Mi.

As of the release of the new Harlequin models some of witch are priced at 17 dollars per model im done. I will continuie to play with what i have but im done buying GW.

If any of you know of a good alternative Sci-fi type game please let me know. Im very depressed about this as ive been playing since 1990. I just cannot justify 17 dollars when  i can pick up better looking models from confrontation for much less.

This does not make me happy and i posted it here in news and rumours since the models are not actually released yet. The prices i saw however were on GW's web page.

Um, where did you see $17 per model? Everything I have seen and the prices listed in the White Dwarf are about normal for something that size. Nothing I have seen show Harlequins to be that expensive though...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

People reach this limit at different times.

I'm not really buying much any more. I've got two 40K armies, two WFB armies and assorted forces for most of the Specialist games, so I don't have a burning need to acquire more miniatures than I have to paint.

Squad boxes were pricey at $32 when I started playing. Now they're up to $45. I can't justify that price. Metal models tend to be even worse.

I still pick up the odd character model or interesting unit, but I'm not buying new armies like I used to.

Rather than rushing out to look for another game, I'd take some time to consolidate, paint what you've already got (or take the time to add those extra layers of highlighting and detail) and play games.

You don't need to be always buying new stuff to enjoy the hobby.

Well, Starship Troopers from Mongoose Publishing was a very fun rules set. However, it is in limbo at this time. They are soon to be releasing SST:Evo, which the playtesters say is even better. Their miniatures are not as nice as GW's, but you can probably use your Space Marines as Cap Troopers without a lot of argument.

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

The latest White Dwarf has the harly box listed at $30, with the characters at $10 each and the harlies with fusion pistols or kisses at $12. So where is this info coming from?

Yep, and it seems 2 for $12 is what they are in the packs...

Mi.

Hmm ill have to double check my friends. I did have quite a bit of Heineken last night. I thought it was on GW's site. Hope you are right. I do love there models but at some point even though i make good money it just gets rediculous. Heck many systems have been around and they dont boost prices whenever they get a wild hair. Or have a new model that looks good so they feel the need to raise the price because if you want it you will pay. If im wrong im apologize ahead of time.

Thanks Asmodai i was also thinking of looking on ebay if indeed the prices went that high. I dont usually buy much new either. But with the eldar release i had to toss in the towel and buy it up.
I do hope i was umm a bit tipsy and seeing it wrong.

While not quite the same, Prince Yriel is $17 USD and Eldrad is $20 USD (!!!), with both being single 28mm figures on 25mm round bases... pretty ridiculously priced if you ask me. Classic/Collectors Harlies are running $8 USD apiece for "character models" while rank and file are $6 USD, which is a considerably closer to reasonable but still a bit high.

That said, I can't find the new Harlie sculpts anywhere on GW's sprawling, slow and non-intuitive site... on the other hand, I did discover that they at least have moved all the old Aspect Warriors (including the 3rd ed blisters) to the for those of you looking for those four extra aspect warriors that don't want to pay the premium of another box and don't want to wait for them to make the current boxes bitz orderable.

*cough*article I wrote about alternative sci-fi games*cough*

You might consider StrikeForce or Defiance.  Strike Force has some pretty different rules, but Defiance is closer to 40K.  The aforementioned No Limits is practically a clone.

Heineken? Eww.  Well, you've just forgone any sympathy you were going to get from me.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Stop being a little girl. Suck it up - 40k is fun (but nearly every other game out there is better written with better service).

I heard that Heineken was for people who believed the commercials.

On topic, GW is expensive, for sure.  Wargaming in general is really.   If you're interested in picking up a new game with a low entry cost, I would vote for Urban War.  I haven't actually played it, but I really like most of the minis, and as Syr said, the rules are free now!  I've perused the rules, and they look pretty straightforward.

If you want to stick with 40k, but don't want to pay GW prices (and who does, really?), eBay is often a viable alternative, and the Warstore is nice too.

Of course, if pre-painted is your thing, it seems like some people are getting excited about AT-43.

40k is fun, but obviously expensive.

But hell, what ISN'T expensive? My new dell is costing me $2300 (6 40k or warhammer armies of large size), so that I can play the new cool looking computer games coming out. My new camera set me back another $800 (two more possible armies), and my bloody badminton racket cost me $200. Don't even get me started about paintball.

The topic i'm trying to make is, 40k is expensive. To overcome these costs I limit my buying, and stop when I reach 1850pts for an army. When i've hit that, played quite a few games (or simply get over the army) I either sell it to finance a new army, or trade it for another army. So my 40k experience has cost me something like $500 all up for a year and half lately - not too bad or hard on the pocket.

PP is fun, but just as expensive. Don't kid yourself that you'll stay at 500pts for warmachine, it's unrealistic. You'll end up buying more, because you have to to stay competitive (for most armies out there). Not only that, games are getting bigger and bigger, forcing you again to buy more stuff.

Fantasy is good - fits in with 40k pricing wise. If you have to play 40k or fantasy, go with fantasy.

AT-43: Looks fantastic. If you're sick of the 40k hobby and price side, this looks like a good place to start a fresh gaming experience.

Whatever it is you start, remember to tellus about it. A lot of us are sstuck in our gaming ways, and other hobbyists are a great source of information regarding new games.

Chuck

Somewhere in south-central England.

Personally I'd rather drink Becks if I'm to drink lager.

AT-43 looks great (haven't played it) but it is just another SF skirmish game. For a completely different -- and cheap -- wargaming experience, bag yourself a copy of De Bellis Antiquitatis and a couple of 15mm armies. The lot will set you back only about £15-20. It's not new but it's definitely different to WH40K.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I've been playing 40k since I was 12 and have been buying all my models since then. It is a tremedously expensive hobby if you get deep into it. I've probably spent close to 10 thousand dollars on it and I'm not even 25 yet.

All hobbies are expensive though, thats what defines them as such. Otherwise their just another lowsey interest. Now I'm a Canuck and do believe that a box of 6 Harlies at $45 Can, troup leader, shadowseer and jester at $14 each and 2 kiss/fusion harlies at $16 is f*@king nuts. But this won't keep me from the hobby as its become a large part of me. I certainly won't buy any of those "things" they call sculpted. The jester looks like a bad joke and only the shadowseer looks anywhere near worth it IMHO.

We should take this as an object lesson. Many were suspicious of the brilliant rules the harlies got and now we know the naysayers were absolutely right. Perhaps thats the new marketing ploy, crappy base rules but the priciest models will be the best. Naw, thats just my paranoia talking... or is it?

Truth be told is that GW is a business out to make money, and when all is said and done they only reason they do what they do is to make a buck. Those in the upper echelons of GW aren't like most gamers. They may love the games as much as anyone, but at the end of the day they don't answer to us, but to their share holders. It doesn't make me any happier than anyone else who loves this hobby. I try to be realistic about it and take it with a grain of salt.

The hilarious thing to me is how expensive metals are getting when they are often less well made than plastics and certainly have way less options and bits. GW became a big, ugly corporate giant pretty long ago, probably even b4 I started gaming and we should all make our peace with that. We've all seen the signs and every day someone rants about it, but theres very little we can do about it. I'd try to buy my models at a discount on ebay or through an online store. Sure some suck, but some rock. I bought most of my Orks from Great Canadian Miniatures and am very happy with the service. If you can't afford to continue to buy and GW products thats too bad and I'm sorry for you. But if its just a few models that irk you and you have armies don't let such a stupid thing drive you away from a great hobby with great enthusiasts. Even if the parent company sucks like a stealer with tentacles.
