The Striking Scorpion Phoenix Lord has the ability to infiltrate with any squad he is with. Do you just declare that the squad he is with will be infiltrating before the game?

If so, can you just attach him to a squad of Harlequins? That way you can have a squad of infiltrating harlequins, and a Phoenix Lord that has Veil of Tears. That would be a nasty combination to show up 12-18 inches away at the beginning of the game.

Pg 21: "Note that Exarch powers can only ever affect Aspect Warriors and Autarchs in the same squad as the Exarch using them."

I am not sure how that quote applies to the question asked...

But if you look at the PL Discipline paragraph, you will see they can't join units of other aspect warriors. So the SSPL can't join those Harlis anyway.

How does it apply? Well, only in the most obvious possible way. o_O

To spell it out:

P1) Karandras can Infiltrate by virtue of Shadowstrike, which is an Exarch power.
P2) All Exarch powers can only affect Autarchs and Aspect Warriors in the Exarch's squad.
P3) Harlequins aren't Aspect Warriors (nor are they Autarchs!).
C) If Karandras joins a squad of Harlequins, they do not get to Infiltrate.

QED.

[Edit: Also, from P3, there is nothing to stop a Phoenix Lord from joining a unit of Harlies.]

that is pretty much what I thought. Oh well, I was hoping to have a giant squad of infiltrating harlequins with both stealth (from the Phoenix Lord) and Veil of Tears.

If that was possible that would have made them almost impossible to target.

Other than by answering it?

Correct, so Kharan can't join a DA or HB squad. However, he can join a Guardian/ Harley squad or any other squad that is not an Aspect.

Another point to be made is that independent characters can not join squads until they are on the board (unless this has been FAQ'ed without me knowing) so since you are going to have to follow proper deployment order, the quins will have to be placed on the board whenever elites are deployed and Karandras would deploy last-ish with the infiltrators. The way to get around all this (sort of) is to give him a retinue of striking scorpions who would then deploy at the same time as him and thus benefit from his abilities.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

Correct, AFAIK.

In order to deploy at the same time as him, they'd need to already have an Exarch with Shadowstrike (Infiltrate), so I don't see how this would allow them to "benefit from his abilities". Well, unless you mean his other abilities, but those are quite irrelevant to the issue, so I don't suppose you're referring to them.

tegeus-Cromis:
I do not have the codex in front of me, so correct me if I am mistaken, but can't the Phoenix Lords take a squad of their aspect warriors as a bodyguard/retinue? If that is the case, then they become a single unit (which is deployed at once and which the Phoenix Lord can't leave). This would make it so that the striking scorpions could make use of Karandras' shadowstrike ability.

Sadly no. They can only join a squad chosen as normal from the appropriate section of the FOC. There is no option for a retinue.

In that case, yah Karandras is showing up on his own unless there is an exarch with the same power on the board first.

Yes--a bit silly when you consider that all the other Aspects get full benefit from their PL's powers, but there it is.

Sorry, my bad. I did not realize Harlis were not also aspect warriors.
