When counting up models hit and destroyed in a artillery unit, how do you do it?

Do only gunners count for morale checks?

Do guns destroyed count for morale checks vs shooting? (They do count against you in CC, but the mechanic isn't really defined well for shooting.)

Essentially, if you have 13 gunners and 3 guns; what is the check point for morale?

Is it 16(4), 12(4), 8(2), etc or is it 13(4), 9(3), 6(2), etc?

What if only one gun is range, and takes say 3 glancing/penetrating hits...does that count as 3 casualties or just 1 (it essentially has only 1 hit it can suffer)?

It's been bugging me.

The only person in my group that has them counts the unit size as the grots that are firing, so the artillery that are destroyed don't count towards morale checks and don't count for unit size either. This works fairly well so we have never really discussed it since it is very rare for it to matter.

I have no idea what RAW is or if there are other mixed artillery and infantry units other than orks (or if they still have them).

Well Orks do still have them. I run some.

Just been trying to get a feel for a happy medium on how to run the unit.

The artillery rules say the unit follows the normal morale rules for infantry units.

The basic morale rules say that (for shooting casualties) you take a morale check when:

"A unit los[es] 25% or more of its current unit strength in models."

Gun models are definitely "models" and if they are destroyed I'd say you count as losing them.

So in your example it would be 16(4) and it doesn't matter how many glancing hits a single gun suffers as morale checks are solely determined by how many models you lost in that shooting phase.

hey yak, what page is that on. Someone tried to argue with me that it was starting strength. I could not find it in the book. I always thought it was how you said. CURRENT strength.

"Do NOT ask me if you can fire the squad you forgot to shoot once we are in the assault phase, EVER!!!"

Right in the morale section, page 47.

I can not find any reason why the guns would not count as part of the squad, so I would say that thaty should be counted for both squad size and casualty purposes.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.
