About the Skaven, I played them and I had some luck with slings. After a couple of heros leveled up I gave them the skill (can't think of the name off hand) to use other missle weapons and gave him a bow.
I agree about the theme of a shambling horde of zombies (I am a Vampire Counts player in
WHFB), I would say they cannot hide, but that would be more of a house rule. You and your friend should lay some down reguarding that. If worse comes to worse, roll off!

Yes, your model has to be aware of the enemy to charge it. Remember that if you charge around a corner, you have to make an initiative test to do it.

Yes. When your model is equal to or less than your initiative to a hidden enemy, it is detected and no longer hidden.
