If you only get one vote, who do you pick?

Apocalypse Now?

Blackhawk Down?

Saving Private Ryan?

Other?

Well, I think it's between Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket. But every time I watch Apocalypse Now it seems to get better. Don't get me wrong--I love Full Metal Jacket, but I think Apocalypse Now has a more powerful effect on people.

Apocalypse Now.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Since you said Evah instead of Ever it would have to be Six String Samurai. If it were a serious discussion it would be a tie between Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai and the epitome of golden age Hollywood Casablanca.

Only now do I realize how much I prefer Pete Haines' "misprints" to Gav Thorpe's "brainfarts." :Abadabadoobaddon

5th God of Chaos! (Yea'rly!)

The Great State of Texas

Of those three-Blackhawk Down.  1) it really happened; 2) cinematogaphy; 3)

My  personal favorite otherwise would be Glory.  Here's a nice list of must sees

Others of note

Platoon

Run Silent Run Deep

Das Boot

Battleground

Pork Chop Hill

All Quiet on the Western Front

Glory

Gettysburg

Battle of Britain

In harm's Way

Midway/Tora Tora Tora

A Bridge Too Far

Longest Day

And who can forget the immortal twins MASH, and Catch-22.

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

What?  You are upset by that movie stereotyping cavemen like the Geico commercial?

Saving Private Ryan?

duh

don't forget Band of Brothers

I'll also add The Alamo to that list, if it counts.  It gets bonus points for Sam Houston and the Mexican General/King/Emperor/Pooface/whatever he was.

Maybe we could some some perimeters of what kind of war movie we are talking about so as to keep confusion to a minimum. Historical (Glory)? Pseudo-historical (Saving Private Ryan)? Pure fiction (Starship Troopers)? War movie is just to generic to get a bead on. Would we count The Good The Bad and The Ugly since the Civil War plays a major role in the film and there are a few battles? The Seven Samurai isn't between armies but someone listed it as a war movie and the point is debatable. We need some ground rules here.

I'm afraid I'm going to need you to define "war" for me then.

A war movie is not a movie with war in it. A war movie is a movie ABOUT war.

My top 3, in no particular order:
Lawrence of Arabia.
Full Metal Jacket.
Dr. Strangelove.

I can pretty much trace my want to join the military back to Saving Private Ryan. WW2 was an inspiring force in my world view overall and that movie just solidified it. Unfortunately for me that era died a long...long time ago.

Saving Private Ryan

CK

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

Somewhere in south-central England.

Saving Private Ryan is officially the greatest war movie ever, it was voted by Channel 4 viewers in the UK some time ago.

However, in the Dakka poll you also need to define "greatness" not just war.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Lawrence of Arabia. In my opinion technically the finest film ever made.

Though I find Battle of Britain particularly stirring, its the iconic colour.
