One Canoptek Scarab in a Swarm

Mission Viejo, CA

Last week my friend and I played a 2,000 pnt Cleanse mission. We tried to incorporate some of the Cities of Death rules for placing terrain without going overboard and having to implement strategems as well and we also bid on deployment time. Person with the lowest bid got to place an extra obstacle after deployment. We incorporated a chess clock for the movement phase of our turns to try and limit our game time, but it still ran about 3.5 hours or so.

My list
1 Deceiver
1 Necron Lord w/RO and VoD, staff of light
8 Immortals
5 Pariahs
11 Warriors
11 Warrrios
8 Scarabs
3 Destroyers
3 Destroyers
2 Tomb Spyders
2 H. Destroyers
1 H. Destroyers
pnts=2001
phase out-10
I haven't even tried to use my Pariahs lately due to their amazing pnt sucking abilities, so I wanted to see how they'd do as a retinue to the Deceiver, making his Dread even more powerful against the high ldshp Eldar.

His list (approximate)
1 Eldrad
1 Wraithlord
1 Wraithlord
5 Wraithguard w/warlock in Wave Serpent
5 Wraithguard w/warlock in Wave Serpent
20 Storm guardians w/warlock
20 Storm guardians w/warlock
10 Pathfinders
7 Banshees
1 Banshee Phoenix Lord

see image for table set up.

Buildings 1 and 3 are Area Terrain, Bldng 2 is just a wall.

Deployment: He won the deployment roll and chose to deploy in Quadrant 1. I was in 4 and placed first.
Necrons-I placed one tomb spyder as close to the center as I could to keep him 18" back and then crammed my warriors, pariahs, immortals, lord, and Deceiver into that building (bldng is 2 levels). H. Destroyers huddled in Bldng. 3 and the scarabs and Destroyers hung out towards the far right edge as far up as they could go. Use Grand Illusion to put scarabs behind the short wall in position to tie up his pathfinders.

Eldar-Almost everything piles in on the left edge of Bldng. 1 with Guardians A taking up residency inside Bldng. 1. The Wave Serpents hang out in the back behind Area Terrain 2 waiting for my non-existent monolith to deep strike before rushing the wraithguard in for the kill. The Pathfinders infiltrate into Bldg. 1, setting us up for a ridiculous shootout in turn 1.

Turn 1
Necrons-he wins the turn roll and opts to go second. Warriors A and Tomb Spyder A stay put, Warriors B and TS B head north, staying inside the building. Destroyers head North as well with H. Destroyers moving northwest to get an angle on one of the Wraithlords behind the building. Pariahs and Deceiver push towards the center, still inside Bldng. 2. DUMBEST MOVE OF THE GAME!!!!!!!!! Instead of saving my VoD Lord and Immortals for the end-game move I was planning, I decide to deep strike behind his lines and try to take out his wave serpents before they start moving. Bad idea. Immortals fail to wound the skimmer, H. Destroyers take 1 wound off of Wraithlord A behind bldng 1 and Pariahs, warriors, and destroyers take 2 off of Wraithlord B in Bldng 1.

Eldar-He turns, he shoots, he slaughters. Guardians B, 10 Wraithguard, and 2 waveserpents descend on my Lord and Immortals. It takes all of their firepower, plus an assault from the Guardians AND wraithguard with Eldrad Dooming and Guiding like nobody's business to wipe them out. Sucks, but a testament to the resilience of Immortals. Pathfinders move up in Bldng 1 to get within 6" of the edge. All other eldar take heart in my Lord's demise. Deceiver chuckles in amusement.

Turn 2
Necrons- Deceiver and Pariahs rush for the center, with Pariahs hiding behind Deceiver for cover. Scarabs head for Pathfinders, Warriors B move into position behind Bldng. 2 in Quadrant 2. H. Destroyers angle for shot on Wave Serpent, to no avail. Warriors A and B shoot at Guardians A, take out a handful (stupid cover!). Destroyers able to move and get shots off at Banshees sticking out on North side of Bldng 1, take down 3, but they pass Morale check. Deceiver uses Dread on Pathfinders and, coupled with the Pariah's ability, sends them running, leaving him with no one to assault *sadness*.

Eldar- Wraithguard load back up, move towards center, Banshees huddle in shadow of Wraithlords as they move back towards center. Guardians B, already in the backfield, start moving to go behind Area Terrain 1 in Quadrant 3. Pathfinders pass ldshp and regroup, having only fallen back 3". They manage to drop one of my Pariahs, guardians drop 2 warriors from Group B. Wraithlords take pot shots at my scarabs, and Wraithlord B charges, crushing bugs left and right.

Turn 3
Necrons- Warriors from B get their WBB, stay put and fire at Guardians, Destroyers pull back to crest of hill to avoid sniper fire, H. destroyers hang around just N. of Bldng. 3 with nothing to shoot at. Destroyers manage to take down WaveSerpent on the North side of Bldng. 1 forcing Wraithguard A to disembark. Pariahs take shots at Pathfinders, fail to wound. Deceiver slides into combat, slaps Wraithlord B around, massacre consolidation 6" into Pathfinders still in Bldng. 1. Scarabs try to fall back behind far right corner of Area Terrain 1.

Eldar- Banshees burst forth and charge towards my Pariah. Wraithlord A moves forward to kill some bugs (he knows he has a date with a Deceiver). Wave Serpent B moves to lower right edge of Bldng. 1 and unloads Wraithguard B, who fail to wound any of Warriors A still in Bldng. 2. Wave Serpent B then shoots at H. Destroyers, dropping the 2 man squad. Guardians A charge out of ruins towards Warriors B, only drop 3 warriors; 2 in shooting, 1 in the charge, lose 5 more guardians but don't fall back. Bugs crushed under the feet of Wraithlord A, Pariahs left with 1 man standing, doesn't break (hurray Fearless!). Deceiver disengages from combat and heads toward Wraithlord A.

Turn 4
Necrons- H. Destroyers make their WBB rolls, join the 1 man squad. Warriors and TS A move out of building to get in rapid fire range of Wraithguard, drops one. TS B joins the fray with the Guardians, and Destroyers start firing at Wraithguard A (who are being supported by Eldrad) as they head for quadrant 2. H. Destroyers fire at Wave Serpent B, no luck. Deceiver says hi to Wraithlord A....and then kills him, consolidates into Wraithguard B.

Eldar- Seeing his Wraithlords die so easily at the hands of my C'tan is unnerving, so he decides to start pushing for phase out. Pathfinders, Banshees, and Wave Serpent pour shots into Warriors A, and then Banshees and Phoenix Lord proceed to destroy the entire unit. Guardians A and Warriors and TS B trade blows once more, Guardians reduced to 4 w/Warlock, still don't break.

Turn 5
Necrons- TS A earns his keep; 9 out of 11 Warriors from group A pass their WBB and join Warriors B in the ruins. TS A pulls back from the advancing Banshees to contest Quadrant 4. The now 20 strong unit of Warriors crushes the remaining Guardians. H. Destroyers finally drop the Wave Serpent while Destroyers do next to nothing against the slowly advancing (and slightly Fortuned) Wraithguard B. Deceiver hits and kills all remaining Wraithguard A and consolidates into Pathfinders.

Eldar-Banshees move towards Quadrant 4, only fleet 1". Wraithguard B and Eldrad continue towards the line, and unleash several Wraithcannon shots at Warriors, only dropping 2, no saves. Pathfinders sit and stare while Deceiver rips through 3 of their compatriots.

Turn 6
Necrons- Warriors and TS B move forward to take shots at Wraithguard B, H. Destroyers head North to shoot at Wraithguard while Destroyers move South to line up on the Banshees. TS A keeps on scooting backwards. Destroyers drop only 1 more Banshee, H. Destroyers only drop 1 Wraithguard, Warriors do absolutely nothing against Wraithguard. Deceiver, oblivious to everything else, joyfully tears through 3 more Pathfinders, still don't fall back.

Eldar- Eldrad and the Wraithguard decide to stay in Quadrant 1, Banshees move into quadrant 4, and Guardians B take a nap in Quadrant 3. Eldrad unleashes Eldrad's Storm, just for kicks, no kills. Deceiver treats 3 more Pathfinders like playthings and the game is done.

Don't remember the victory point totals, but he ended up only 100 pnts or so beneath me. This is where we both realized our mistakes in that you don't get any points for claiming the quadrant you deployed in. Noting that, I should have abandoned the Pathfinders and gone after Eldrad to try and get some more points with the Deceiver or gone after the do-nothing Guardians with my Lord and Immortals instead of sacrificing them to the Eldar in Turn 1. He should have moved his wraithguard forward 6 more inches to contest Quadrant 2. As it was, we both got 500 pnts for our quadrants and tied. It was a brutal game marked by stupidity on both sides, but we had a great time.

"Spare me your space-age techno-babble, Attilla the Hun!"
