So I think it is safe to say that I am most like the rest of you guys in regards to the hobby aspect of this game. We start off with a couple models, flush out our armies with more, and when we have a great number of miniature projects (literally) to do this is when we start to get to work on finishing our models!

Well, I like many of you, do this but not only with my armies, but my terrain as well.  My goal of this thread is to try to keep me on track, with pictures posted of my progress with the goal of finishing 2-3 terrain pieces a month.

So without further adieu, here are 2 completed pieces and 2 large (2 foot x 2 foot) WIP pieces that are my goal for getting done. Also please criticism and critique them as I would like to improve my skills and learn some more!

Hi Alpharius,

I found them on the IG forum Boot Camp z4.invisionfree.com/Boot_Camp/index.php

BTW, you wouldn't happen to know if there's a tutorial for teaching a poster how to link images with a word, or will it just be the whole link/url that is clickable?

Why YES there is. Of course, it still isn't self explanatory.

The easiest way with the current software (IMO) is to paste a link into the text window using the normal insert link button. Once that link appears in with your text (complete with the blue color and underline ready for clicking on) you need to go up to the top of the text editor window and click on the "source" button.

This will display all the text in HTML. You then need to find your link spelled out in HTML. The address within the < brackets > will be the actual link. The address outside of the < > brackets is the "tag" that you can replace with any word(s) you want.

Once you click the "source" button back over into rich text you should see whatever word(s) you replaced the tag with now appear as your link.

Or you could just wait the three weeks until the new forum software is up and running and it will be easy like every other forum!

Awesome! Thank you very much Yakface   Hope all is well down there with the fires and all, I remember the 2004 Simi Valley one pretty well, as I lived in Valencia right on the northern edge of it at the time.

Update #2

Finally got some more time to take pictures of the 2 large (2' by 2') pieces of terrain that I have planned for my CoD table.  The first one is a Gothic building kit from Pegasus Hobbies.  I wasn't sure of the layout of the tample on the board so I glued it diagonally to mix up the row/column organization of the typical imperial layout.  It is going to be a ruined temple with a ruined aquila behind an altar, or on the floor. The front portion above the door is going to be collapsed with a large amount of rubble and I would like to construct platforms to take advantage of the 2nd floor's height.

2x2 3 piece:

2x2 3 piece with rubble pile

I would like to add 2-3 craters to the interior of the 2 seperate 1x1 pieces (without any type of texturing/basing unlike the 1x2 piece in front), but would it make this piece too busy?

Ruined Imperial Temple

This one is going to be a lot of fun.  Some more of the windows/framing needs to be removed and bullet holes dremeled out and I need to glue cardstock to the sides of the foamcore base to prevent corrosion from the propellant when it's primed.

I should have some more stuff done on either of these by weekend after next, at least that is my goal!

I really love the look of the buildings and fountains man. They add a nice gritty Stalingrad look.
One thing I have to ask as a player of a top heavy metal army is how well minis stand up in the buildings, particularly the ground level of the 2x3 you posted there. It looks like there might be so much rubble that it would be difficult to perch figures on it. Is that the case, or did you figure some clever trick to avoid that?

Looking good so far on your WIP's. What are you using for texture here? The rocks you are using look a bit too large and uniform. You might try getting some actual sand from something like the Home Depot or Lowes or any other DIY store for that matter. Try to find some sand that isn't all one size grains.

Hi Wehrkind,

Actually that was something that has been troubling me with this piece, I initially wanted to build a rubble pile where the levels of the building  were still usable.  After seeing the BG article on chaos terrain pieces I think I'm just going to convert it into one large ruined building/rubble pile. I have some left over city of death building sections I will incorporate into it to even out the large hill in the middle.

Hi grey death,

The texture is generally just regular white wall spackling.  for basing I use the GW modelling gravel, woodland scenics Talus (because of its lightweight), 40grit sand, cut up sprue bits, and a little aquarium rock.  The fountain is actually really interesting because it was all made from floral foam! I think I might try so different grit sand types although I wonder how it will combine with the talus which is awesome for basing terrain.

I have the last piece I posted almost done probably will have it up with pics in about 2 hours after im done painting it.

You might try using large flat sections of the walls on top of rubble piles to give you a playable surface. The roof and the subsequent floors below it could easily fall straight down. This is called a pancake collapse. You would just have to do a quick layout sketch of how you want to go about adding in all of the extra levels within the structure.

Man, now I want to make one with that effect...I love how this board bleeds creativity some days.

Great idea grey death!  I think I will have to try that out on that piece to make it fully usable

On another note it's time for a finished update on the last piece I posted.

Ruined Building w/ Crater

I made all of the damage/bullet holes with a couple of dremel bits and then used a round flap sander to get rid of the fuzzy plastic bits.

I thought it would help to include a couple of figures for scale purposes.  One thing I am noticing is that I should have made the crater with a shallower grade so that figures could be placed on its edges.

One thing that I have found helps a lot is putting some grit on sloping surfaces. Even a fine sand like on 100 sand paper keeps the minis from sliding, and so makes perching them at odd angles much easier.
Grey Death also beat me to the idea of having chunks of floors/ceilings making handy semi-horizontal landing pads for minis to stand on. 3-4 chunks at different angles would make a perfectly acceptable surface for troops while retaining that random, entropic "done been jacked!" look. The eye sees chaotic sizes and angles, the bases see "pretty flat sections bigger than I am" and everyone is happy

/casts lesser thread necromancy

Update #3 of sorts

So as you can probably guess, I've been busy since I first start this thread. Mainly school and my grandfather passing away in November has kept me from getting any sort of modelling done. This semester is different though in that my classes are a bit easier and I have a bit more time, focus, and motivation. I've also got a bit more done on my first squad of 89th Cadian which I should have posted by next week.

Anyways, for my 8x4 CoD table I finally completed the 2 out of 3 large terrain pieces I've made so far. A few posts up I had the large collapsed building ruin I was constructing. I took the advice fiddled with the building to make it appear like a pancake collapse that grey death had suggested earlier. I still have a little bit to paint on the manufactorum tower, but it is pretty much done.

With further adieu ( I hope the picture size is alright and they are not too bright)

As you probably guessed the models are for scale. Let me know if those pictures aren't adequate, it wasn't sunny here so I only had indoor lighting and flash to illuminate the subject so the colors rather saturated. They appear much more subdued in normal lighting.

I also purchased 2 urban roads that I cut into 2 foot sections and mounted to thin plywood, I have about 3 more of those to complete in addition to some other pieces I've goign to post as WIP's before the end of the week.

Lastly, if there's anything you might beleive I can improve upon please shoot. Criticism and comments always are welcome!

I should really post up my COD stuff some day. None of it's painted of course - nothing of mine is - but the COD buildings are one of if not my fav kit, and I've had so much fun putting them together.

Still got a spare City Box and a half to go too...

Looks pretty good! The pancaked building is probably my favorite.
I have been working on my first CoD kit, and am about 1/2 way through the thing. I will post the pics maybe next week and we can compare notes. There are a few things about the kit that irk me, but all in all, it is a massive and cool set, one that you are putting to good use!

I can't really tell from the pics - what gives the green color on the red building? Is the interior painted verdigris green? Or are there necron glowy panels in there?

It's just a heavily drybrushed dark angel's green with an additional heavy drybrush highlight of goblin green. It's sunny today so I will redo the pictures and see if I can get some that are not so saturated from the flash.

Thanks for the comments guys, table has a long way to go before it's complete though, there's about 4-6 more terrain pieces build that need to be finished (basing, filling, etc.)

I'm also wondering if you guys can see the battle damage on these 2 pieces (bullet holes etc.) I've been trying to figure out a way to make it stand out more.

Update #4

Just a little one, but it has about 5 more buildings without texturing/basing. I'm a little behind because I've been trying to finish my first squad of Cadians, plus about 8 or so tanks, plus the officer for my army.

Anyways, enjoy. There's also some pictures at the bottom of my group's friday night battle, which was a 1000 point 3 way between guard, eldar, and Ultramarines. We played the Firesweep mission from the CoD book.

Hi Wehrkind, yup it is what most of my wip terrain looks like. Thank you for the comment
Hi GD, Yep! I bought these and a bunch of the 99cent ones a long time ago, and decided to make use of these ones! I can't find the smaller ones, meaning I'll have to tear my room apart looking for em

This is a little bit of a 5th update. I've decided that I'm a bit done with the regular CoD building sets as I have quite a few done or that are WIP's. This first one is my first attempt at tackling some industrial terrain for my board. The basic idea is that it's a fuel depot/storage area, I'm having a bit of trouble making the storage tanks appear a little more gothic, in addition to being unsure about how the tops should go.

Hey Mike, glad to see you found your way here. Yeah my camera is crap...

@Moldovian, It's been probably 6-7 months in the works, it's not to a place where I'd like to say its finished, even though it appears that it is quite complete

Okay so here is a small update with 3 completed buildings. I modified my sand/earth fill painting technique by using a final highlight of skull white that brings out the small granulated bits more. I just noticed that I only have about 2 buildings with posters on them! I think I need to go catch up and plaster some up or I might find myself on a black ship to terra... egads!

Wow, 5 months since an update! I apologize for the threadnomancy, but thought it would be preferable to just creating a whole new thread to go fallow again. Anyways, I've been doing some terrain stuff, mainly in the form of 40k propaganda posters. I think when applied to terrain they really make it pop. the ones GW made were a honest, but half hearted attempt to add some flavor to the terrain we play with everyday. I think I might end up selling this piece, as well as the larger 2x1 foot buildings I made. While they look really great, trying to get a squad of sisters or grey knights to be stationary on them is another story, so I am trying to make the transition to flatter terrain. Anyways, here's the piece with weathering I applied via artists charcoals and conte crayons.

Anyways here it is with some of my guard for size and color variation.
