Well this weekend was the Murfreesboro battle for Stones River 1863 tournament. The tournament was set up for 50 people and you needed to pay in advance to reserve your spot. Matt, Rob, Jason and I were to go but in the end it was just Matt and I.

First, there were a lot of people at the event that was great. Unfortunately there was no coordination to notify the people on the waiting list that there were spots open to come so I am out $30. I called a week in advance to cancel the two guys but still no refund. Oh, well, that’s the gaming world for you.

Terrain:
Wow, we drove 7 hours to play in a fantasy tournament. Really, this is the reason that I have three rhinos in my list. There was about 3 pieces of terrain per table and a river.

Missions:
If you like the ones in the rule book that is fine. I didn’t mind but I heard a lot of people complain that everything was VP based only. It was published ahead of time that this way it would be, so I didn’t complain but I have to admit I really like that idea of have new inventive stuff (hat's off to the Atlanta crew).

Players: Everyone was great and friendly. We made some new friends and will hopefully see some of them in Charlotte in the future.

On to the missions!

Patrol: Witch hunters vs. Deamonhunters

Wow, for the first time since I have been playing my list (two years) I got another Inquisitorial match up. The player had a beautiful painted army. The mission had us both start with 2 troop choices and then reserves. He won the first turn and it was actually about to work against him. His dread and teleport grey knights came in on turn 2 and wiped out one squad of my marines. However in my turn two the dread, PE and 2 speeder squadrons came in and it was curtains for the grey knights from the PE and the lascannon from the other marines immobilized his dread with the assault cannon. The next turn saw the rest of his mobilized army come in but without the terrain to move around they were quickly either destroyed or immobilized. This left his troop out in the open the speeders and the dreads made quick work of them. My opponent was great and was the first to point out to me that we were playing a great 40k tournament on fantasy boards.

Crushing victory
Points 18 out of possible 22 (there was 1 bonus point awarded per patrol squad alive at the end of the game)

Recon: Witchhunters vs. Deamonhunters (grey knights only)

If I wasn’t surprised by the first battle then the second one floored me. Now I would be facing an entire grey knight list with two land raiders. He deployed the land raiders with the two squads of grey knights in them and everything else was going to deep strike. My army is really mobile due to the speeders so that was not going to work for him if I could keep the land raiders out of my front lines. He had no place to hide or get cover for glancing hits, My marines and dreads took out both raiders in turn one and two and it was over from there. My poor opponent lost his entire army by turn 3. We had a blast and laughed a lot. We talked about the variations in his list that he could do and welcomed the constructive criticism, which was a welcome change. I will state again that the folks in the Tenn. 40k community are great sportsmen. Some of the best I have every met.

Victorious Slaughter
Points 21 out of 21 (you got 1 point for having none of your opponents units in your deployment zone)

Witchhunters vs. Necrons Take and Hold.

So if you have to take and hold to win an objective it would be a great idea to play Necrons with a deceiver and monolith in your list. If you want to make sure that your list is used the best way possible you get Brian White to play it. Brian had a great plan for the mission and my gamble didn’t pay off. The deceiver ruined my day. It was looking like a draw going into turn 3 when the destroys died and the monolith got immobilized but I had waiting to long to get the deceiver and he got into my lines, it was all over at that point.

Lose 5 points (I have also had the pleasure of losing to his Tyranids as well at the TFT tournament in Atlanta)

Final turn

Witchhunters vs. Blood Angels

This was looking very bad from me. He had a three Baal list with Lemartes. He won first turn and took out both rhino blockers, the elite inquisitor and retinue as well as the death cults and a speeder squadron. I rallied the troops and in my turn one took out all three Baals and both of hia speeders. Now things were looking up! He jumped with assaults troops and his librarian to get into my back lines and I thought this was it. He rolled for difficult terrain and rolled two -2’s that put them 1 inch out of range and next turn they were vaporized by my melta and plasma.

Victorious Slaughter
Points 23 out of 23 (you got 1 bonus if you killed there general, three if you killed them with your general)

Now the scoring for the painting was a little fuzzy but there were some awesomely painted armies and I think the bug army that won was one of the top 3 and they had three judges out there, so it wasn’t anywhere near the issues that we had here with the Charlotte circuit.

Overall it was a great trip and an awesome event. The free lunch with the entry fee was a nice touch and everything ran on time and smooth for a 4 round event. I hope for next year they get more terrain, is the real complaint that I heard and have for them. After running dozens of RTT and hosting the GT in Charlotte I am very aware how hard that really is if you have 25 tables to kit out with terrain, so hats off to them for the attempt.

Brian won the event and Walter a former KOS fencer won best general (so Warfan took the show, great job guys). It actually came down to the last round and Brian won vs. bugs which I find an amazing bit of irony.

What army list are you using? You say witch hunters but then talk about dreads and marines and stuff? Are you using some frankenstein allies list or something?

witch hunters list
inq lord with plasma pistol, evis, hood
3 acolytes cap armor and bolt pistol w/cc
3 vets with meltaguns
rhino
DH inq with scourging
3vets with plasma
2 DC assassins
eversor
1-5 man storm w/ rhino and 2 flamers
1-5 man storm w/ rhino and 2 plasma
2-5 man las/plas space marine allies
1-9 person zealots plus priest plus fanatic with evis
3-2 speeder sqadrons with ass. cannon hvy bolter
2- dreads 1-tll 1-ass. cannon
1 pentinent engine

I use the allie space marine option with my army. No sisters in the list. Lots of different chapters to make up the crusade. The Grey Knight player and I joked that the reason that he died so quickly is that he forgot to answer my inq request for aid. He guaranteed me that would never happen again.

Your shooting against high AV targets with this list seems quite lucky.... downing in the same turn 3 AV 13 baal predators with just 3 lasscannons shoots is impressive... the same state to killing 2 AV 14 GK Land Raiders... that is a statistical anomaly, you know... but well... that’s the reason for wh40k being funnier than mathhammer....

the land raiders died to the AC rending. I couldn't roll a 6 all day to kill a troop but could roll 6's all day long after I hit. It made for a very weird day.

It's not actually a WH list by most WH players standards.

It's vanilla marines with inquisitors.

Mostly a min-maxed asscannon list.

This list? Assault cannon spam? Even for Stelek, that's rich.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

There's 6 land speeders with asscannons.

What do you consider spam? 20?

When the list has very little else in the way of shooting beyond 12", I dunno seems like a asscan list to me.

thanks for the comments. Brian didn't have a problem with the AC. He just parked the necrons in the river and they became 3/5 saving dudes that would not DIE!. Yes, there are a lot of AC and lascannons in the list. If I wanted to I could get rid of the PE and the zealots and add more but then I would have a SM army with an inquisitor lord, maybe I'll try it thanks.
