Hey man.
Ive just started my Ork army too, so instead of giving you my limited knowledge I shall point you in the direction of:

This really helped my with understanding the effectiveness of the new rules.

I think that the burnas and tank bustas cant keep up with the rest of the army? Maybe take three mobs of loota's instead? And one question, how can two identical ork boy mobs cost the same if one has a more expensive truck?

The Burnas can ride in the battlewagon, or team up with the weirdboy and hope for a conveniently timed teleport, or, they can just arrive in the second 'cleanup' wave. Whatever can't keep up (such as the looted wagon, tankbustas, deff dredd, etc) is designed to provide fire support and then clean up whatever is left (or hitch a ride in the battlewagon).

I listed the points cost for the trukks seperately to the mobs.

Yes, this was an interesting read, but it seemed a bit reactionary for my taste. It provided some good and valid analyses, but seemed a bit too tainted by comparisons to how orks used to be, and driven by a sense of entitlement, which does not help a player making an army with the current codex at all. It makes some very broad and dismissive statements like "because bikers are not fearless anymore there is almost no point to taking them" which makes it hard to take it seriously.

But nonetheless, it has some good ideas.

Thanks!

I can't answer for him, but I know I wont take lootas because I think they were an after thought to balance the list.
"Hmm, how can we make orks shootier now? OH, make loots ridiculous!"
I just don't feel any character, so I don't use them.

feedback on the army list:

big mek = love him to death, dont bother with the 'eavy armor though

warphead = awesome that you're not using warboss on bike, but if you can scrounge up the points take zoggwort he is just way better.

meks in burna squad = good anti tank
but only use mega blastas for that str 8 ap 2 goodness
put the warphead in with them, and up the squad to max size to insure you can take fearless and ld 10 for warphead checks even after a few casualties
if you're daring you could go for an 'ere we go and deep strike right next to some tank or squad and flame them to death or pop the tank with KMB's

meks in with lootas = BAD.. why downgrade your deffgun to a big shoota? lower str and range?!
also run 15.. you need to be able to absorb some casualties and stay fearless or watch them fall off the board.

drop the tankbustas... they honestly are TERRIBLE in most games. especially against a smart opponent.
if you insist on keeping them put them in your transport battlewagon. i'll get to changing the battlewagon in a sec. remember that if you can see another vehicle from your battlewagon the tankbustas have to shoot it. making the big shootas worthless. (can't target something else)

as far as your trukk boyz.. I love how you have them set up but a tiny bit of feedback:
trukks are best set up with: red paintjob, ram, stikkbomb chucka, rokkit
squad is best as 12 boyz, 1 w/ rokkit, nob w/ klaw and bosspole
4 trukks = 8 rokkits. I cannot tell you how many games I've won because of focused anti tank firepower coming from such an unlikely place.

not to mention that you can move 13" then fire 2 rokkits (the one on the trukk and the one in the squad) extending the range to a mighty 37". its almost as good as a missle launcher. 2 shots gives you a good chance of hitting. remember you need every opportunity to deal with monoliths and such

DROP the DEFF DREAD!!! yuk.

I'd drop zaggstruk. having played a few dozen games since the new codex I can tell you your stormboyz will cross the field by turn 2. you don't need the deepstrike.

put the points from the dread and downgrading to a basic nob into putting together a 4th trukk squad

drop the zapp guns. they are terrible . the rokkits on trukks, in squads, lootas, and SAG will be sufficient anti tank

warbikes are underrated I think. but increase the squad to 10 so you can absorb some casualties

deffkoptas are the pwn. but take them with twin linked rokkits for additional anti tank power. up the squad to 5 if you have the pts

change the looted wagon to a battle wagon.. totally worth the extra points for that av14 front armor
ard case, extra armor, killcannon is enough

for your transport battlewagon I'd take just:
(mind you this is if you are putting the tank bustas in there)
1 rokkit or big shoota (to avoid immobilized if you get a wpn destroyed)
red paint, reinforced ram (or deffrolla if you have pts), armor plates, grott riggers.

I hope the feedback is helpful.. its coming from someone who has only played KOS orks for 5+ years now

Fair point. Some games I'll be playing tankbustas and bikes because I think there Orky fun. Most I'll play a competitive list as I want to win for a change. Haven't won much or played much in ages as I've been playing with bad lists made of models I can afford. Not effective.
Would any of you guys mind giving feedback on my list? I'll link it and if you have any comments please throw them my way.

I like the loota rules, but I'm not crazy about the models. There are also much better tankhunting options available to us. I put my faith in Deffkopters and the mighty PK of a biker warboss for small games. Any games big enough to justify more get a pack of Tankbusters in a battlewagon. Squigbombs with greater than a 31" range should take care of anything that needs krumping.

I like the character of your list, despite it having a few point sinks and a lack of redundancy. I think what models you choose to buy will depend on how you want your army to play. Do you want a lean, mean, green, tournament viable list or one that has a bit of everything? As we are teetering on the edge of a new edition, it doesn't make sense to me to invest too heavily in specialist types if your goal is to have a top-tier list. Things might change, tankbustas will be better if they can be screened and Lootas will be worse. On the other hand, if your goal is to have a characterful army that is fun to play, and has a certain Klan theme then I'd go with the list you've got. I know I enjoy playing with armies that aren't necessarily top tier, but have an interesting composition and where tactics vary a lot from game to game.

In either case, I'd recommend getting a decent amount of standard boyz. They will be your backbone no matter what happens and if the rules for 5th ed are anything like the PDF you'll want plenty of boyz with choppas. By the time you get sixty or so painted up, 5th ed should come out and you can build from there. That's my two cents.

Thanks heaps NaZ, there are some great ideas there, especially the rokkit-trukk idea. Genius. Let's see... what else.

- burnas: Yes! Putting the Wierdboy with them and going 'ere we go and opening up with flamers. That was my plan exactly. I've done it once already, and it got the squad wiped out, but it was lots of fun and they took out more than their point value in a single shooting phase. You're also probably right about the mega-blasters. I chose the big shoota because I was thinking in terms of "how many weapons will I have without having to buy or trade any extra bits", but I'm sure i could model something.

- Lootas: Bigger is better, yes, and maybe I should buy a third pack of them to have the bigger mob. The meks were there pretty much only to increase the numbers without having to buy more packs. But yes, I see they are a points waste.

- Tankbustas: I know they have problems... I just love the models. I also love the fact that for every unit of boyz I buy, I get an extra rokkit launcha to make another tankbusta... This would also be why I have no rokkits in my boyz mobs. Me being economical.

- Trukk boyz: Good idea.

-Deff Dread: ..I'll wait a while before I make my mind up on this guy. The one game I have used him in, he charged and downed a chaos khorne champion that my opponent never stops bragging about how awesome he is... In other words, the Dread is still in my good books

- Zzap Guns: Again, you're probably right, but I am already too invested in the notion of making some Red Alert style Tesla Coils. It just suits the style of my army too much to drop. I even named my boss (big Mek Zazzwott) after the sound a tesla coil makes frying an 'umie.

- Deffkoptas: Testify!

- Zaggstruk: hmm... here you have given me the most to think about. You are right, they will get around on their own... I kinda like the whole strategic redeployment aspect he can offer... but we will see. Will play-test this one till I know what I want. I have already traded for some Necron bits to make his legs.

- Looted Wagon: I know they're kinda crap, but they're cheap, they attract fire, and they throw out ordinance templates. And besides, I had the leman russ just lying around gathering dust. Plus I love the idea of using human vehicles in an ork army.

- Battlewagon: Ahh, my pride and joy. This baby is actually being sculpted out of a Land-raider Crusader. I only half put the kit together to make it open topped, I'm adding a whole fighting platform on top, the GRabbing Klaw is being made out of the legs of a Sentinel... It's gonna be great. I'm even thinking of putting one of those Forgeworld Grot-piloted missiles onto it.

...and Samwise158, thank you for your help too. On an aside, Noooooooooo! I haven't played 40k for ages and when I got the rulebook the GW people assured me that we /weren't/ on the brink of a new system.

But yes, my army is very much a fun army. This game is occasionally too stressful for me to want to play too competitively. I actually gave up 40k last edition because of a too good for his socks, overly competitive, potential tournament winner, unable to win gracefully tyranids player who sucked all the fun out of the game for me (oh what's that? You run at me and charge me in the first or second turn dpending on if I actually move, and I only get one chance to shoot you before you wipe me out completely? ..and oh look... The table has mysteriously become over-cluttered with too much high scenery, and every bit of cover is exactly a genestealer's movement away, so I DON'T actually get aforementioned one chance to shoot you ). Yes, it's a friendly army for fun games, and I do like to have a bit of everything.

...and thank you for your comment of the character of my list. I'm delighted that came through. Orks are such a characterful race, and the new codex is extremely characterful. I jumped at the chance to play an army showcasing a slightly odd ork army, with lots of hardcore technology who will get an enjoyable shooting phase, with a fast moving horde infantry base. I've tried to go for what I imagine the Blood Axes to be all about... Except Kommandos. I don't really like Kommandos for some reason.

Thanks to everyone else who commented too! Have an apocalypse game this weekend where me and another ork player are teaming up to make 3000, vs a tenuous alliance between Chaos and Necrons (I know I know - suspend reality for this one). Will employ some of what you have talked about - and encourage my Speed Freak fellow warboss to consider doing the same.

Thanks again!

I understand the POV about playing fun units, I hope they work out for you .

making a zaggstrukk nob is a good conversion either way, you don't have to take his rules and could still say legs count as power klaw

so knock yourself out.

as far as the russ goes.. I've been using mine as a battlewagon with 3x big shootas, killcannon, ard case. nobody has given me any grief about it.

I hope the rest of the advice is helpful.

Oh, although the truth is in the Victory Points, I'm sure they will be very helpful.

True, good point about the Zagstruk nob.

...now you've got me thinking about if I know any lizardmen players to steal some serpent heads off to make some green stuff snakes to make Ol' Zogwort.

Hadn't really read about him until now. He rocks!
