So i've booked my ticket for the 2nd heat of the warhammer GT over here in sunny England- where I'll either be taking my cheesy woodelves or my highly entertaining night gobbo army- but as its my first actual GT, what should I expect? What are the things I should know that I might not actually know?

oh and anyone else going to the UK ones?

Take your 'cheesy' Wood Elves. You'll meet a couple of normal armies and a couple of maxed out power armies, and against some people you might struggle to play the full 6 turns before running out of game time. Take a powerful army that doesn't take a lot of time to play and has enough tools to deal with a wide variety of opponents. You'll then gain some experience, have some fun and qualify for the GT finals.

Well, as Ed Maule once famously said: "Therion's from Finland, where comp does not exist. Where he's from the trash we're forced to field for a tournament would lose to a 12 year old." - bigchris1313

Just thought i'd mention the difference in armies i could take.

The woodelves are a fairly cheesy list, but are a bit of a glass cannon, i'll either out move and beat my opponenets comfortably, or i'll have a bad day and get wiped out- would still have to sort out the exact list I'd want to take which i'll post over in the army forums for some comments.

The night gobbos on the otherhand have stolen my heart- I just played a game with 1500pts of the list and it resulted in both myself and my opponent in fits of laughter. the list is almost a "how many fanatics can i cram into 2000pts" but with a few more toys.
four characters, 5 units of 20 gobbos with bows and 3x fanatics, couple units each of squig herds and hoppers and finally a rather large (124) unit of gobbos with spears (and 3 fanatics)

between all the random movement and my playing in character "charge forward without really having a plan, then act all cowardly if anything looks vaguely dangerous" actually seems kind of effective, but i shall have to test it some more- especially against an opponenet who is more likely to be able to affect the fanatics

You are going to be playing in an unfamiliar environment against unfamiliar opponents under time constraints. Use an army and a list which you are comfortable and practiced with, and with which you can play quickly. Both so you don't waste a lot of time figuring out your moves and checking your own rules, and so that you are better prepared to resolve any "different" rules interpretations your opponent may have and to be able to judge better whether it's a legitimate difference of opinion or not.

That said, don't be too much of a rules stickler. Use good judgement and be prepared to fudge a little or play a little differently than you're used to to make sure you and your opponent have a smooth game.

Bring an army display tray. Not necessarily to show off your army (although it's good for that), but because it sucks to pack and unpack your models between every game. A display tray allows you to carry them from table to table unpacked, and greatly reduces the setup and cleanup time around your games.

Don't go expecting to win or place high. Go expecting to have some fun games and see some great looking armies. Focus your efforts on those two things and you won't be disappointed.
