So I recently started a IG army, and I have been working away getting them painted enough for my likeing. Though I cant seem to shade them right. I am using plastic cadian models, and my only real problem are the fatigues. I am using the cadian 8th color sheme but cant seem to get the pants to look shaded. I even bought some chestnut ink thinking my problems would be over. But sadly the color is very orange, and does not work well. Anyone have anything I can try? I want a dark brown in the folds for shading. Though I cant seem to achieve this.

Firstly, Get some pics up so we know exactly what you're talking about.

Here's my method, it gives tabletop standard results.
Step one, base coat of a dark brown. I use scorched brown, drybrush a mix with bestial brown, then bestial brown, the drybrush a mix of bestial brown and snakebite leather. Then brown ink, then a final light drybrush of the bestial brown snakebite leather mix.

Of course there are different browns and different effects because of them. Some more reddy, some more orangey etc. I agree about chestnut ink being a bit orange.
You can have very simple effective basecoat, drybrush, ink, drybrush schemes that look nice. Just practive your drybrush technique so thats its effective and not too heavy.

What technique do you use to shade? Different brush techniques will yield different results, and depending on what you are doing you can get odd results. Dry-brushing, Over-brushing, Straight highlighting, all can lead to different results.

If you don't thin the ink and mix with some sort of detergent the ink can sit oddly on the model, you ought to use a wash of some sort. You can make your own, or buy the pre-made ones that GW is putting out.

I am doing overwash I think. I am following the instructions in the IG codex for painting cadians. A desert brown coat over a black undercoat. Then a 50/50 mix desert yellow bleached bone. The only problem is I found out real fast i don't have the skill to paint only the raised parts that I don't want to be shaded. I was thinking of maybe trying to pir my guard but a wash might work. How do I make my own wash? Should I just search the forum for a thread on how to do that?

I'd search for tips on drybrushing, and working on spare sprues to practice. Its a pretty essential technique, achieving good results quickly. I'm sure if you use tips on this forum and spend an hour or two trying it out, you'll start to get the hang of it. There isn't much skill to be scared of, just don't have too much paint, and don't press too hard. G'luck.

GW has an article on washes,

but there are some excellent tutorials on this forum, so if you want some other perspectives, go for it

Alright cool thanks I will read through all the stuff, and work on it. And DaMaGe I am a pretty good dry brusher I just don't know what I could drybrush over the already like color to add shading. Washes might be my best choice at the moment. But I think maybe I will work on drybrushing on my next batch of infantry. Thanks for your tips. I will try, and get some pictures up to show ya how I do.
