Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Last weekend I overslept for an RTT that was about 10 minutes away from my house in Jacksonville, but The Green Bloater was really hyping this RTT in Tampa at The Goblin Shoppe.

Now mind you that I missed a RTT that was 10 minutes away, and this RTT was on the other side of Florida over 3.5 hours and 200+ miles away. I woke up late at 6:30am and it was pouring rain and I wanted to go back to bed, but I have not played in a while, and it would also be good to see some more of Florida (since I might be moving to AZ in the summer), and to check out Tampa.

This Tournament was for 2250 points which is a really odd number, and a bit higher than I am use to. The rounds where 2.5 hours each, and I was worried about getting all 6 rounds in. When I worry about time being a factor, I generally try to take a small elite army.

Unfortunately because of the point total, I only have 2 armies that I can field that are painted. So I had to choose between Eldar and Chaos. I have been on a bit of a Chaos kick lately, but I didn’t like any of the lists that I made at those points, and since Stelek was badmouthing the Eldrad/Avatar combo, I was going to take it for a test drive again.

My list:

HQ
Eldrad
Avatar

Elites
4 Harlequins w/1 fusion pistol and Kisses
Shadowseer w/Kiss
Troupe Leader with Power Weapon

5 Striking Scorpions
Exarch w/Scorpion’s claw and Stalker

Troops
10 Guardians w/Brightlance
10 Guardians w/Brightlance
10 Guardians w/Brightlance

16 Storm Guardians
Warlock w/Singing Spear and Enhance

9 Dire Avengers
Exarch w/Power Weapon Shimmershield and Defend

9 Dire Avengers
Exarch w/2 Sh. Cats. and Bladestorm

Fast Attack
Vyper with 2 Sh. Cannons
Vyper with 2 Sh. Cannons

Heavy Support
Falcon w/Star Cannon, Sh. Cannon, Holofields and Spirit Stones
Falcon w/Star Cannon, Sh. Cannon, Holofields and Spirit Stones

4 Dark Reapers
Exarch w/Missile Launcher and Fast Shot

Comes in close to 90 models, and 6 banshees short of all of my painted models.

This is also what I was worried about was playing a horde army and not getting all of my turns in. One thing in my favor is that this is the army I am most familiar with, and can move it fast. Also it's range and durability might be an issue.

So that's where you were, eh? We were hoping you'd be out for the RTT in Orlando. Oh well.

So what did you think of the home brew missions and the odd build total (2250)?

I didn't realize they had one in Orlando on Saturday. It was only posted on Adeptus Orlandicus a couple of days ago, and I did not check the board the last couple of days.

The points where not as bad as I thought they would be. I ended all my games rather early.

As far as the missions go, they had Hostage Retrieval, Scouting Engagement, and then they had a strait up VP battle. If you add in This is Heavy Doc to them, those are the 3 worst missions in the pack because of their unbalancing nature.

Blackmoor I will be attending all three of those as well.

Anyways the Goblin Shoppe had 16 people out there. I heard Sci Fi gave an award to everyone that played as only like 4 people made it out. All GW missions basically suck and you will run into that just about anywhere.

There are bad missions in the RTT pack, and there are some that are good or ok ones. But the 3 I mentioned are the worst because they are unbalanced and favor a bunch of armies. This is Heavy Doc helps a shooting army, Hostage Retrieval is 350 free points to the defender, and Scouting mission kills footslogging armies, and is a mech armies paradise.

I have participated in many Goblinn Shoppe tournaments in the past, and the missions are why I never go back.

You are fortunate, back when I went, the missions where even crazier!

Current Armies: Blood Angels, Imperial Guard (40k), Skorne, Retribution (Warmachine), Vampire Counts (Fantasy)

I don't like any of the GW missions to be honest. Plus we have been using the same ones for much too long now.

That is why we at Sci-Fi generate our own most of the time. Though we haven't sense we converted to the GT system.

I concur. Those missions really bone certain armies. I absolutely hate the Hostage Retrieval since there are some armies that don't have the speed/durability or time to march into the teeth of the enemy...grab the hostage and get back into the deployment zone.

Agreed. I think the craziest one I played is where pieces of terrain disappeared from the table. I always liked playing there though, because the store was nice and so were the people. But crazy missions, distance has kept me away lately.

Once I was playing Heavy G Doc against this Space Marine player with my BA. He started with his termies on the table in one corner then at the top of the third turn picked them up and deep striked them onto the opposite corner. I was flabbergasted so much I did not say anything. Anyways it looked like he was going to win when I rolled high on the Heavy G Doc table plus black raged 6" for my large DC led by two Chaplains. They moved a total of over 28" assaulting both his termies and assault squad plus his master and chaplain. There was nothing left of his to even swing back. He quit and said I was not fun to play against.

Blackmoor, I think you should give warp spiders a try in your footslogging lists. I've made up a list with some inspiration from yours, but some of my own twist too. Warp spiders are one such twist, and in a game against a necron player that i normally have trouble with they performed commendably, and i phased him by the end of my 5th turn.

They add a bit of speed in a mostly slow list, and can support the falcons pretty well. They are also much more resilient than walking dire avengers (which i have used also...and they almost always get shot off the board by ap4 fire), albeit more expensive, but i still prefer the spiders.

Just something to think about.

Also, why do you use scorpions instead of a second squad of harlies? In 2250 i know you could dig up the points difference.

Edit: Question three....Why do you always start your falcon squads disembarked? It makes it that much harder to move the falcons with divination, no?

When you combine Speed and Power you get Lightning.

It has to do with what I have painted. My 'Arboyz list was very different because I could use unpainted models. It had Jetbike squads and 2 squads of Warp Spiders in it, and I won the Southern California regional tournament with them.

Also, why do you use scorpions instead of a second squad of harlies?

There are a couple of reasons why I do this. The first incarnations of my list I used Banshees. I liked the idea of them as the ultimate counter assault unit since they can fleet out of the falcon and go before harlequins and genestealers. But what I found out what that they just did not have enough killing power with there strength 3 and I was very disappointed with their performance. I then switched to Scorpions and I liked how they worked better. They have a lot of attacks so they are good against hordes and marines. And I liked how the Exarch with the Scorpions Claw gives them a lot of options. The last unit I added was the Harlequins because I had a lot of problems using them at first. My first problem is that I do not roll a lot of ‘6’s, so I had trouble killing things with them. That is the reason why I use the troupe leader with the power weapon so I do not have to rely on rending so much. Also they are a fragile finesse unit that took a while to learn to use. And another reasons why I don't use them is that I am worried about my comp/sports score.

Edit: Question three....Why do you always start your falcon squads disembarked? It makes it that much harder to move the falcons with divination, no?

Yes I almost always start outside of my Falcons. The reason for it is that I do not wish to be entangled for a turn if one gets shot down. There are indirect fire weapons, fast moving units that can shoot, or units that can flanked for a side shot, infiltrating units, or shots, angles or weapons that I missed somewhere, and I would prefer not to be entangled for a turn.

Before I set up I know where I want my Falcons to be. Since most of the time I am setting up my heavy support first, I know that they are going to be the ones that I will reposition. So I tend to set up my Dark Reapers and one Falcon (since I know that I can count on moving 2 units) where I think they will help control the deployment of my opponent. Then when I set up my troops, I make sure to leave a hole for them to place my Falcon where I want it to go, and then set up my Scorpions and my Harlequins to be near where I am going to be placing them.
