Warhammer 40k MMORPG from GW and THQ in the works and THQ is having Relic (Dawn of War anyone?) develop it.

This isnt totally true, relic isnt developing, Vigil is, which is still under the umbrella of THQ, doesnt have anything to do with Relic other than also being part of Thq.

Very cool news indeed, i hope they dont botch it.

MMORPG's are a really smart way to cash in on people's internet addictions. Blizzard is making millions and millions of dollars while kids waste years of their life infront of the computer gathering epic items, and it's only natural other companies want their share of the cake.

Well, as Ed Maule once famously said: "Therion's from Finland, where comp does not exist. Where he's from the trash we're forced to field for a tournament would lose to a 12 year old." - bigchris1313

I can't help but be cynical about this, having witnessed the suckiness of SWG and Anarchy online. When the talking heads of THQ and GW say stuff like "Innovative gameplay", what they really mean is "Treadmill in space, now with space clowns and killer fungus".

I do hope they pull of something worth playing, like say Inquistor in online form, but I'm betting it will be more like Space Marines camping Nob spawn on Armmegedon.

I honestly don't see how there could be an MMORPG for 40k -- the fluff just seems too restrictive for that.

In the Grim Darkness of the Far future, there is only war. Not RP.

I used to think the same thing, then I read the Eisnhorn/Ravenor series of books.  Those books changed my whole opinion of the 40K universe in regards to the depth of story.

Well I might just have to build a new machine in the next year or so. Hell this might just get me into the whole MMO scene.

It will be interesting to see how they will work the races out and how combat will work with both intensive Ranged aspects and close combat being factors.

I can't help but notice that not once did they mention it was going to be an RPG.

They always refer to it as a 40k MMO game. They weren't just being concise either as when the mentioned WAR they referred to it as a MMORPG.

Either way I am intrigued.

I wonder how they're going to enforce the whole 40k mentality on all their players. I mean, in the grim darkness of the far future, not only is there only war, everyone is also positively insane... and not politically correct.

Ooo... robotic flying babies. Criminals turned into living robots... Public servants BEING living robots.. Idiots in the bureacracy, the Inquisition and how can we forget 'the Space MarineZ in skirtz'... Not that I really mind any of it, but I can just imagine how politicans and mothers unions and whatever are going to go apesh*t about this if we ever see Abnett's vision in Eisenhorn translated into a MMO.

My 2 pence...

Between a rock and a hard place

Given the sheer number of annoying, whiney, power-gamer types we already have in 40K, making it into a MMORPG is just asking for trouble.

I doubt I will buy this game, just because I do not want to have to deal with a Spase Mareenz Librarian named RoXxOrzLOL. I honestly don't think I would be able to handle it.

The only way to make this game tbalanced and realistic as far as fluff goes would be to let everyone NOT a marine of some type control a squad (or mob or team or swarm), like in Republic Commando.  You can have your people that want to play as a marine, but BOY will they be outnumbered.

It would be one way to balance out the power difference.  If you play orks, you would control the Nob in the mob, and the boyz with you would act according to your orders, run along with you, etc. in a fashion similar to what World of Warcraft Hunter pets or Warlock demons do.

I think that this will be more along the lines of Halo or Tribes than a RPG.  Will be interesting, that's for sure.

A bizarre array of focusing mirrors and lenses turning my phrases into even more accurate clones of

SW Galaxies was great up until the stupid Jedi grind (version 10? 11?) and it's just gone under after the Combat "Upgrade." It still has the best resource/quality/crafting system out of any game I've played. The economy's more fun if everyone didn't have to grab EPIX LEWT all the time and making a brand name out of your high-quality stuff was awesome. Then again, it doesn't really matter since I doubt a 40K game will have any sort of crafting in it anyway.

If this game was combat-oriented and had "realistic" controls where you actually have to aim your weapon, much like an FPS or a game like Mount and Blade (awesome medieval combat in that one), I'd find it a lot more fun. One of the things that bored me about auto-targeted ranged weapons in WoW/SWG was how lame combat was.

Given the sheer number of annoying, whiney, power-gamer types we already have in 40K, making it into a MMORPG is just asking for trouble.

Yeah well we powergamey types dislike carebears on our server anyway. REROLL ON RP SERVERZ NUB LAWL. Seriously, any modern MMO will have PvE and PvP servers anyway...and the creepy RP servers for you D&D guys.

Well, if they made several playable races, they should all be balanced out as far as gameplay goes (uh, roughly). Yes, fluff says that Space Marines are all that and a bag of chips, but anyone who really expects GW to actually make Marines that powerful in an MMORPG is stupid. Fluff should NEVER dictate gameplay/balance, and GW has been relatively good about this.

If they followed standard class systems (which just about every MMORPG has, or at least the most successful ones) then a SM would simply be a tank, with small variations in latter upgrades for Chaplain/Librarian/whatever. I guess it all depends on how they break up the factions. Given their track record, I doubt they'd make the "evil" races playable, and you'd be limited to playing Imperial forces (read: LAME), just like their current plans for the 40k RPG. Maybe you'd have the occaisional Xenos ally or whatever, an Eldar Ranger or Kroot Warrior or a Demiurg or something, but I really doubt much beyond that.

"The convoluted wording of legalisms grew up around the necessity to hide from ourselves the violence we intend toward each other. Between depriving a man of one hour from his life and depriving him of his life there exists only a difference of degree. You have done violence to him, consumed his energy. Elaborate euphemisms may conceal your intent to kill, but behind any use of power over another the ultimate assumption remains: 'I feed on your energy.'" - Frank Herbert
