i would defenetly want assult boats thus i will need defenetly use a mars for the carrior and will need at lest three luners or dictators to provide cover  cost so far: 45$

should I get more crusers or a battleship and what classes should I use

Start with the boxed set. You'll get 4 cruisers in it. If you can trade off the Chaos, you'll have your fleet mostly done right there.

Beyond those, I'd try one (blister) each of Swords, Cobras and a Dauntless.

That should almost fit in your budget and give you a fair amount of variety.

I'd wait to get a Battleship till you've built up the rest of your fleet a bit.

Assault boats are only available to the Emperor battleship in Imperial fleets, so keep that in mind when buying your carriers.

I'd say go for mainly cruisers, but Swords don't completely stink, and a Dauntless or two are good as well. Battleships are big expenditures, both in points and money, so I'd wait.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Honestly look on eBay and buy a whole fleet. Then you get your mioneys worth and dont need to worry about qwhat to take as the questions will ber answered for you. Thee are PLENTY of good deals out there, pick one.

Emperor class battleship - I loved it in the day, still like it now. solid choice.

2 Lunars - Basic workhorse of the fleet, I would take four, see below.

2 Mars - You only need one, take another Lunar instead.

2 Dictators - Good choice.

2 Tyrants - No take one Overlord and a Lunar. Tyrants are not much good and you need a) more Lunatrs and b) 60cm range batteries. You will be able to field the Overlord from the weapons batteries left over from the Emperor. ALWAYS check you have enough weapons batteries for your fleet plans, or its Gothics for you.

3 Falcons - Eldar Grav Tanks? I don't think so, Swords are good as a lance Dauntlesses.

Falchions are bad because:

1. They look naff. Ok that is not a valid reasdon and is subjective. But in all honesty I am biased against them and the accompanying light cruisers from the start.

2. A single torpedo is a joke, at least with Cobras you get two on a cheap platform. To fire you stupid poor firepower again you have to reload, what a wastwe of something that should be massing its batteries and locking on, or bracing. Take Swords instead.

3. A full squadron yields six torpedos, as much as a cruiser. Just take a cruiser, it costs as much. now if you want escort torpedoes it is to take eight or twelve. Mass six Cobras together and your opponent has to take notice, unless they are Eldar. Falchions are an expensive joke.

orlanth i already realised this, and to drop back to my list, after rereading the rules with dictators i'll end up needing to buy fighters/bombers for them to be much use to me (i already have to drop escorts for them for my emperor) so wouldent it be better to take tyrants insted of droping crusers for fighters/bombers, tyrants also replase the flight deks with 45 cm batterys  and dont worry about not haveing enough batterys one of the guys at the my local shop plays and i think i got a few bitz i could trade him for a few.

You can get counters for these from the boxed set - or print your own off from the Specialist Games website.
