Hey folks, I've been playing fantasy for the past couple years and decided to move to 40k as it looked like fun. I chose the Eldar as there list is relatively new and I liked the models. However I'm completely new to this game and could use some help, today I went down to my local game store and bought the following: A Farseer, Gaurdians box and a Dire Avengers box. So a couple of questions

1. Should I assemble the gaurdians as Storm Gaurdians or just regular with a brightlance?

2. Are Rangers any good as I like the models alot and would like to use them.

I was gonna go back out tomorrow and pick up a box of Striking Scorpians, a box of warp spiders, some rangers and a Falcon. Is there anything else I should get? Could someone show me a "generic" 1000 point list just so I can see how you did it?

Thanks

Are you saying that the new box set allows you to assemble them as Storm Guardians? That's great news for me if so (I have yet to buy a box). To answer your question: Storm Guardians are extremely limited in their usefulness. Defenders, on the other hand, can be a good way to squeeze in more AT weapons while at the same time adding to your anti-horde capability. Defenders all the way, but go with an EML, not a bright lance. (Still. one fun thing to do is to have Stormies with two flamers and a Destructor-equipped Warlock go in a Wave Serpent. I wouldn't exactly call it the best idea, though.)

Rangers can be useful. Wounding on a 4+ looks a lot better when you have Doom. If you like them, get them. You may not use them in every list, but I doubt you'll end up feeling like you wasted your money.

I'm sorry to say this, but you might want to hold out on those Striking Scorpions. Most players find that they're currently outclassed by Harlequins, Shining Spears, and Howling Banshees, in that order. They're not totally unworkable, though--Blackmoor took a squad to LVGT and did pretty well with them--but I would only do it if I really liked the models/fluff/3+ armour saves/whatever.

As for anything else you should consider getting, I'd say the first choice, if you want to field Guardians, is an Avatar. He makes all squads with a model within 12" of him Fearless, and that's pretty crucial to the effectiveness of Guardians.

Here's my 1500 pt list, which, though it doesn't exactly make me proud to say it, is probably quite "generic":

HQ (365 pts.)

* Avatar
* Eldrad Ulthran

Elites (258 pts.)

* Harlequins: 5 w/ kiss, 1 Shadowseer w/ kiss
* Fire Dragons: 6

Troops (295 pts.)

* Guardians: 10 w/ EML
* Guardians: 10 w/ EML
* Guardians: 10 w/ Scatter

Heavy Support (580 pts.)

* Falcon: Scatter, shuricannon, stones, star, vectored, holo
* Falcon: Scatter, shuricannon, stones, vectored, holo
* Wraithlord: BL, EML, 2 flamers

Total: 1498 pts.

The idea is that the Guardians, Avatar, Wraithlord and Eldrad form a difficult to shift firebase, while the two Falcons with their squads move to take out problem units (sometimes I hold the Harlequins back as counter-charge instead).
