Played a 24-hour game versus my mate today doing exactly what the Apocalypse book told us to - we used ALL of our models! Not true entirely as he found oblits and I found bikers after we'd finished the lists, but we didn't trifle with that.
Important stuff:
My side: 12,000 Emperor's Children, 6,000 Corrupted Space Marines, Baneblade and Zarakynal included.
Assets: Flank March, Careful Planning, Camoflauge, Hold at all Costs, Daemonic Infestation*
Formations: 1 Linebreaker Squadron, Warp Rift
His side: 13,000 Black Legion, 5,000 Imperial Guard, An'ggroth included
Assets: Bunkers, Minefields, Obstacles, Careful Planning, Flank March
Formations: Warp Rift
The battle was a story battle, so three of his assets were pre-decided in order to give him a massive fortress to fight in/behind. The wall sections each had 4 structure points and were armor 14 [4 sections]. Guardsmen stood inside in two rows, and on top marines in 2 rows. All 3+ cover. The gate was armour 13, 3 structure points. Inside there were 3 basilicas, each Armor 14 and 5 structure points, 3+ cover, and once fully breached the cover for the entire base went to 4+, and another deduction for each 5 structure points downed. Any blast shot had a chance to penetrate as well, at any spot in the fortress.
Daemonic Infestation was our own thought-up asset that works as the same "penalty" facing the Grey Knights, with the exception that an "avatar" must be chosen. As long as the model lives, daemonic units may return to the board on my board edge or from the warp rift. Flank March allowed me to bring them on from his edge as well, however. Zarakynal was the avatar.
The gate counted as two objectives. Another lay deep in my deployment zone, another by the warp rift that I placed deep in his, and the other two were our armies' main commanders, mobile until they died, whence they became true objectives.
I can't do a turn-by turn report of a game this size per se, but in the end it was a very close tie, only by Zarakynal rolling a 1 for massacre result at the last turn and not being able to count her points on My daemon prince's body objective. The fortress walls were all destroyed, but none of the basilicas fell, one having only 1 structure point left by the end.
The game took 24 hours! Very difficult with only 1 player per side, and I'd definitely recommend getting some friends to help! But it was an absolute blast with action non-stop from beginning to end. I'm really enjoying Apocalypse!
Oh, and at the end of the battle Zarakynal was still standing, but An'ggroth was not. Glory to Slaanesh!
