Could someone please explain to me what Renegade Space Marines are? I always assumed they were just Space Marines who do not serve the Emperor or any of the Chaos gods. Pretty much just mercenaries. Is this correct or do I have it all wrong?

That's pretty much on target. Some serve with Rogue Traders and other things. I believe there is an entire chapter that used to be loyal, but suffered severe casualties and never received reinforcements or something and they became a mercenary chapter.

yes you are correct, but as far as they imperium is concerned they are traitorous and heretics. of course the imperium is a bunch of paranoid, superstitious freaks who condemn anything they don't understand as heresy or spirits.
