Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I was just wondering what does a GW games designer does all day?

They have 6 months to crank out an army book/codex, what ever LotR has. So that means that they have 2 months each. Now they have a several guys over there, and how long does it take to write one?

To write an army book/codex all they have to do is take some articles out of white dwarf, and add them to the fluff. Most of the rules have already been written in prior books with only minor tweaks, and a couple of new units. And then there are the pics of the minis that they want to sell you. By their own admission, they don’t play test much. So what do they do?

They don’t look at their rules and try to correct mistakes. They don’t answer questions that people have, and issue clarifications. They don’t write White Dwarf articles anymore.

They do write Black Library books. Is that what they do all day?

Here's what I imagine:

10:00 AM Arrive from home, grabs a donut/coffee
12:00 PM Play a game of Warhammer
14:00 PM Stapler Incident
15:00 PM Bring out the Giant Spinner of Rules. It's like twister but without the yoga and with more stuff on the spinner, like "Make a new rule-term but never define it."
16:00 PM Play World of Warcraft (for ideas on how to get back at Blizzard for copying Generic White Elf Guy, Less-Generic Black Elf Guy, Generic Ork Guy, and Boring Imperial Hero). Any time past 16:30 is considered overtime.

There might be a lunch break in there somewhere. Maybe answering phones to take bits orders.

By reducing your IQ to cro magnon/ neanderthal levels.

By making sure youre pretty much as wrong as you can be, as often as you can.

By pandering to 9 year olds who cannot stand how THEY can lose an armor sav with their krootbersekermarines

By writing tactics articles in WD that basically reinforce said nine year olds.

With those key things in mind, youll be on the road to being lead designer and general overfiend in no time!

Highly unlikely. Cocaine is a stimulant, which should increase their output rate if anything.

Most likely pot, as they have slow work rate and a very tenuous grip on reality.

Clearly it's more than pot. I say they toke the bong and then drop some LSD, how else can one explain the hyper wonky rules writing? Plus they are clearly hallucinating about said work's quality...

I'm guessing the designers aren't specialists, so they're not free to write codex material all day.

This reminds me: does anyone know which drug is used in the anti-drug commercial where the guys sit on the couch all day? It's a funny one since it uses that "drugs are safer than (insert physical activity here)" argument sarcastically.

I can imagine devs doing that.

I was hoping somone would bring this up. This excuse is Lame!!  I work in a  technical/scientific field where we collect data for several months( which could be compared to playtesting in a way) then we are required to output written published publicly accessible results including graphics at a professional published level within a few weeks or a month at the most. A single codex is about a 1/10th the size of what we develop nearly weekly.   What we put out has to be accurate because people will be checking the results, within moments of receiving the report.

I think the biggest break down comes from people who are not used to deadlines, or the work atmosphere is so lax there that they budget in time for editing and fact checking but it is just tossed out the window. My point is, if my office mates and I kept up the type of output schedule the GW  rule writing team did  we would all be fired/sacked/what have you!

GW is probably an awsome place to work. It probably gaming all day with a little work thrown in around the edges. It is a secret dream job of all of ours...admit it. But GW needs to wake up and realize that with preforming in  a worldwide market place means you have to step up and preform or you are going to lose that market and end up selling your stuff on the street corner.

MHO of course...comments?

" They were'nt Nazi's Walter they were nihilists!", " They kept saying they beleive in nothing."

"...Nihilists?....", " Say what you will about National Socailism, at least it's an ethos."

I agree. I used to work for a magazine publishing company where we put out three 64-pp magazines each month with only 5 editorial staff plus freelance writers. A Codex is about 64-pp but GW only manage about four a year, containing mostly rehashed material from WD or previous edition releases.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I can!
You're wrong Smoke3, if that IS your real name...
The fact of the matter is that GW game designers have massive amounts of pressure and the deadlines are extremely tight. They're making a GAME here. They're not off in "the real world" doing anything "important" they're desiging a game. That is way more challenging than your pathetic "science" or what have you. You just try it some time and you'll see.
You'll all see!
Yeeessss...
