I've got some medium to large (but not gigantic) FW models that are not codex models, but rather IA book models.  Stuff like the Trygon and that floating fellow who eats people.  What's the deal on usage of these types (and I guess stuff like the Mieotic spores as well), based on your experience, in:

1) Official GW events (tournament and other games)

2) Store events (ditto)

3) Friendly play

Regular play here in NH- nada. Only in Gladiator events (about once/year, when we had a really active league) and the occasional mega-battle. I do allow the more "normal" stuff, like minor variant dreads and tanks, in the tournies I run every three months on a case by case basis.

At Adepticon- all over the freakin' place, in every single event. The superheavies and flyers were restricted to the Gladiator.

For friendly play, I'm fine with all that stuff generally. If my opponent tells me beforehand, that's appreciated though. (Not that he'd have to ask permission, but with some of those things I'd need to metagame a bit to have a chance with my footslogging Orks!)
In the tournements I run, I don't allow them. That's pretty much standard over here. I've been thinking there's probably a market for a "Forgeworld allowed" tourney though...

I would imagine the move to $100+ rule books that can only be gotten at cons or from the UK really hurt people's willingness to allow FW stuff. A lot of their stuff is underpowered but what torunament organizers would allow rules that neither they nor most of their players have seen.

No different to anything in 40K - it all depends on the organiser of the event.

the spire of angels

by the rules printed by GW all FW models are legal to use without permission in all games with the following restrictions

1.individual tournament organizers have the option to allow or dis-allow thier use

2.superheavies and flyers or relegated to special games

on point 1 i really don't see the point other than them having to make judgement/rules calls as FW stuff isn't all powerful, overpowered or broken. it is just different and adds variety to the game, especially for vetran players.

on point 2 this only makes sense, especially if you have seen the flyer rules. it alows your opponant to come prepared to face them so he at least has a chance against you.

So, forgeworld is always allowed at tournaments, except a tournament organizer has the option to allow or disallow them? What if the Organizer does neither? Isn't that like saying that you can send emails, but your sysadmin has to either allow or not allow you to do so? i.e. you can't unless the sysadmin takes some action? Or more simply put, no, you can't use forgeworld unless the tourney organizer allows it?

Obviously, they are also not allowed in GTs at this point.

The old FW/IA stuff was mostly overpriced tanks, superheavies, and flyers, so it didn't come up much. Superheavies and flyers were easy to disallow as they used separate force org slots and/or whole new classes of rules.

Now that IA has branched out into cheaper, more cost-effective stuff, it's a tougher call. There are some gorgeous, interesting kits out there, some of which are not major divergences from existing unit choices. AC Chimera turrets, DA variant dreads, etc. But there are also a few units which are arguably crazy and broken. Such as meiotic spores (35pts buys you a S5 AP3 large template anywhere on the table- 1-3 per FA choice), and Giant Spawn (60pts gets you a monstrous creature, 1-3 per Elite slot).

I'd enjoy a game against a chaos army with 6-9 giant spawn (of which there were three at the regular non-Gladiator tourney Sunday at Adepticon) just slightly more than I'd enjoy sticking needles in my bathing suit area.

These actually weren't terribly useful; I'd rather have had my 105 pts for some Raveners or more Genestealers. :/

Giant Spawn (60pts gets you a monstrous creature, 1-3 per Elite slot).

Who doesn't love Chaos Spawn? They're RANDOM!!

There are some silly things in Forgeworld, though. Stuff like the Infernus shells for the (now IA-only, stupid GW) Griffon, which take an 85 pt model and let it win the game by itself.

Are biotitans classified as "superheavies?" How about something like a Trygon, which has biggie points but isn't really a true biotitan?

I'd always check, and not assume. If there are no guidelines onto what armies you can take, then FW would therefore be legal, but too many people out there still think that FW stuff is 'opponent's permission' when it isn't, so a tournament organiser might just think that no one will bring it because it hasn't been allowed when, in fact, FW stuff has to be specifically disallowed in order for it not to be used.

Another unfortunate thing is that most people think that FW stuff is stupidly overpowered. Anyone just has to read the rules for any of the Russ varients (except for nice BS4 Vanquishers) to see that in most cases they're just stupidly overpriced and underpowered. There are only a few things that stand out as overpowered, like the aforementioned Infernus Shells.

As for 'special games' for Super-Heavies and Flyers - you only have to meet the 2000 point requirement to take a Superheavy, although taking a 650 point tank at 2000 is akin to suicide, and Flyers are Heavy Support Slots - so no real restrictions there.
