I got to thinking today about some of the most interesting and funnest armies I have played against. whether or not the armies were effective, they are the ones that make you stop, think, and say WTF?

Back in the pre-deamon hunters days I feilded an armored Company with Cypher and 11 Fallen Angels in a chimera, an Eversore assassin, and a mass of Kroot mercenaries.

One build my roomate used on me was a Catachan army with maxed-out snipers and sly Marbo with a Vindicare assassin, and tons of mortars.

What have you guys run into?

I'd thought about running the old IG mortar company mentioned here along time ago:
Command Squad 2x mortars 2x grenade launchers
platton command 2x mortars 2x grenade launchers
max squads w/ mortars and grenade launchers
support squads w/ mortars
3x bassies w/ inderect.

The idea behind the army was to have so many scattering templates you'd draw every game at the tournament. Luckily the realization that i have to many 40k armies (and the threats from my gamer group) caused me to say no.

One of the guys in my group is build a 1000 model gnoblar army for 2250 in fantasy using the gnoblar list from the WD. He's also thought about fielding a ripper heavy nid army using rippers for the troops and fast attack choices. 90 bases worth!

Another is building a necron warrior heavy in scarabs and wraiths.

A friend of mine has an entire "Firefighter" themed Empire army, complete with Steak Tank firetruck.  It's a great looking army (and appropriate, given that we play at a fire station).

I'm still partial to the Lustwing, even though it is now tainted with the broad label of "Daemonbomb".

At 1500 pts, 6 squads of 6 models each, half Terminators and half Daemonettes. Lots of random arrival times, random arrival locations, and good, Slaaneshi fun for all.

Mad props to that guy, I would love to see it once he gets it painted up.  I also wonder if it would be really impressively good with so many troops on the table, or apocolyptically bad as they are, in the end, all gnoblars ...

I think anyone who plays the gnoblar horde list or the zombie pirates list deserve credit for playing two of the coolest, most modeling intensive, least balanced, 'weakest' and yet totally awesome armies out there.  I wish I could say I was one of those people

I used to play an iron warriors army shortly after the index astartes article for it came out in white dwarf years ago that was entirely mounted.

Very out of the ordinary for a supposedly shooty army.

I would field 3 predators with autocannons and heavy bolters, smoke extra armor and a vindicator with smoke ex armor as my heavy support.

Then 4 or 5 rhinos, depending on point size of the game.  One rhino had my command squad with a tooled up 2 lightning claw lord and a powerfist and power weapon champion in it as well.  Then the other rhinos had 6 man squads with multiple meltaguns or flamers and a champ with a combi weapon and powerfist or power weapon.

Basically in every game i would run the tanks forward 12" with the preds and vindi in front and rhinos behind.

Then turn 2 the rhinos would move around the tanks guys would jump out shoot one thing then assault another then consolidate back into the rhino or sweep into another squad while the tanks shot at something else.

A fun dynamic unorthodox army to play.  It was also extremely small model-wise.  I had a brilliant game once where i beat foot-slogging orks when i was out numbered 4 to one; he had 165 models and i had 40.

Alas those days are gone.

You don't win a war by dying for your country, you make the other poor bastard die for his.

I tried out my all dropping Grey Knights army (well 2 minimum squads of Inq Storm troops) and got my head handed to me.

In 3rd edition I made an IG army that needed 8 books to play (in theory I could have made one that took 14 different books and WD articles to play).

My friend Ken did the nid ripper army and converted exodites.

An army I always wanted to try was the crazy witchhunters army consisting of 9 penitent engines, 20 repentia, 2 full squads of arcos an fill the rest with zealots. With all the crazy Holy Rage going on, it would be funny to see.
