I have now heard of two 40k tournies this year where someone who went 3-0 did not get best overall and they were taken by people with only two wins. It seems to me that people who can play the crowd the best are going to grab top honors this year. I have played in several tournies now with all scoring based solely on battle points and to be honest I liked those the best. - Greenie

Depends on the total scoring battery and the percentages. I am perfectly happy with a scoring system which allows a player with 2 wins and a draw to outscore a player with 3 wins, IF the first player has significantly better sports/comp/painting together.
It?s all about the ratios.

Because if so, I think I know of at least one of the tourneys to which you're referring. The confusion over that tournament's scoring has already been cleared up and you're well aware of that. There was no Best Overall prize, just Best General. Sports, comp and painting were irrelevant. It was solely based on Battle Points. The reason why a player who went 2-0-1 won rather than a player who went 3-0-0 is because the tournament was using the RTT scoring system. Player A won big twice (gaining 25+ points each time) and lost small (gaining 5+ points). Player B won small all three times (gaining around 10 points each game). So Player A had the better Battle Points score.

Feel lucky. The only place I have to play tournaments in locally has comp (IE comp+sports) counting for more than battle points. I regularly go undefeated, but always place in the bottom 25% due to whiners.

I am a competitive tournament player and my primary goal is to win all my games. That said I like for my opponents to enjoy the games as well if possible. When you win big there is always that chance you will get dinged on the soft scores... that is why I am becoming an advocate for less of the final outcome to rely upon the soft scores.

In the most recent Tournament I ran, we used Empire Games Comp scoring system. It was a 1 time thing that ended up totalling up about 25% of your points, and it was completely impartial.
Sportsmanship we kept entirely seperate, and had a prize for Best Sportsman, that way sore losers couldn't screw you out of winning the tournament over all.
Over all, there where no complaints.

It's just been a bone of contention over on the local forums, which is damn annoying, because people are complaining about something that isn't happening. And we keep explaining it, yet they keep complaining.

it promotes the hobby as a whole

Glad to hear it went well. Can we get an after action report? I'm curious about how things went. How many players? What kind of armies? What were the final standings?

I believe it all depends upon the scope of the competition. You can have a Gladiator that relies entirely upon Battle Points and you can have RTTs
An RTT is a competition in all aspects of the hobby. Not only just pure wins. I don't believe that a player with a fully painted army should do better than a player that has the requred "three colors" if Battle Points are even.
At Sci-Fi we recently went to a new system for our RTT's. Essentially the maximum Battle points you can get is 18 (15 for the win plus 3 modifiers). We then had a sheet where you graded your opponent in two categories, Sportsmanship and Painting. Each had a scale of 1 - 8, and you are only allowed to give out one 8 throughout the course of the tournament in each category. Overall winner is determined by a simple addition of your total soft points and Battle Points. Overall the system worked rather well, and I haven't heard a single complaint.
So I believe that soft scores are important, at least to a RTT. Comp. shouldn't be anywhere in a game as diverse as 40k though.

It sucks when you get out scored by somebody who loses more games yet makes loads of noise and draws attention to themselves and generally acts the fool in an annoying way. Its called the "spirit of the game" which some places in the USA call Comp.
Once again have seperate catogories for sperate things. it comp, sportsmanshipm paining, total wins etc
