protect the kids". Sexuality and the naked body are natural. Agressive violence is not. I know you and I have preached this sermon before Nyarly, but I figured it was due time for a refresher.

Phyrixis, I don't know if I'd call Artemis "slutty". I didn't call her slutty. I just said I thought all female fantasy models had to have their nipples and ass cheeks exposed. And lo, she does. She also happened to be visible to the right of this very thread as I read it. She's actually in a relatively dignified pose, and aside from the sheer size of the mammaries, she is one of the most graceful and realistic female sculpts I've seen in a while. I'm not really concerned with the quality of the sculpt, so much as the fact that the guy selling it took a close up of her naked ass cheeks, further emphasizing my previous comment. That or use it as some soap box to stand on and proselytize about the immorality of such figures and the immorality of those that would purchase them. I don't think it's immoral, I think it's sad and goofy. I also don't draw much of a line between "slutty" poses and "realistic" ones, because I don't care. None of it offends me, I just think it's sorta depressing. "I painted my 1" tall metal girlfriend!" Eek. At no point is it "realistic" to depict a naked women with weapons, the best you're going to get is "explicable." For example, perhaps a goddess antropomorphizes herself in such a fashion. But "realistic?" No. It seems like some huge minority of the female models I see, are naked, or at least very scantily clad. Any explanation for this that calls on "realism" is silly. The only real explanation is "horny paint nerds." After all, historically speaking, the nude fighters that spring to mind are the Picts, who were (like pretty much all warriors have ever been) male. I see no models of woad slathered crazy men, swinging their bits and pieces around and chucking javelins. And yet, somehow Rackham has managed to transmogrify that into mostly naked women with huge ass cheeks and nipples. I just don't buy the attempt to steer things from "painting little toy solders" to "I'm a dignified art critic, who simply appreciates the human form from an asthetic perspective." The bus just doesn't follow that route. Next stop after "next best thing to being a tough Space Marine is painting a tough Space Marine" is actually "next best thing to having a sexy Celt warrior girlfriend is painting sexy Celt warrior girlfriend." No stops at the art school. Sorry.

Since when have all nude, or mostly nude miniatures been sculpted bearing arms? Artemis is but that doesn't mean that they all are. There are plenty of "naked chick" sculpts in all genres. There are also plenty of scantily clad men, just not as many probably due to the fact that these figures sell mostly to males. In fact you can probably find plenty of "Barbarian" figurines that are male and are mosly nude. Also Breasts are not genitalia and comparing them to the penis is innacurate at best. Having said that I tend to agree with you on the chainmail bikini angle being both unrealistic and a little, I'll use your word, depressing.

Since when have all nude, or mostly nude miniatures been sculpted bearing arms? I don't know, since always? I have certainly seen a number of pinup girl style models, just being naked and sexy for no clear purpose... But the great majority that I see are armed in some fashion. The Rakham Kelt things, the one I linked, plus lots of others I don't know who made... I just see a lot of women with huge weapons, huge ass cheeks, huge nipples. There are also plenty of scantily clad men, just not as many probably due to the fact that these figures sell mostly to males. Well, for one, that's pretty much my point. For two, there may be some models of scantily clad men, but the percentage per model is vastly, vastly lower, and in no case are the men just sititng there being sexy. About 95% of models are male, and maybe 1% of those are the semi-nude barbarian types. About 5% of models are female, and about 75% of those are dressed in some fashion that wouldn't generally be considered legal in an American mall (for example). Also Breasts are not genitalia and comparing them to the penis is innacurate at best. I'm fairly aware of the differences, and I'm not comparing them. What I'm saying is that there is a realistic basis for Pict warriors with exposed genitals, while there's no realistic basis for nude women warriors. What I am saying is that Rackham appears to have taken the historical reality of berserk nude male warriors and just made them female and sexy, which is so tenuous a link as to be, as I said, embarassing.

I could have sworn that Celtos or Shadowforge or one of those did both exaggerated male and female nude barbarians. I remember seeing them a few years ago, but I don't see the figs I was thinking of on either of their sites. Male nudes seem fairly uncommon. I found some 15mm historicals, but that's about it. Hrm.
