So after about a year away from 40k, I recently got back into it and picked up the new Chaos Codex. I had an Iron Warriors and Deathguard army and was building up a LatD Word Bearers army. Well, I don't really know what to do with them now, and took the LatD and started a gunline IG army.

I've been thinking of a gunline IG army for years, so I'm content with that, but I'd like something more mobile to change it up now and then. This is a longer term project, just picking up a unit here or there to build it up, but I don't know what army to go for. I don't want to do another Chaos army at this time and I have a Marine army, so I'd like to avoid that too.

So basically what's left? Eldar or mech Tau? I have no idea what mech Tau is like aside from lots of vehicles. And I've never known too much about Eldar, and with their new Codex, I have no idea what they're like.

So any suggestions?

You could always try Dark Eldar - very fast but fragile, or Necrons - complete opposite - slow but extremely tough. They both have great firepower, and some units which can hold their own in hand to hand. Just a thought.

Necrons aren't slow. Veil, DSing 'lith, Destroyers and Heavy Destroyers, Scarabs, Wraiths (if anyone used them). . . . Really, they can be one of the most mobile forces in 40k.

Well, Phil's got the Orks, and I don't want to take his thunder.

As to the Necron suggestion, I've never really liked them, and painting more metal after and Iron Warriors army just doesn't seem fun to me. Dark Eldar would be interesting, but the models are kinda fugly and a pain in the butt to get a hold of. What about normal Eldar? Is it possible to do a jetbike list with them still?

More possible than it used to be, really. Guardian Jetbikes are always Troops now, and got the points cut they deserved, and Shining Spears are ridiculously better than they used to be. The only bad development is that Crystal Targetting Matrix is no more, so Vypers can't avoid getting shot.

what about tyranids?

If you want to do an eldar jetbike army you might want to wait.. there's been pics posted of a new one that they're working on, no idea when it might be out though.

Bugs may be an interesting choice, didn't really think of them. I have the Tyranid Codex so I'll have to look through it to check out what I can do. And I saw the pics of the new jetbike, but I never really had a problem with the current one so that's no big deal.

A lot of people seem to put down necrons. i have always felt that they were tough. I just think people need to play them right. Dont forget who won the 'Ard boy competition.

My traditional armies have been Guard as well for a while, with the other primary army being infantry-focused Chaos (there once was a Legion named Alpha . . .)

Anyway, I recently started on Dark Eldar for a change of pace and so far they have been a blast, with a completely different game style from Guard/CSM. Although some of the models are subpar, I think there are some ways around this: 1) using conversions/substitutions where available (Dark Elf range mostly, especially for Wyches) and 2) not using the extra spikes on the Warrior sprues. Although it doesn't fix the helmets, it helps.

After seeing the Therians, I'd actually been debating combining Dark Eldar and Necron plastic kits to make a GW-equivalent (using Necron rules). Also, there's nothing saying 'crons have to be brushed aluminum in color...

Dark Eldar could be fun: run a 2+portal list and just vivisect your enemy. Might want to shave off the extra spikes (TM) though.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil
