I am trying to create a Space Marine colour scheme for a chapter which relies heavily on stealth and surprise attacks (everything infiltrates) and rather than going for something boring like black I wondered if a scheme like this would work:

The problem is there isn't a lot of flat space on a SM model, so the camouflage may not look like a coherent design but may simply look like I splashed some paint on :(

Do you think a scheme like that could work?

Viperion

Edit: No sad face smily? Weird.

I'm sure there will be a 15 disc super duper blu-wiener-ray edition that will have every little thing included. - Necros, on Watchmen

You can always try it on one model and see how it works. Not a huge deal if it comes out bad.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

You'll see some marines painted up in camo. I used striped patches on top of Catachan Green. The small repeating pattern retained coherency of a camoflage scheme. You can use different colors, but the same idea. Mine are part of a stealth arm of the Dark Angles, or simply on a special assignment that requires a bit more time then Marines are used to behind enemy lines.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

In general, Space Marines don't look so good in camo. They're supposed to look knightly / heraldic. Plus, their armor saves make camo largely irrelevant. Save the camo for the Scouts, Eldar Rangers, Tau, and Guardsmen.

You can do very well with off-black colors like navy blue or dark grey.

Since you were looking at a grey/green scheme, how about this:
- dark grey basecost
- olive green shoulderpads
- olive green helmets for sergeants
- olive green cloth for scouts, tabards, robes
- dark metallic accents
- olive green bolter
- red / white insignia

Bah! Don't be so arrogant/single minded. The world of 40k is so vast and varried you can justify just about any sort of color scheme. In the real world battle tanks and massive transport trucks are painted in camoflage and there isn't a chance in hell that you're not going to see one, and if you're blind you'll hear them. So armor has little to do with it. It has to do when the vehicle, in this case the Marine, is sitting idle, perhaps in ambush, or when your enemy is in a frenzy of fear and you want to make it harder for them to properly aim at you (believe me, that works).

That is excellent advice, indeed. You might reflect upon it, yourself...

As for my opinion, if I don't think that PA SM look good in camo, I'm entitled to that thought, and I'm entitled to share it. Whether the OP agrees is up to him.

No biggie.

Tho if it amuses you, I have to admit that I can't paint bright-colored SM to save my life.

Nope, don't really care.

The idea more or less was not that they need camouflage to survive, but to get into position (infiltrate) in the first place

Skinnatitar's camouflage marines look pretty good. But duplicating an army worth of marines in that paint scheme would be pretty hard and time consûming.
