Greetings all,

I have decided to start on an entirely Mk6 Space Marine army that resembles the RT/2nd Edition armies of well, 1st and 2nd Edition. This amuses me as I started playing in 3rd Edition, but have always liked the look of the Mk6 Space Marines, but felt they needed a bit of an update from the smaller, metal minis.

I don't have an army list planned yet but I hope to make one eventually. Either that, or I'll just build the army until it has everything I want in it or my fingers hurt so much I can't convert any more torsos, whichever comes first.

Here is what I've come up with so far in terms of what I have, well most of it anyway.

Heads and Shoulder Pads:

33 Pads and 40 heads.

Torsos:
Gone from this: to this:

Do that 19 times and you get this:

Add some greenstuff and this happens:

Legs

39 of them.

I also have 11 bionic heads, 4 Eagle Backpacks, various guns and other equipment.

I hope to get some models assembled after the greenstuff on the torsos dry.

Thanks for watching/reading.

You sir, are not well. Very not well. I love it.

Will you get your hands on the old shark missile launchers too?

I don't know if I'll get the originals, but I'll try and convert something up from the current plastics and see what happens.

I tried my hand at gsing a mk6 torso and this is what I came up with. I think I'll try and find some more Space Wolves torsos.

Any chance of getting hold of some old Rogue Trader SM plastics? Save you a lot of bother, if not cash. Though only unopened space marines fetch a high price, bits sprues etc are quite cheap.

Will you be using the old Corvus missile launchers?

@Orlanth: The reason I'm doing this log is to update the RT marines. If I wanted an army of them, I'd get one but I want to make my own and make them more original. I want to get some of the bitz though, especially backpacks.

As for the missile launcher, I'll try and convert one up but not use the old one as I want to make it a 'modern' version of the old one.

I like the idea but think its a hard way of going about it.

I've also got a entire Mk6 marine army, painted as Crimson Fists to match the old rulebook. It makes the army look different but mine are all the old metal models, including the attack bikes and rhino crew. The look good but its an easier way to go about it.

I'm about half way done converting them so it's not that bad, especially since I can convert the torsos pretty quick when I get them now that I've gotten the hang of doing it. I'm going to try and make some more torsos myself so that I don't need to find as many torsos and turn the converted torsos squad into the veterans or something like that. I may get some of the metal models too to round out some stuff if I happen to need more than 40 models, which I probably will. I also want to get some of the Dark Angels robed models so that I don't actually need to make torsos for them as they'll be covered up. It's an easy way out.

Looking good... this is something I have considered doing many a time so I am glad someone is doing it! Any thoughts on vehicles yet? What chapter are you going to make them?

No vehicles, they are the devil (to paint in my scheme). As for a chapter, I was thinking of continuing with the Sons of Guilliman, that or something else that I haven't thought of yet.

I've been thinking of what chapter to paint them. If I don't do SoG, I was thinking of either Hawk Lords, Space Sharks, or a completely different DIY Chapter.

Any thoughts?

Is Landsharks an option?

I have to admit, as much as I loathed the beaky helms when I started, they really have grown on me, so much that I am sad that I don't have more in my bits box for my boys. Some of the older, more medieval looking helms are cool too, in other news.
I kind of like the paint too, though a quartered scheme is a bear I am not willing to tackle.

This is an awesome idea ^.^ I salute you sir

I always try to add as many Mk 6 Armoured Marines in my squads as possible.

I think if you are not going to paint them as SoG then choose a classic Rogue Trader era chapter, like you suggested with Space Sharks

There are some decent ways of converting the current Bolters to resemble the Mk 1 variant, I think there are some on Dakka but you will have to hunt

Good luck! Look forward to more progress

Pardon my noobness, but are the Mark 1 bolters those with the magazine in front of the off hand grip (i.e. right by the muzzle)?

If it is the version after that, where the bolter is just really small, sort of like the SoB bolters, I have a mess of them lying around that I would be willing to trade. I prefer the larger, bulkier looking ones.

Good work so far SoG. When I played waaaaay back in '88, you got a box of the old marines(50 or 100-I honestly can't remember)

with the beaky heads and old-school bolters and such. Sigh... the cheap days are gone.....

Here's a test mini for the Space Sharks. I'm not too happy with it though, the armour I like but everything else is kinda 'meh' to me.

I'm going to redo the metal bits and the joints and see if I like it better after that. If not, I'm going to swich chapters.

Grey is one of those armor colors that takes the extra details and right color palette to make work. You might check out my Grey Death Legion thread for some ideas in there. You also need to leave a good portion of black lining in the recesses to help distinguish the armor plates.

BTW, good job with the green stuff on the armour. Don't give up! I think the perserverance will pay off. They look great, IMO.

I've actually decided to do a different scheme all together. I'm now going to do the Marines Malevolent.

Here's a WIP shot of the new test scheme, so far only part of the yellow has been painted.

It also shows that the old backpacks could work for the army as they don't look too small, I think anyway.

Hey I actually stumbled in here because of this thread. I am a huge fan of the Mk6 Corvus armour, probably because I did in fact start with Rogue Trader, and haven't played since 2nd edition. I'm bringing my own armies out of retirement, and as I already have a fair number of original Mk6 Dark Angels (Black armor not green) I've decided to make a DA "Fallen" renegade army....my plan is to only use equipment and weapons available at the time of the horus heresy.....just a thought of what you might do with your mk6 guys. I'm refitting with Auto Cannons etc and other weapons from rogue trader days that still have rules.......and converting others from weapons that no longer exist....(I have some marines with shuriken catapults etc) I still have some old sprues from the infamous "Imperial Space Marine" plastic box for mk6 marines.

The Fallen DA are a perfect reason for doing a all Mk5 (only for special chars) and Mk6 army, and for pulling out other rogue trader models out, I'll probably use the chaos codex for them because I do wish to use the auto cannon minis I have, but just do not plan to use any "chaos" marks powers etc......cypher will of course be included......just a thought.....I only wish I had some variant A or B terminators to go along with it. (sold my variant A's long long ago like an idiot)

Truthfully I'd like to make them Fallen Loyalist...and use the marine codex....if only I could buy Auto cannons at the same price as Missle launchers (would have to be a player agreement) I've even considered adding some pre deathwing Terminators and putting Reaper Auto Cannons on instead of assault...but I figure the more I muck with the rules The more I'll get flak from anal retentive players. My main reason for not wanting to go Chaos is I wish to keep my Librarians, medics, and chaplins. I just won't give up my autos.....it took to long to convert them way back when.

One other thought, one time I saw special rules for using Rogue Trader style Dreadnaughts, seems like it was published in a suppliment, lower stats since it recieves a smaller size etc......anyone know where I might find that?

Always been a fan of your work.

The fact that you convert entire armies to older marks of armor is awe-inspiring. I'll be following this thread closely.

Are you planning to convert Mk. 6-style bolters as well? I saw a tutorial on B&C, I think, showing how to do them.

I thought that one of the basic plastic torsos you get with the marine squad box set was a Mk6 torso - the one with the round net device on the chest. I swear I had seen something like that on marines that came out right after the RT book but before 2nd edition...

In any case, these look great and I applaud your efforts and the love of the old Corvus armor (I think that was the name of it).
