So I've got a new project in the works for a Space Marine force where each member is allowed to paint their own heraldry onto their armor, similarly to Bretonnians. After a bit of consideration, however, I'm not sure how this will look on the field. I've got a view by now that it might come off as a little messy, and that the army needs some sort of unification, so I've come up with a few options and I wanted to know people's opinions on them. Option A) The marines are tied together with a chapter shoulder pad. A single one of the shoulder pads on each model will be painted as the chapter's coat of arms. Option B) The marines would at first be able to paint only very small amounts of their armor, but as they went up in rank they would be able to paint more and more. For example, a scout might only be able to have unique shoulder pads, but a tactical marine could have his shin guards painted too. This would continue all the way up to a force commander who could paint his entire armor. Below this heraldry, on the rest of their armor, the color scheme would be a very neutral gray. Option C) Only marines of veteran status or above would be able to adopt their own heraldry. Each veteran sergeant would have a unique design, and his squad would then wear variants on that same design. Option D) Just paint every marine differently and see how it turns out. At the moment I'm see-sawing between different options, so I'd welcome any input any of you might have.
