Ok so sorry if this gets nooby, I just started playing 40K again with the new ork codec.

1) I buy 10 flash gitz and upgrade them with a painboy then get more dakka. The more dakka says that it's the whole squad and 5 points per model so do I need to pay 45 or 50? Does the painboy need to get a useless upgrade?

2) If I pay for the to "be led by" the captain, he is an extra 11th model correct?

3) The ammo runts wargear entry seems to indicate that they are assigned to specific models, yet the flash gitz seem to buy them for the whole squad. Can anyone in the squad use the ammo runts bought by the squad? Under any circumstance can the captain use the extra bought for the squad for a total of 6 rerolls for the game?

Thanks in advance for the help.

For the painboy question, i'd say yes. He is a member of the squad so unfortunately you have to spend more points on his no-existant snazzgun

1) Yep, 5 points per model regardless of whether they use the upgrade or not.

2) Yes, the Captain is an extra model.

3) Its not really clear by the RAW, since the runt description refers to "a model" as having an ammo runt as opposed to a unit. That said, I think it is safe to assume that since the entire unit is taking the Ammo runts any model (including the Captain) may use the re-roll if you wish.

thanks yak, one last one. I vaguely recall that a special character cannot have more stuff added to them, but can't find that rule anymore.

Does the Captain have to take more dakka and cybork bodies if the rest of the unit does? i. e. the captain bumps these costs to 55?

The Kaptain is himself a squad upgrade, so I would say he does not purchase the Dakka because he himself is not "a member of the squad" for upgrade purpsoes.

Of course he is a member of the squad, and he benifits from FNP from the painboy, and he gives his leadership to the squad.

But are you allowed to choose the order you buy the upgrades for the squad? If you buy "more dakka" for 50 points and then you buy the captain, do you have to go back and retroactivly buy the dakka for the captain?

I think by the RAW you have to pay 5 points for every model in the unit in order to take the upgrade. There is no 'timing' in making unit upgrades. Rather it is more of a 'if/then' sequence.

If you have selected the unit and have given them the upgrade but you haven't paid +5 points per model, I don't see how you aren't breaking the rule.

That said, I personally wouldn't begrudge anyone who didn't pay the 5 points for both the Captain and the Doc, as neither of them actually use the upgrade.

He is an addition to the squad. A psuedo-independent character that when in play counts as a member of the squad. Special characters being used in this way is a new thing and will cause more problems in other areas I'm sure.

If he's 'added' to the squad, then he's a part of the squad.

Are ammo runts part of the squad then? If not, my guess would be that being able to be removed as a casualty would be a good rule of thumb. If so, being an additional model bought as an upgrade to the squad might negate having to pay the upgrade. So, since the Doc is just an original member of the squad, he pays, but the Kaptain who is bought in addition to the squad (going over their allowed model count) doesn't pay.

Now, I don't have the codex at all, so just thinking here.

ammo runts, and any other kind of grot/squig attachment are a purely decorative feature. no stats, not killable
