So I just gave in and bought an Army Transport from my FLGS, but I wasn't sure what foam inserts to get. I figured I would consult Dakka and see if the decision would be made a little easier for me.

The important information:
I play necrons. I will be carrying a lot of troop size models (warriors, Immortals), as well as Destroyers. I will also be carrying 2 Monoliths (perhaps 3)

I was thinking a bunch of the 1inch inserts with one 4 inch one for the vehicles, but I'm not sure that 1inch ones would hold the models if theyre laying on their backs (and im concerned about fitting the Destroyers, too)

I feel really stupid for posting this here, but the math for thicknesses of models completely escapes me (My army is currently sitting in the boxes still shrink wrapped)

Thanks all. I <3 Dakka.

**Edit: I blame being overworked for the poor grammar. Forgive me**

Are your destroyers permanently attached to their bases?

And you're pretty much SOL on the monoliths, unless you want to stack foam end to end. How tall is the monolith?

I would definitely recommend using 2 layers of the 2 inch foam for the monolith and take out the inserts so is makes a sandwich. It's easier to get something out of the two sides thena 4 inch thick layer.

Isn't the monolith closer to 6" square as opposed to 4"?

I don't mind carrying the Monoliths using another method. From what I gather they're pretty solid if built correctly.

Also, the destroyers will be able to be taken off their bases.

I get the same problem with my necrons, I find most foot slogers can be easily transported in the regular case foam inserts without damage, destrovers can be a pain but I find puttin them into a cardboard box with the Monoliths and anything else that doesn't fit usually works, but thats just my preference

Okay, so after reading this and doing some math (which I'm sure took much longer than it should have) I've come up with the following configuration:

6x 1.00" trays (for sloggers)
2x 2.5" trays (for destroyers/wraiths)

That, including the .25" inserts, equals 13", leaving me with an inch to play with (that's what she said)

So, providing my math is right, and that I'm going to transport my monoliths in a different way (perhaps used GW case ftw), would this be the optimal configuration, or is there a way I can get more bang for my buck (perhaps thinner trays for the Destroyers would work)?

You can use the 4 inch trays to sort of stabilize the monoliths.

Check these out too, they also hold the sabol trays and give a little more depth without being a pain to carry around.

And how much was the GW version with the words CADIA sprayed on it?

I have my necrons in a standard Army Transport with the 2 x 2.5" trays and the rest 1".

I have 1 2.5" tray on the bottom, anchoring the Monolith, with several 1" trays stacked on top with successively smaller holes cut out of them. With the guns all folded in a position parallel to the long edge of the case, it fits very well.

Once you stop cutting for the monolith, there is still room on top for the last 1" tray and the second 2.5". I use the latter to hold destroyer-types, all with the bases permanently attached. And there's some extra room for these large models in the bottom tray next to the Monolith.

It may sound like this is not very efficient, but I hold close to 2500 points of Necrons in the case, with room to spare.

2 Monoliths, of course, would not work.

Malf: It was $90 but it came with the Apoc Rulebook, templates, and big gun dice.

Also, CADIA wasn't sprayed on, it was affixed with velcro.

So 40 bucks?

It doesn't seem so bad then.

Though I'd probably want a plain bag. Walking around with a grunt's

I have mostly 1" trays for my troops but I've recently decided the 1.5" ones would probably be better since some of them are in funky poses and such and some bits stick can stick out above the top edge. So I would start with a couple of them for troops, and I'm guessing the 3" trays should be fine for the destroyers.

One thing though, when you do get them don't just start ripping out squares left and right. You can squeeze a lot of models in 1 tray if you really plan it out. for example here's how I did my general troop tray for my guard:
