While the old Gorkamorka deff kopta model has a charm all it's own, it doesn't really do it for me. However the rules have incredible potential, so of course Warboss Deezull has to have some around. And besides, it doesn't get much orkier than rokkits tied to jetbikes, with an ork pretending to control the whole flying heap. So I had a go at various ideas.

I'm a total gearhead, and choppers have always had a special place in my heart (the special place addicted to going fast and making lots of noise, to be more specific). So I figured I'd task the Mek to a chopper style jetbike. Scrounging in my bits box found the perfect gas tank, with lots of surface area for "kustom paint" once it's all bolted together. Many paperclips and some plastic tubing later, I had a rough frame around it, have a look:

I couldn't resist turning the front canard into a big toothy jaw (the pinnacle of orkish aerodynamics!)

So now I'm working on power plant and weapons. Current plan is two chunky turbines mounted under the gas tank. I'm still debating with weapon location. Also, I'm entertaining the idea of some (small) stabilizing tail fins beside the sissy bar, or under the saddle. If I go that route, I can sling some rokkits underneath. Keep in mind, this is very much WIP. Rivets and orkification are definitely coming once I get this thing bulked out more. Let me know what you think!

Finally, one for scale:

Nice! It's funny to see an IRL gearhead applying his knowledge to da Orks. Great construction too. May I ask where the gas tank came from, originally?

Watch out though- next thing you know, you'll be adding bolt-on armor to your Isuzu or something...

With city traffic being what it is, don't think I haven't considered some bolt-on armor plating!

The gas tank is from an old Robogear model, it's basically the bottom of the SPRUT fuselage with the wings lopped off, and flipped upside down. The robogear models are a bit comical, but with a mek's eye can be good source of all kinds of nice orky bits. I was turned on to them by the great mind behind the orks at Irondog Studios, more specifically his Vommit Kommitz. I'd direct any ork player (or modeler, in general) to that site, there is a lot of great work there.

As for the Chopper: I'm working on engines as we speak, some nice turbine bits again hacked from a robogear kit. I've also gotten my hands on some diamond plate, be afraid. I'll try to get some progress done before sundown, so I can actually post decent pictures of progress!

'Ere we go!

I added the turbines, and various worky bits. I'm pretty happy with the balance, there's still a few things left to tackle though.

In no particular order:
-greenstuff a saddle
-add headlight, wires, rivets, and other flavor bits
-orkification
-convert a suitable rider (Gork's Angels? Da Eazy Ridahs?)
-base it

I'm also still debating weapon placement. What do you guys think? TL rokkits slung under the turbines? Somehow mounted on the front forks? Under some kind of stabilizer/tail fin?

Here's the progress thus far:

I like the concept so far. Not sure I agree with the exhaust you've gone with, but I'm hard pressed to think of anything more suitable. Are you going to be adding more to the back end? I'm sort of thinking that's what you meant by adding saddle. It just feels a bit off balance right now. And I know it's Orky so it doesn't really have to look like it'll work, but I can't help but try to make stuff 'seem' like it would x.x maybe that's why I don't agree with the exhaust. Some sort of clunky orky wings toward the back end and some smaller ones up front on the forks could do the trick.

Just one word:

Sponsons.

Think about it. No Mek could resist! Have them stick out of the fuel tank, for even more "what could go wrong?" - style.

Bit delayed as my old pc died on me, here's the latest progress.

Grey Death mentioned wings, it seems the old adage is true, great minds think alike:

Tossed those on the first bike, balanced her out a fair bit, AND gave me prime location to mount some rokkits!

I've also begun work on a second, feeling more of a raked out custom with this one, I see the second engine mounted at the end of long front forks on this puppy:

Finally, a shot of the first thus far (almost finished, still needs some lovin though) and the two of them side by side

The rear wing really bulked out the entire piece nicely. I also like the patch work on some of the parts. The added detail is helping to breath life into the model.

I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with the second one.

You might consider beefing up the wiring bits in the future. The wires on the old one seem to be the only weedy bits on the entire piece.

First things first, thanks for all the feedback! I'm really stoked to know that people like them so far. I want to see more people doing cycle style deff koptas!

I've been making progress on the second bike despite life devouring my free time lately, here's a quick update.

First off, one of the reasons I haven't updated in a bit......

So yeah, I've had my hands full perusing bits and working on some Stonkin new stormboys, some lootas, some cannon fodder boys, and some gnarly meks.

So the second bike! Going for more of a street bike look, really raked out. This one will be even less functionally sound, but hopefully will look just as slick once I'm finished with it. Rider will basically straddle the gas tank itself, I've already filed down an area to add a saddle. I also plan to go with Mr. Freeze's suggestion of making the rokkits "sponson"-esque from the gas tank itself, given the handy loota bits I've just scored.

More pics, granted they're garbage pics as I'm working with a thrown together, photoshopless pc but pics none the less:

And lastly, the money shot:

Not a problem at all, knowing that Neal has them now is good news, and still a salient addition to the thread! And I agree with you Petey about that Thunder model. Truth be told one of my original sketches was basically just an ork straddled over a giant turbine, but my first source was sold out... now that might just be an option!

Once I get my workload for the week ironed out I'll get back to the hobby table, I really want to finish a few of these and get some paint on them asap. Stay tuned.

edit:

MM: the turbines are from the same robogear kit as the gas tank bit, Robogear 'Sprut' model

GD: I see what you mean about the wires being a bit weedy by comparison, which I plan to remedy with a trip to guitar center this weekend. I must say, having outside perspectives and a few extra pairs of eyes really does help improve a project like this, thanks for the input thus far!

Snorkle: I've only done a little work on the first, but there are still some minor touches I plan to add whilst still progressing on others. As for the purchase, that shot is a healthy chunk of boys and lootas, and I picked up the new SAG model (had to, just out of pure joy that it was returned) and a second KFF mek. The lootas as they're almost mandatory in most lists (and still look chunky and shooty at the same time, I like em) but really the order was an all encompassing "Get more fun bits" order. I plan to chop some of the extra burna boy bits into more lootas... And if you look in the background you'll spy the looted wagon WIP that began as a recently stripped looted basi... so much to do!

Well, I used the word "sponsons" for the lack of a better one, but the idea was to have some sort of a launch mechanism just bolted onto the gas tank itself. I haven't seen the new lootas yet so I can't comment on the bitz, but I envisioned it to look like what a standard issue sidearm sponson would without all the armorplating.

Instead, the mechanisms would have three or six rokkits either stacked on top of the feed gauge so that gravity would pop in a new one in once the gun fired, or simply have three gun "barrels" to launch the rokkits from on either side. The "sponsons" would then have power cords that would connect to the engine, much like the turbines. And in order to keep the conversion from being too easy, have the sponsons turn left and right like on the big tanks!

Oh, and dont forget to model leaking oil from the bad bolting job on the sponsons!

Thinking back on that, it really seems like the bike will be too cramped together with those sponson-things, so in all seriousness I bet whatever you had in mind will probably do better.

But I do like the idea of putting heavy duty tank equipment on a flimsy jetbike... it would be very orky.

migsula, good to see you back on the boards!

I've put some late nights into the bikes, I'm starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. First up, the first bike.

Slapped on a gas cap on the tank, and finally mounted some rokkits. I added some detailing to the rokkits themselves to tie them into the newer look seen on the new Tankbusta sculpts, it worked pretty well. A saddle and a glyph (possibly on the side of the tank to help obscure that heinous join line) and then she's about ready for basing and paint.

Next up is the low slung chopper. I've opted for the shark fin looking tail rudder over a pair of horizontal stabilizers. This leaves little in the means of lift generation, but the greenskin in me figures if you just go fast enough, you don't need lift! I do still plan to mount the rokkits off the gas tank somehow, still experimenting with bits and ideas there. She's got a bit more to go yet, and I'm tooling about with a dual headlight setup for this one to give it more of a sportbike feel.

Finally the third bike, lovingly dubbed "Fat Boy" for obvious reasons, and because those thick front forks and chunky headlamp draw heavy influence from the Harley Davidson model. I've also started inserting more GW 40k bits, to give them a sense of proper scale and to help tie them into the more generic GW models in my force.

As you might have guessed those forks aren't fat for the sake of being fat, but rather to support a Buzzsaw! The thought of a turbo boosting scout bike with a power weapon just makes me all tingly. So that's where I stand. Some more work ahead, and lots more rivets and orkish dents and dings. And basing. And painting. But yeah, here's today's glamour shot:

Thanks! I'm glad folks are digging them.

Right now I'm content with these three. I plan to do some playtesting and get a feel for how they fit in with the rest of Da Blue Meanies. I plan to field them as a pair, so even if I lose one I can still take objectives. Having the option to take the saw on one gives me the ability to do some rear armor hunting, or just tie up long range firepower with some hit and run action. If it works well, I'll make 4 and pull two pair into the fray. For now though, I'm gearing up to make the pilots... and once again, the ideas begin to simmer...

Still chugging along on these. Progress slowed a bit as I did knock one item off my list of february vows, a Macragge box is now in the hands of my roommate, and he's already begun working on a Tau force... much to the dismay of my orks! But I digress...

In a perpetual battle to find a crisp, clean WIP photograph I've tweaked my white balance a bit, and experimented with a dark background.

"Da Rice Rokkit" is nearing completion. I added an asymmetrical dual headlight setup that was initially a measuring mistake, but looked so orky I had to keep it. I'm glad I did, as it helps to remind that these contraptions are still ork-hewn.

Some ork and beakie shoulderpads mated with card to produce some nifty Harrier jet style air intakes.

Finally, Sponsons! I couldn't resist taking a great suggestion very literally, and I'm pleased at how well they've turned out.

"Da Fatboy" is coming along nicely as well. I've slapped together a buzzsaw that I think is suitably killy, which even from a gaming distance still looks dead rippy.

I've also done some patchwork and minor detail work. I've still got to decide rokkit placement and figure out a chunky set of handlebars. Still a bit left to do on this one (and minor greenstuff on all three) before they see primer. Hopefully I'll be on bases soon. Money shot time!
