Under the old Chaos codex, a number of 'ChaosWing' armies were possible - Lustwing, DustWing, RotWing etc, i.e. terminator-heavy armies aiming to be chaotic equivalents of DeathWing - although all required a couple of minimum Troops units, and none seemed too effective gamewise.

The new codex has certainly generated plenty of heated discussion(!), but I haven't seen 'ChaosWing' discussed at all - is it now easier or harder or just impossible to have terminator-heavy armies, and is it cheaper or dearer in points?

With the impending release of the plastic chaos termies, it's worth some consideration.

They're dead.

1) Daemons don't count as troops
2) Cult troopers don't come in Termie armor
3) Termies can't carry adequate firepower
4) Termies aren't fearless
5) Daemons aren't worth summoning anyway.

6) HQ units can't take terminator retinues

Aye, my Dustwing is toast, but luckily I never got very far with the model side of things.
With the new sexy chaos termies I continue to wonder at chaoswing possibilities though ...

Pink Nerfwing 1500

HQ
Sorcerer - MoS, terminator, lash, ikon = 145

Elites
10 Terminators - MoS, 2 reapers, 2 powerfists = 385
10 Terminators - MoS, 2 reapers, 2 powerfists = 385
10 Terminators - MoS, 2 reapers, 2 powerfists = 385

Troops
5 CSM - IoCU, plasma = 100
5 CSM - IoCU, plasma = 100

And there you are. I don't like lash on principle, but I think the Nerfwing needs all it can get. The CSM squads are as bare bones as you can go with the new book, and have plasma to do anything at all and ikon of teleport homer . I was going to have some demons for old times sake, but not worth it if they aren't even troops.

Those mass termi squads are still beefy and mean, and I5 means their power weapons butcher a lot before it hits them. T5 is also attractive, and 4+ inv is cool ... but at least with MoS the army is all pink, which is as far as fluff goes in the new book

I actually kinda like this list, wouldn't mind having the army if I didn't have to shell out the cash and paint it

On the plus side of the equation, termies are dirt cheap, can take combi weapons for cheap, have a small minimum size, and can always deep strike.

I'd get used to facing lots of 140pt quad-plasma or quad-melta termie squads.... I know that's my plan for my long simmering chaos army idea.

on the negative side, you have to take two CSM or cult squads (though at least one can be possessed by the now cheap and bland Great Daemon).

You also can't take a dedicated termie retinue, meaning a max of three squads.

Essentially it's dead as it was written, but a new one can have some interesting options.

Now I have my codex, I rather like the idea of the 30-termy army as suggested by Boss Salvage above, especially in a 1850 point list where you have points left over for useful stuff like:
- combi-meltas (or combi-plas) for the 8 non-reaper termies per squad - not too expensive and very nasty
- give the sorcerer wings, to get him into a better position for the termies to deep strike next to next turn
- change the troops to 10-member Cult squads (which ever cult suits your style, Thousans Sons looks tempting) and maybe give them a rhino and/or a icon-bearing champ - again to help the termy deepstriking
- maybe upgrade the termies to a cult, costs no more for a 10-man squad than a 3-man squad

That's a 51- model army, 30 of them termies, very hard. Not a huge amount of shooting once the combi-weapons have fired, unfortunately. Ideally there won't be many targets alive by then of course but that's easier said than done...

PS the new plastic chaos termies are great!
