ok, so i got a SKS a while back and was wanting to do some conversion work on it, but i want to keep it legal.

i am wanting to make it accept detachable mags

put a folding stock on it

get a bipod

a laser sight

add a muzzel break / flash surporssor

and put a scope on it but still be able to use the iron sights, if that cant be achived, then ill go with just the scope

now the problem i am having is i want it to actualy be legal to own.... our fine legal system words thigns so mesed up that i can figure it out.

so if anyone out there has done this, any insight would be helpfull.

Where do you live? In particular, which state?

Now, don't take me as an expert on the subject, but with the expiration of the Assault Weapons Ban in 2004 (Congress finally did something right), most of those adjustments sound kosher. Removable magazines, folding stocks, and flash suppressors--those all would have been banned by the AWB, but are OK now, though certainly not in California. I'm no expert on IL law, but it's not CA, NY, or possibly NJ, so I don't expect anything special in place. I don't know about bipods or laser sights.

Oh *gak*. If you live in Cook County, you could be in trouble.

http://www.isra.org/legislation/cook_county_awb.shtml

Looks like they don't like guns there. Hmm. In particular, the detachable magazine on the SKS looks illegal. Well, here's to hoping that you don't live in Chicago or nearby.

EDIT: Nothing in this post should be construed as legal advice or an illusion thereof.

nope. i am located in bloomington... McLane county, or more commonly knows as McLame county.

i am one of those guys who likes his 2nd ammendment...  and dosent see a viable reason as to why full auto wepons are banned (in all of us), and dose not see a reason as to why consiel and carry permits are baned (in some states)

Apparently you also don't see a reason for spell check or grammar check.

You should be able to see the reason, that doesn't mean you have to agree with it, but you should be able to at least understand why fully automatic weapons might make some people uncomfortable seeing them being toted around like a box of chocolates. Mmmmm, chocolate. It doesn't bother me to much, though I'm against grenade launchers so take that as you will.

We aren't talking about guns, as I don't think anyone is going to have an M60 or 16 incher at home, for starters. It's also not that people are nervous around all firearms, though certainly some are, but that fully automatic weapons in civilian hands make some people nervous. Reason being that other firearms have other uses (all can kill oblivously), but fully automatic is pretty much only designed to offensively kill other people in a spectacular way. You don't hunt animals (other than man, the most dangerous animal) with full auto, carry one to Red Lobster hidden under you shirt, or blow knobs off doors.

As far as why at least putting a modicum of effort into basic spelling and such, especially in non important realms, I'll give you two reasons:

1) Makes people think you are a child, and no one is going to take an adolescent getting an erection over firearms very seriously. Young adolescents often are looking for things that they think prove their masculinity and it's natural. Like listening to N'sync.

2) You look stupid, so who wants to give a fully automatic weapon to an idiot. You create the argument against the weapons yourself.  Weapons are not a "what color should I paint my Ork?"debate, it is a serious debate (my orks would disagree) and if you do not come to play on a serious level no one will take you seriously.

I'll throw in a last one just for fun. If you are going to use Shakespeare as your sig, it might not hurt not to absolutely destroy the language he is known for.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

I'm not uncomfortable with firearms at all. I am not uncomfortable with open carry or concealed carry.  I've taught my wife how to shoot and when the daughter is old enough will teach her how to shoot. But I am uncomfortable with full autos. In my experience, except for older shooters, anyone pretending to have a a full auto, or even a machine pistol full auto wannabee are exactly the type of people who SHOULDN'T be allowed to have firearms.

Its like the Presidential election. Anyone who wants the job shouldn't be allowed to run because you'd have to be insane.

Alright folks, let's be civil here.  The easiest way to make the other guy look worse is to not respond to insults.

Envy89, Ahtman has a point about your punctuation and grammar (although it could have been voiced in a more polite manner).  I'm pretty sure he's German (am I right, Ahtman?), and if so, he sets a good example by writing as well as anyone in his second language.  (I'm also assuming you're a guy, Ahtman).

Not meaning disrespect but I doubt the German part (at least in Germany). IIRC but German gunlaws would make a New Yorker blanch and an SKS would be strictly fashion faux pas. Besides if you're German you just have to have an HK. Why by POS when you can get sublime perfection straight from the local factory? If you're German and in the US then welcome. Illinois is a good place for you. Lots of Polish and central European generations there with excellent sausages. mmm...sausage...

As to the query. Why are you putting a laser scope and a scope on an SKS? Their inaccuracy would make a billy goat puke. SKS are plinkers and are not up to snuff vs. other rifles for accuracy. At worst get a cheap scope - thats all you need and thats all an SKS is capable of. You?ll be happier leaving it bare with maybe a tripod. A search of the intraweb for Illinois and that county's law should be a good first step-as long as you get a real rifle hah hah hah.

Its not a need, its a right.  Its not each to his need here, rights are inalienable and framed into the US Constitution to insure they remain absolute and legal.  My rights are not gifted to me by the government.

I agree with ahtman about the reasons why fully automatic weapons shouldnt be legal. There is no use for them besides the gross display of power used to kill humans or anything else in its range and LOS.

Pointless weapons good for nothing other than military value.

as to the SKS legality...SKS are fun guns, but utter crap. Nice and cheap, especially the chinese versions, but ultimately a waste in dough if you want a rifle that has any value other than "not good enough for chinese peoples republic".

The mods look nifty though, and a kitted out SKS can look quite impressive, but thats as far as that goes, it just LOOKS impressive.

And I couldnt agree more with James on the issues of rights. they are not allowing us to have them. Its a right to bear arms that cannot be made illegal, unless we give up those rights. Certain issues do apply ofcourse (fully auto guns for example) but this right is in place for the self defense of the people of this country, not just against exterior threats, but against interior ones as well. The government is in place under sufferance of the populace, until a time is deemed where that government is no longer serving the needs of the populace.

Hence why the federal government is so damned nervous about state militia groups.

Ah but hellfury, using that wording.  The government could restrict us down to muzzle loaders.... you know the "BANG, ok please stay still for 5 mins" guns.

The reason why I believe that some people should be able to have access to full auto weapons is this.

the people who want full auto weapons for intended criminal use.... they just go out, buy an AK-47, 20 bucks in parts, and convert it to full auto.  They don’t care about the law..

It actuality this puts the good citizens at an extreme disadvantage when it comes to defense.

HOWEVER I do believe that once you have been convicted of a violent crime (I’m talking about murder, rape, armed robbery ECT ECT hear... not things like speeding and shoplifting) that its BOTH, A. a much tougher prison sentence, and B no more firearms for you.

As for

“The government is in place under sufferance of the populace, until a time is deemed where that government is no longer serving the needs of the populace.”

That is very true; it is the <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal">responsibility[/b] of the people to overthrow the government should it become too tyrannical.  And NO. I’m not saying our current government needs to be overthrown.

I also do believe that the state's should actually maintain a STATE militia.

Now that all that’s out of the way.  I did not word my original post right, the list of things was meant to be more of a, if I put a laser sight on it, no need for scope and vice versa.

And yes I know the SKS is not very accurate.  This is more of a project of mine.  That was bought with the primary use of just going to the range.

I have other firearms that I take when I wish for long range accuracy.  And I have my hunting guns as well.

1) The problem with your argument, though, is that then any weapon is just fine to own. Want a flak cannon in your back yard? Want a panzerfaust? At what point does it become not just impractical, but dangerous? As far as uses, if you can't kill another person with a semi auto to begin with, Full auto isn't going to help much.

2) You know how many crimes are committed with full auto weapons? If this is really your fear then please don't go outside because the odds of getting struck by lightning is far far greater and a more realistic concern. Yet I'm willing to bet that does not bother you, but come on, it is lightning and it is stingy and painful.

3) Full auto weapons are legal, they are just very expensive (for several reasons). You also probably put a bright red flag to agencies to keep an eye on you. Most gun owners never own a weapon of that kind of destructive power.

*Please explain in what  neighborhood you lived in where you're trading fire with the local gangstas? You've been watching too many movies.

*You realized the first automatic gun laws were put in place to stop gangsters right? They are legal you just need a license.

*Its interesting in all the time I lived in LA I never felt the need for a full auto. The people I knew couldn't hit the broad side of a car with one. It was the ones with the shotguns or pistols that were much more dangerous.

Again, if you want a plinker and have an SKS then they are excellent for that. I just don't see the efficacy of a laser site or any sort of above mediocre scope. They are plinkers and if you treat it as such you'll have fun. Otherwise you're just trying to show off, which won't impress anyone who can actually shoot.

So back to the original topic:

Check the laws in your state specifically, forget anything from a miniatures thread.

i am wanting to make it accept detachable mags

-cool (I must be getting old, I thought they had detachable clips. Its been awhile since I shot one-did this change with the laws).

put a folding stock on it

-that’s meh. I always liked a fixed stock with a nice recoil pad. If you’re shooting the SKS more than some, it’ll start to wear on you.

get a bipod

-I’m liking this. It will help your accuracy and there’s nothing wrong with it.

a laser sight

-No I would not do this. Its just not worth it for a rifle of this type due to the minimal range and accuracy.

add a muzzel break / flash surporssor

-If you want to, ok, but its no thing for me.

I did not pay attention to all of the replies, but modifying any firearm contact a local gunsmith. They can tell you what can be done & what is legal in your state. Also a federal class 3 firearm licenced individual can own a full automatic weapon legally. Another fact, since the law was passed banning full auto weapons from the average citizen,(passed in the 1930's I think) there has not been a crime commited with a registered full auto weapon to date.

No. Never with a REGISTERED Full-auto gun.

Unless you are in the Military/Police, I think it's crazy to even want one.

BUT.... I am a softie, brought up in Australia. So guns are not really a part of our Society as a whole. You could drive around our Capital cities all day and not find a Gun-smith! It's not that I do not like guns, I play 40k and all, but the idea of people walking around the streets with a Glock under thier shirt, or an Uzi in the boot of thier car is terrifying.

So if I lived in the US of A, I would HAVE to have my own firearm to feel safe?

I would like to apologise if I offend, I am just wondering.

Actually, here in Aus, we use a thing called a "Cane Knife" or Machete.

High powered Rifles are nice, but there is nothing quite like the warmth of Arterial spray to start your Day.

Waiting in a tree, 500Yards away from a herbivore(downwind) while it takes a refreshing drink of cool creekwater, and then blowing its brains out with a Laser-Sighted, Scope mounted, Tripod .50 Cal, is not exactly my idea of a good time.....

Feeling the rush of H2H combat with a Grizzly, with just my Swiss Army Knife(what war were they in last anyway? How good are the knives then?) and a gut full of Bundaberg-Rum. That's the Rush I need.....
