Check out this 1850pt Farsight list, but don't say anything about 5th ed. and troops, because obviously this would be horrible!

Farsight
7x Plas/MP suits with locks, targetters, trackers and 14SD

Shas'El and 2 bodyguards with plas/burst [maybe MP], trackers,targeters, 6 SD

Monat: TL fusion, flamer [deepstrike and horde control]
Monat: TL fusion, flamer
2xsuits: 2xTL MP, one targetter, one flamer

2x6 Firewarriors

2xBASS, one target lock, 2SD

total: 1850.

comments and crit. most welcome! I think this list could face a lot of problems, but it would certainly be a powerhouse of plasma, and its super easy to paint up nicely

cheers

you need more fire warriors. all tau lists need a bunch of fire warriors since the suits can't put out enough weight on their own to stem the tide of almost any opposing force.

I appreciate your input, but could you be a bit more specific? Just adding Firewarriors really doesn't seem like it would really help this list much, if at all. This is how I see it:

1) 11 plasma guns, 3 burst cannons, 9 missile pods and 2 flamers is going to put more holes in more things than firewarriors could hope to achieve, especially considering it is all at BS4, not 3. This is really going to put the hurt on, especially at 18"-24" range JSJing.

2)Swapping out a squad or two of suits for basic firewarriors doesn't seem like the best exchange when the army's advantage lies in massed, mobile suits, not static gunlines. As it is I would probably hide the firewarriors all game, or swap out their rifles for carbines to allow for the movement and nicer range. Reducing the number of suits reduces the advantage of just having so many!
*actually, would swapping out the rifles for carbines be a good idea?*

3) To me Firewarriors really need to have a Devilfish to stand a chance, and even then are pretty mediocre, considering their low BS and expensive transport. Adding in one devilfish would be foolish, while two would cost too many points. Not to mention half of this army's theme and advantage lies in its close to 100% suits and no tanks composition. All those lascannons go to waste on shield drones!

4) Considering the firepower and points cost of the HQ suit units, if they don't stem the tide of an opposing force nothing else in the army is going to anyway! I know this many suits is powerful, from the games I have played and the people I have talked to playing this list, but firewarriors never really play a big role in any of its successes if you ask me. Any more constructive feedback/criticism is more than welcome!

One thought - if I plan to deepstrike the two HQ squads and two Monats for maximum killiness, would it perhaps be a good idea to drop a suit or two/ BASS or two for 4 pathfinders with a Devilfish. The pathfinders would probably be fairly useless as the only targets on the table but the devilfish would be really useful for its re-roll deepstrike scatter die ability. Probably not worth it though..

thanks for the input!

1) t really isn't. you really have nothing to deal with hordes, you shoot the flamer with more than 1-2 models under the template and your probably gonna get charged, then die.

2) you should have at least 1, probably 2 units of pathfinders because the markerlights are the best thing your army can use. carbnes are not a good idea unless you use the fish of fury tactic, and then have half with and half without, then you try to line your guys up with the front rank exactly 12" from the enemy and the back rank have carbines, then everyone gets a shot when they load off of the transport.

3)they do in some ways, but then they are just nice to hold back the enemy, your battlesuits alone cannot cripple any opponents army. what are you going to do against guard? die that's what. one battlecannon hits a battlesuit unit and they all die in marvelous fashion. then you won't have the ability to hit the guard at range enough that your uniendangered. basically you have too few models and they will die quicker than anything else you could take for tau.

my end point is i have never seen a tau army without 3-4 units of fire warriors do any better than tie. fire warriors have the hitting power and range enough to make them the best unit in the tau book. battlesuits are just there to have a good way to deal with heavy stuff like termies, mega armor nobs, and the like
