Epic (6mm 40k for massive battles) is a fun idea and a fun game but a real pain to paint.

So would people be interested in it as a prepainted game, hopefully without random packs?

GW could make a standard IG, SM, Chaos and Ork box for starters with a few booster packs of rare units. Include the rules and cardboard terrain with the boxes and you'd have the most accessible GW game in years.

Not that we have a say in these things but what would people think?

The problem with the argument though is that you can paint an epic army in a weekend. I like everything else though.

I don't think I could paint an epic army in a weekend with any satisfaction, though.

At least not the fiddly bits.

Are we talking collectible (like Mechwarrior) or open box (like AT-43)?

If collectible, you'd have to balance things right to get me interested.

Commons = stuff you need a lot of.

Rares = characters and stuff you only need one of.

Not well though. The last time GW made a serious try at epic in the late 90s they had these IG tanks with intricate cameo schemes and with all the stoage painted and just asked painters for a level of detail beyond anyone's ability or desire.

but prepaints these days can come close to that and a large scale game that does not take a gym floor to play on would be fun.

Wait, you mean they let the 'Eavy Metal team paint the Epic miniatures, too?!? :S

I don't really see what the big deal is. They're the same as any other miniature. You just treat each tank the same way you treat an infantry model in 40K, and treat each Titan as you would a 40K dreadnought. Epic infantry realy varies by race (my space marines were almost entirely spray-painted).

But, as far as your actual question, if the rules were more or less the same as they are now, and it meant increased miniature support, I'd consider it.

I think it's a brilliant idea. I would love to play Epic again, with ease. I would like to paint my own Titans though.

So...40k Micro armor, essentially?

If you look at 1/144th scale collectible die-cast military toys (Dragon being a good example), you can achieve a pretty high level of detail both in terms of sculpts and paint jobs. Now, that's closer to 12mm than 6mm, but 40k stuff is so oversized anyway that it probably could be done, at least for vehicles and the like. troop stands would be another story. Otherwise, they could just do it in 1/144/10-12mm and call it a day. Sure, it wouldn't be especially backwards compatible with the old stuff (though I'm sure the titans would still work fine), but Battletech/Mechwarrior survived having two games (CMG prepainted and 'classic') in two scales and seems to be healthy enough...

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I like that idea even better, and so would GW.

I don't really care for this idea, but I really enjoy painting small fiddly scales. I've been painting a lot of 15mm for the last couple years, and I think one of the main reasons I would enjoy a game like Epic is the chance to try my hand at 6mm. Smaller scales aren't really any harder than bigger scales like 25mm or 28mm, (I actually think 15mm is easier) you just have to approach the way you paint in a different way. I think 6mm Epic infantry could be done up nicely rather quickly and easily using techniques like washing and dipping, and you can really play around with the tanks and Titans.

I'd gobble that up in a heartbeat.

Being able to play such a large scale game like that would be great.

Being prepainted and playable out of the box would have me giddy with enjoyment.

Darn now I'm getting psyked for prepainted epic... maybe if enough people talk about this 'rumor' it will get back to GW?

I see a box of 10 lemans, 10 bassilisks, 10 chimeras and 20 stands of infantry for $100.

Plus of course ridiculously expensive forgeworld stuff for the collector modeler.

Hey KK. Good thread. But I would buy...

Space Marines Box set.

1 Warlord Titan
2 Reavers
4 Warhounds
15 Land Raiders
10 Rhinos
100 Infantry.

Unfortunately, the Dreadnoughts come in a separate pack with Thunderhawk Transports.

Sigh. Back to reality again...........

Maybe it will be like the old epic boxes where for $15 you got...

HALF THE TERMINATORS YOU NEEDED FOR ONE UNIT!

Ah well. If it was up to me it would:

Space Marine Company
10 rhinos
100 marines (mix of assualt, dev and tac)
3 land speeders
3 bike squads
3 preds
3 whirlwinds
3 vindicators

Titans would get their own boxes, painted and unpainted.

Such a wonderful alternate earth...

Wasn't it a quarter of the terminators you needed? I know I had to trade with some guy online to even get enough models for one terminator detachment of four stands, and I was spending pretty freely on Epic back in the mid-nineties.

I'd do it. I've put so much time and money into 40k that it precludes me from getting into any other miniatures game. I mean, I've been playing for 15 years and I'm finally nearing completion of my IG army - it's apocalypse size, but still. I just don't know how some of you people paint so well so fast. The one game of Epic I played was so much fun, but I just don't want to paint a million little guys. I don't have the time that I used to, but I have way more money.

Decent minis + halfway decent price = at least one super-apocalypse size army sold. I mean, I have enough 40k minis for apocalypse, so it would have to be more than that, right?

As long as pre-painted would also mean a singnificantly lower price I'd go for the stuff even if it was collectable with commons and rares and such!

Just a softer type of plastic (like used for 1/75 army men for instance) would probably work.

For me it wouldn't need to be pre-painted but it wouldn't be a turn of either.
