Hey all!

I love warhammer, or well statergy games in genrall, but this game has always cathed my imagenation i just never been able to start (small problem in the cash flow area - i am only 16 !) but know i got a part time job while im at 6th fourm i can finally get into this wonderful world!

And that's the probelm the world of warhammer 40k and warhammer fantisy (later maybe ) is very big! and it one of the things i love about this game! But i need some help choing an army, i know what i would like, i really want an army that's easy to paint (one reason i may not of gotten into this earlier) and consentrates at shooting from a distence, as well as being resernobly mobile ( does not have to be fast just easy to get into posistion).

As i jsut said painting may be a problem for me - i have co-ordonaion issue to the point that the goverment has to provided me with a laptop to do all my school work, man does everyone eles hate me! (if you want to know more seach for dyspraxia on the net) And this is where i ask you can someone who has a bit of co-ordonation probelms any chance of painting a decent looking miniture? i'm not expecting to be entering compertitions but i at least want them not to look too appling.

waiting for your replys
Tharamanthar

p.s. i try very hard with my to spealing but in all trust i just carn't! so excuse any really obvious mistakes because i just dont realises things are spealled wrong.

Necrons may provide alot of solutions. they are the easiest to pain to a decent standard. I'd also say they are the best army on a budget, as they dont need many models to make up points. i'd say they are mobile as well. My only concern is that they don't seem to have much character, and are a bit plain. but thats a personal preference.

you can also look at the GW website, they have painting guides for a ll the popular models so look through them and see which ones suit your skill. (mine is terrible )

Hope this helps

Too tell you the truth i was already considering necrons or imperial guard, and like you i prefer models with a bit of chracter. I din't know / realise that the GW site had painting guides, that could be really helpful and i humbly thank you!

As i said likeyou i want something with a bit of chracter, any suggestion considering what i have already said

p.s.

this may seem obvious but why don't necrons have that much chratcer ( rember im like REALLY knew to warhammer, never had my own army thought i going to change that as soon as im set in my mind about what i want)

Well its only my perception of them, but when I was looking at the models there was so few available compared to other armies that it seems theres less chance of having an individual army. but i'm sure theres some people that will argue against that. There is also the fact they look like the terminator, a machine lacking so much personality that they had to get Arnie to play it

As for IG, be aware that they are expensive to create a decent sized army. but then again they are loads of models and have lots of character.

Another army to look out for is Tau, but i know next to nothing about them. altough the seems to have a simply paint scheme

Tau. tau, i think thier a "new race" in the fact thier young yet have highly capible technology? i might have a look at them as well! i still like the sounds of necrons thought i belive they could et soem chracter force injected into them? althought that might be difficult

Well the easiest way to add character to any army is to change the paint scheme. the necrons are usually silvery, but i've seen some great rust effects models. theres also a great swap themed army aswell.

http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/necrons/painting/basics/painting.htm

Another thing i like about the necrons is they look very cool, and disictive, and i think part of that is the lack of personalty, they're machines designed to kill.

If you're still unsure have a read about them on the web. have a look at the codex. and ask the staff at your local GW etc.

thx for the links, i think i might be able to do a resonable job with these. Next time i got to nottingham ( my local store) ill have a talk with them.

thx 4 the help as well, and i seen soem really god mods of some units, so count you do that to them as well? or are they somehow limited in this department?

well you can customise units as much as you like, its a matter of skill it can be from adding bits from others armies to creating your own bits. I've never gone down this route myself but theres a modelling section that will help you better.

i live near Nottingham, it has the store, in the city and the GW HQ. Derby has a store aswell. Theres a store in Ilkeston that also sells warhammer, its only a fraction of the models available but they have most of the key stuff-including necron units. this place isn't an propper GW store so they won't be able to give you any infomation.

Thanks, do you think if i ask them to give me some painting advice / tutorials they would help me? - my local store is the one in nottingham ( 20 - 25 mins by bus) so i'll be going their - at least for know. I should be able to get down their this weekend to talk to them and hopefully finalise and buy my first few minitures and the codex, a friend of mine ( a choas player) lent me a rule book for a while but i carn't really ask for his advice as he's currently working ( and when you think he's in the navy and is probally lost in the atlantic it might be a while before i see him again!) althought he is probly the final kick what this time told me i AM going to start, as i have said before i have admired warhammer for a long time - i played it agist this friend of mine at his 7th birthday! ( i know weird birthday activerty!) and have been encaptured ever since!

on a side note do you know if they sell fantisy, i been talking with another frined of mine who is a fantisy fanatic ( he and his farther have even placed in some of the gw compertistion) and even thought the bulk of my experence of warhammer is with 40k i cannot draw my eyes away from his AMAZING wood elf army, i could easily picture my self playing with some of them as well, but i hear fantisy is a lot harder than 40k in that is has more rules and more complex ones as well, any comments?

Well it depends on the person you end up talking to at the GW store. Some are downright surly lol. Most aren't, but alot of them sit around and paint all day. I'm sure they'll give you a hand.

Every GW store sells 40K and Fantasy.

Fantasy might seem more complex, but with the new edition it really is getting better. You seem young, so here's my best advice:

Pick one army, and buy models just for it. Play it alot. Get it to 2000 points (over time) and see how you like 40K. You can try Fantasy but for a new player I'd never recommend it.

One piece of advice that REALLY helped me out when I was starting to paint my minis was that one of the LOTR books had a painting section and they said a good rule of thumb was to look at your minis at arms length and if it looked good there then you were done. Remember that your starting paint jobs dont have to look like the rank 8-10 stuff on coolminiornot, that path leads to insanity (trust me I almost went nuts that way). Worry about detail later after you get a good grasp of the basics, it took me about 4-5 years of painting off and on to get to the point where I can successfully add eyes and teeth to my Space Wolves!! When you start out it feels good to have a fully painted army on the field as well, even though it may not be the best it still adds a degree of coolness seeing that since Ive gone against too many people who only have a handful of minis painted compaired to my full army!

Hope this helps ya out.

That's great advice. Whenever someone stoops over a mini
to look at it close up I start yelling, "Three foot rule! Three foot
rule!"

Anyway.

The other thing to remember is that you have to like the minis
and you have to want to paint the minis. GW is going to screw
with your rules one way or the other, and in the end you're
going to be left with the minis. So if you don't like painting the
minis you have you're not getting your money's worth.

To start out you'll need the new rule book and before you get any tau buy the codex to see if you like the ideas and fluff in the codex. Also from there you can start to figure out what you'll need and buy accordingly.

An even easier army to paint that has lots of flavor is space marines. Just use Iron Hands or think up a new chapter. Spray them black or white, paint the shoulder pads and put some metallics in between the joints and on the guns. Easy to paint and you have lots to choose from. You also have much more fluff to create a background. If you're interested in the fluff aspect part of the game.

If you're looking at buying a rule book be aware that the 5th edition is set to come out this year. if you want the 4th edition it may be worth taking a more, dodgyy route of acquiring it. you could do the same for the codex, for a temporary basis.

Or you could just borrow your friend's rulebook for the time being, as long as he's ok with that. The codex for tau should be good for quite a while longer but the Space Marine Codex will probably get an update soon along with 5th Edition.

If you are starting out painting think check out the "Magic Dip" method. Used on the right models it can make a basic paint job look tip top for wargames.

Check the modelling section here for info.

thank you all for the advise, i been talking with a few other people i know and belive im still not sure lol, but it tau or necrons for me i belive, i looked over the tau codex ( one of my mates play tau) and they have a lot of things im looking for, i just want to know if their any problems with the moddels ( slightly heavy handed and dont want to break them) because i belive my mate said some thing along the line of " flimsy rubbish and " insert chosen curse here, i don't know what he ment but it just nade me think the models are somehow flawed

Well all GW models will break if you apply to much force to them as long as they're plastic. But they are pretty sturdy so as long as you don't try to break them they'll be fine. The issue with tau is they are rather thin models so they are more fragile than space marines but most races are. Necrons have this problem too.
If I were you I would personally take necrons, because they are much easier too paint. Tau have easily painted armor but they have clothes with wrinkles on, which is much harder to paint. The only thing with necrons is that you'll have to be careful not to break them as they have little green rods that go into the guns as you have probably already seen.
