Right, it's commonly accepted that RoW on a Farseer is a bad idea due to Perils, but after a bit of thought,  I'm having trouble understanding how exactly this is the case.

Eldar Codex, pg. 26: "A Farseer with runes of witnessing rolls 3D6 and discards the highest roll when taking a Psychic test. You must use the lowest two rolls."

BGB, pg. 52: "To represent the dangers of the Warp, if a Psyker rolls a 2 or 12 when taking the Leadership test to use a psychic power, he is attacked."

Okay, so you're more likely to get snake eyes, but isn't that balanced by being less likely to get a 12? Could someone explain?

Rolling 2d6, there are exactly 2 possible ways (out of 36) to get a Perils result: 1-1, 6-6. So, it'll happen ~5.5% of the time.

Rolling 3d6, drop highest, there are around 17 ways to get a Perils result: 1-1-1, 1-1-2, etc (and 6-6-6), out of 216 possible. It'll occur ~7.9% of the time. From a subjective perspective, you'll see it happen about 50% more often than on a Farseer without Runes.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

They should have kept Farseers at T4.

BAH!

It's okay. Eldrad is there for you. Every single battle. All across the universe. For every craftworld. At the same time.

Not to mention he can show up fighting on both sides of the same battle...

Wow Janth... that's the first time I've ever heard you come close to sounding bitter over something in 40K?

Unfortunately Eldrad, or Eldrad's ghost, or his reincarnation or his whatever he is can't fleet which means he can't run along with my 10 man Warlock bodyguard reaping destruction witchblade style across the battlefield.

The T4 is nice in close combat, your opponent will generally attack warlocks hoping to win combat easier.  Now there is no reason not to attack the Farseer.  And runes of witnessing go a long way to make sure you're going to get those fortunes off.

BAH!

oh well

I'm selling a large chunk of my Eldar army this weekend, all yous better check out the Marketplace forum for the details.  Full squads of Banshees, Fire Dragons, Warp Spiders, Dark Reapers, Guardians along with two all plastic non-forgeworld Wave Serpents and a D-Cannon/Vibro Cannon.

Then you haven't been reading the Chaos Rumors threads, have you? Alas for the Lustwing....

No, this is just something I find annoying: the trend towards these once-special characters being a necessary of EVERY list. DA have it bad, as do BA.

Janthkin, come on its not that bad. I haven't used Eldrad in at least 4 of my last 35 games, but I won those 4 games too.

EDIT: btw ROW is usually the only reason Eldrad takes a wound or 2, my farseer in the last couple of games hasn't taken any perils wounds, I recall having to ghosthelm once, but otherwise nothing like how often I'm taking those tests with Eldrad.
