Does anyone besides me realize that buying a Barbed Strangler for a Carnifex that also has Toxin Sacs costs 5 more points, but has no effect on the gun if the Carnifex were to be without Toxin Sacs?

In the Codex, the cost listed for a Barbed Strangler on a Carnifex is 20/25 (the latter being if the Carnifex also has Toxin Sacs). If the Carnifex did not have Toxin Sacs, giving it S9, then the Barbed Strangler would be S8 (a BS's S is equal to the weilder's -1 for the uninformed). However, since the Barbed Strangler has a maximum of S8, then giving the Carnifex a S10 would still keep the Strangler S8.

Sorry for the lengthy explanation. Thoughts?

Catch me if you can.

It's probably an extra premium tossed in to offset weapons that would benefit from the toxin sacs, i.e. Venom Cannons

Well, they do it by weapon. They don't automatically up the points by a set amount. Also, since the Venom Cannon get's the weilder's S +1, it wouldn't be affected either, and there's no extra cost for it.

Catch me if you can.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

GW can't write rules.

How is this news to anyone?

i always figured it....

GW doesn't want you having a cheap strength 10 shooty monster...

in lots of cases many opponents are safer in close combat with a carnifex then standing infront of it...giving them str 10 in close combat negates that a bit..

so you are paying premium for a super strong carnifex that can shoot..

or like HBMC said...GW cant write rules and i will use all my willpower to justify their screw ups for meaning something..

Or maybe they think a strength 8 assault weapon that uses the large template is more valuable in the hands of a S10 creature than in the hands of a S9, since it can still assault afterwards...

It's a typo, plain and simple. I have heard that other language versions of the codex only have a single points cost for the Barbed Strangler (and it is 25 points). Why this wasn't included in the Tyranid FAQ is anyone's guess.

All Nid weapons are assault weapons. Even the VC, which doesn't suffer the TS penalty like the BS does.

I bet money Yak is right. There was probably a change made at some point, and it didn't get reflected there.
